Ducted or Wall-Mounted: How We Decide
At the same capacity, a wall-mounted heat pump costs less to install and often shows better performance on paper. The ducted system wins on three specific points, and at least one of them needs to matter to you.
Distribution
A wall-mounted unit conditions the room where it is installed. A ducted system serves two or three rooms through a network of ducts, solving the classic imbalance between a comfortable living room and a closed-off bedroom that remains cold.
Appearance
No unit on the wall, no visible stream of air, just a grille in the ceiling. In a condominium, a formal living room, or a heritage home, this is often the main reason for choosing it.
Quiet in the Room
The fan is in the ceiling, not on the bedroom wall. Even with the same sound level on the specification sheet, the experience in the room is not comparable.
If none of these three points applies to your situation, we will tell you honestly that a wall-mounted unit will do the job for less.
Sizing Remains the Real Issue
Regardless of certification, 12,000 BTU is generally suitable for a well-insulated 400- to 550-square-foot area, or for two or three rooms served by the same network. Large south-facing windows, a cathedral ceiling, or a poorly insulated basement can push the load toward the next capacity level.
The airflow of 353 CFM requires a generous duct network: few sharp bends, properly sized main sections, an accessible filter, and sufficient return air. This is the key design constraint to keep in mind for this capacity.
Dehumidification

Maintenance in Two Steps
A ducted system requires little, but it requires regular attention.
The filter should be cleaned every four to eight weeks during the operating season. This is the only routine maintenance, and it is also the leading cause of airflow loss we see in service calls. We plan an access hatch for every installation and show you how to do it during commissioning.
The drain pan and condensate drain should be checked once a year, before the cooling season. We systematically install a safety switch that shuts the unit off before any overflow: it is an inexpensive component that prevents having to replace a drywall ceiling.
Everything else - refrigerant pressure, electrical connections, and outdoor-coil cleaning - falls under the annual maintenance we perform.
