Where to place a ducted unit when the house is already built

The question that blocks most ducted system projects in renovations is not capacity or efficiency. It is space. The GREE Airy R32 9,000 BTU is the smallest format in the range, and it is often the only one that fits where the customer wants to install it.

The indoor unit measures 32.67 x 29.69 x 11.81 inches. Those 11.81 inches of height are the constraint that matters, and clearance must also be added for connecting the ducts and accessing the filter. We measure this height on site, never from plans: a ceiling void advertised as 14 inches regularly hides a beam, drain, or electrical conduit that brings the actual clearance down to 10.

Locations that work

Corridor drop ceiling

The best location in most homes. The corridor tolerates a localized ceiling drop, it is central to the rooms being served, and filter access remains easy through a discreet access hatch.

Closet or storage space

A cabinet built into the top of a closet works well when the corridor is too narrow. Acoustic insulation must be provided for the first duct section, along with an access door for maintenance.

Basement ceiling void

A common solution for conditioning the main floor from below. Condensate drainage is simpler there, and height is rarely an issue.

What works poorly

An unheated attic. Heat loss through the ducts offsets part of the efficiency, and the risk of condensate freezing is real in Quebec. We recommend against this configuration even when it appears to be the simplest option.

The unit carries ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation. Over seven months of heating season, the HSPF2 of 9.5 determines actual savings more than any single point value.

The duct network in an existing house

The maximum airflow is 412 ft³/min, enough to supply one or two rooms. In a renovation, the layout must work around the structure: we follow the joists rather than passing through them, use rigid oval ductwork where height is limited, and place the return in the main room.

The unit has high static pressure, which matters more in renovations than in new construction: a constrained layout requires elbows and lengths that a low-pressure ducted unit could not handle.

Condensate, the detail that leads to service calls

A ducted unit installed in a ceiling produces water in cooling mode. There must be a continuous slope toward a drain, or a condensate pump with a safety switch that shuts the unit off before it overflows. We install this switch systematically. It is an inexpensive component that prevents having to replace a drywall ceiling.

Quiet operation

Indoor unit at 24 to 38 dB(A). Above a bedroom, the low point of 24 dB(A) is what makes the installation acceptable, provided the first duct section is treated. Outdoor unit 34.38 x 14.80 x 21.84 inches at 55 dB(A), with a 1/4 - 3/8 inch connection — the smallest piping in the range, and therefore the most discreet wall penetrations.

220 V power supply, 11 A MCA, 15 A MOP, values recorded on the outdoor unit. A 15 A circuit can almost always be added without touching the electrical panel.

Financial assistance

This model does not appear on the current list of appliances eligible for LogisVert — no 9,000 BTU ducted unit appears on it. We check eligibility using Hydro-Québec's official tool for every project, but we recommend building your budget without counting on it. The 12,000 BTU model in the same range is eligible for $1,236, if the load allows it.

Airy and Extrême

Airy is the name under which Dettson distributes this platform in Quebec; GREE Canada sells it under the name Extrême. Same outdoor unit, same certificate, same performance. The choice comes down to availability and the service network.
