Manufacturer's Warranty (Compressor - Coil - Parts):

A packaged heat pump that adapts to your controls and your ducts

Replacing the rooftop unit of a commercial space, an office or a multiplex already served by a duct system always raises the same practical questions: how the new equipment will be controlled, how it connects to the ducts in place, and what protection the manufacturer offers. This Kinghome Rooftop R32 packaged heat pump, from a brand that presents itself as a member of the Gree group ("a member of GREE group"), answers those three questions with a programmable controller supplied, several control modes, a fan adjustable to your ducts and side or bottom air supply.

This packaged heat pump is all electric: the compressor, the coils and the fan sit in a single outdoor cabinet, usually installed on the roof, which connects to the building's duct system to deliver heating and cooling. With a nominal capacity of 3 tons (36,000 BTU) and a certified cooling capacity of 34,000 BTU/h, the KH03TCNHA model suits buildings that want a single unit, with no gas line and no separate indoor unit. Its 208-230 V single-phase supply lets it serve buildings that have no three-phase service.

At AirGreen, an HVAC contractor holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, we install this model in Montreal, in Laval, in Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore. The sections below explain what matters when fitting it into an existing building: the controls, air balancing, the duct connection, then the warranty Kinghome offers.

Three ways to control the unit

Compatibility with the controls already in place often decides how far a replacement has to go. Kinghome provides three options, which lets the installation be adapted to the building rather than the other way around. The choice is made during the site visit, based on the equipment already present in the building and on the way the occupants set the temperature day to day.

The programmable wired controller supplied

Every unit ships with the XE7C-23/H programmable wired controller. You have nothing more to buy to set the setpoints and schedule the heating and cooling periods. For a store with fixed opening hours or an office closed on weekends, scheduling brings the unit's operation in line with the hours the space is really occupied. We install the controller where the temperature is representative of the space it serves, away from entrance doors, sunlit storefront windows and heat sources.

A 24 VAC thermostat

If your tenants or your employees are used to a wall thermostat, the unit also accepts 24 VAC thermostat control. It is a handy option when replacing an old rooftop unit already wired to a thermostat of this type. Before keeping the wall unit in place, we check the condition of the existing wiring, the number of wires available and the thermostat's compatibility with the heating and cooling functions of the new heat pump.

Modbus control for building management

In a building whose equipment is tied into a building management system, the Modbus control offered as an accessory by Kinghome lets the heat pump be integrated into that network. Modbus is a communication protocol widely used in building management. We work out the details with your integrator or your building manager to confirm, before installation, that the accessory meets their needs.

Six static pressure settings for ducts that are already there

A duct system never offers the same resistance from one building to the next: length of the runs, number of elbows, type of filter, size of the grilles and diffusers. A fan poorly matched to that resistance gives either too little airflow at the far registers or noise and drafts at the close ones.

The fan motor on this heat pump is variable-speed and offers six static pressure settings. At start-up, we pick the setting that matches the real duct system rather than a theoretical value, then we check air distribution in the different zones of the space. That is especially useful in a retrofit, when the ducts were designed for an older unit and redoing them is out of the question.

In operation, the unit automatically adjusts its capacity to the setpoint and to indoor and outdoor conditions. It has an Inverter rotary compressor and an electronic expansion valve: rather than running only on or off, it modulates its output, which helps keep the temperature steady in the space.

Side or bottom connection, without redoing the ducts

The duct layout often dictates the choice of a replacement unit. On this heat pump, supply and return air can be connected on the side or through the bottom; you simply reposition the side panel to go from one configuration to the other. Here are three situations we run into regularly.

  • Replacement on a flat roof: in a commercial space in Montreal or Longueuil, the ducts often drop straight down through the roof. A bottom connection lets those openings be reused, once the roof curb dimensions published by Kinghome have been compared with those of the curb in place.
  • Unit on an outdoor stand: for a multiplex in Laval or a South Shore building whose ducts come in through a wall, a side connection avoids adding elbows or new openings. The stand meets the minimum height of 18 in. required by Kinghome.
  • Offices tied into a management system: in a North Shore building, we keep the existing ducts and link the new heat pump to the management network through the Modbus accessory.

In every case the goal is the same: keep the existing duct system when it is in good condition, limit the openings in the roof or in the walls and reduce the scale of the work in occupied spaces.

Certified data, Kinghome warranty and installation by AirGreen

Performance verified by ENERGY STAR and AHRI

The values below come from this model's ENERGY STAR and AHRI certificates. The unit is ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certified, a designation that takes its cold-weather heating performance into account.

  • Nominal capacity: 3 tons (36,000 BTU)
  • Certified cooling at 35 °C: 34,000 BTU/h
  • Certified heating at 8.3 °C: 34,000 BTU/h
  • Certified nominal heating at -8.3 °C (17 °F): 21,800 BTU/h
  • Heating at -15 °C (5 °F), at maximum compressor speed: 29,000 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.90
  • SEER2 18.0, EER2 11.2 and HSPF2 8.5 (region IV)
  • AHRI number 218625041 and ENERGY STAR number 4657813

One point about the cold-weather figures: the capacity at -8.3 °C is the certified nominal capacity, while the one at -15 °C is measured at maximum compressor speed, under the ENERGY STAR Cold Climate criterion. That is why the value at -15 °C is higher than the one at -8.3 °C: the two measurements are not taken at the same compressor speed. The unit heats down to -30 °C (range of -30 °C to 24 °C outdoor) and cools from -5 °C to 52 °C.

What Kinghome builds into the unit

  • Inverter rotary compressor, electronic expansion valve and compressor crankcase heater
  • Intelligent defrost
  • R-32 refrigerant, with a charge of 149.9 oz
  • Salt spray tested equipment
  • Emergency shut-off switch included

The figures to plan for before installation

Fitting the unit in is not only a matter of controls. Here is the information we check during the site visit:

  • Electrical: 208-230 V / 1 phase / 60 Hz supply, MCA of 35 A and MOP of 40 A. We confirm the capacity available at the panel and the wiring route.
  • Dimensions: 44 × 35-7/16 × 49-1/4 in. (1,120 × 900 × 1,250 mm), in width, depth and height.
  • Weight: 523 lb net and 545 lb gross, to be measured against the load-bearing capacity of the roof or the stand.
  • Clearance: Kinghome requires the unit to be installed at least 18 in. (45 cm) above any surface, for snow and for defrost water drainage.

The Kinghome warranty and registration

Kinghome publishes a standard warranty of 5 years on parts and the compressor. When the unit is registered with Kinghome, the published warranty goes to 5 years on parts and 7 years on the compressor, under the manufacturer's conditions. Registration therefore makes a real difference to compressor coverage. At the end of the installation, we hand you the information on the unit and walk you through that step so it is not forgotten.

How we work in Montreal and the surrounding area

From Laval to Longueuil, from the North Shore to the South Shore, every project starts with a visit to the building. We look at the existing unit, the condition and layout of the ducts, the electrical panel, roof access and the controls already in place. We then give you a quote that spells out the connection method chosen, the type of control selected and the electrical work to plan for.

On installation day, our team takes care of removing the old unit, setting the new one in place, connecting it to the ducts and to the controls, then start-up: choosing the static pressure setting, programming the controller and checking operation in heating and in cooling. We take the time to show you the controller and its schedules before we leave. To compare this model with the other capacities and brands we install, see our packaged heat pumps page.
