Choosing a 2 ton packaged heat pump among the Gree group brands

When the owner of a small building asks us which one to choose, we always start with the same explanation: at equal capacity, these units share identical certified data. The choice therefore comes down to something else, the equipment and the control. This page covers the 2 ton TOSOT TK-H02TC/NhA-D(U) model, that is 24,000 BTU/h nominal, and what its spec sheet puts forward.
A packaged heat pump brings the compressor, the coils and the fan together in a single outdoor cabinet. That cabinet connects to the building's duct system and delivers both heating and air conditioning, with no indoor unit to house in a mechanical room. The TOSOT model runs on R-32 refrigerant and is fed in 208-230 V single-phase (1 phase, 60 Hz), which suits buildings that have no three-phase service. It is all-electric: no gas is required.
The buildings a 2 ton is right for
The 2 ton size targets small buildings served by a single duct system: a neighbourhood commercial space, a professional office, a workshop, a small branch or a house where all the air travels through the same distribution. In Montreal, Laval and Longueuil, these units often find their place on the flat roofs of small commercial buildings, where owners prefer to keep the equipment outside and free up the space indoors.
Final sizing still depends on your building: insulation, windows, occupancy and the condition of the ducts. That is why we do the estimate on site, before talking about a brand or a model. If the needs exceed what a 2 ton can deliver, the same TOSOT line also comes in 3, 4 and 5 ton.
Gree, Kinghome or TOSOT: what the certificates say
The three brands come from the same group: Kinghome presents itself as "a member of GREE group" and TOSOT is a Gree brand. We do not claim that the units are identical, but their certified data is, at equal capacity. In 2 ton, the TOSOT model posts the following values:
- AHRI reference 218795633 and ENERGY STAR certificate 4706810, with the ENERGY STAR Cold Climate designation;
- SEER2 of 18.0, EER2 of 11.7 and HSPF2 of 8.8 (region IV), against an EER2 of 11.2 for the 3, 4 and 5 ton models;
- 24,000 BTU/h in cooling at 35 °C and 24,000 BTU/h in heating at 8.3 °C;
- 15,500 BTU/h in heating at -8.3 °C (17 °F), the certified rated capacity;
- 29,000 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), measured at maximum compressor speed, with a COP of 1.90.
The value at -15 °C is higher than the one at -8.3 °C, which can be surprising on a first read. The explanation lies in how they are measured: the capacity at -8.3 °C is the certified rated value, while the one at -15 °C is measured at maximum compressor speed, under the ENERGY STAR Cold Climate criterion. The two figures therefore do not describe the same operation and cannot be compared directly. The COP of 1.90 means that, under those conditions, the unit delivers 1.90 units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws.
What sets the TOSOT sheet apart
Since the certified figures are the same from one brand to the next at equal capacity, it is the items described in TOSOT's "Submittal data" sheet that guide the choice. Three points hold our attention when we advise a customer torn between the group brands.
The TOSOT RS485 thermostat or a 24 V thermostat
The unit accepts two control modes: the TOSOT RS485 thermostat, or a standard 24 V thermostat from another manufacturer. The standard controller listed on the sheet is the XE7C-23/H. For a small business that already has a 24 V thermostat in good condition, we check whether it can be kept. For a building starting from scratch, the brand's own thermostat keeps everything with a single manufacturer, which simplifies dealings with technical support.
The Inverter rotary compressor with vapour injection (EVI)
TOSOT presents this model as a "DC Inverter Rooftop Ultra Heat Fully Electric Heat Pump", in other words a 100% electric heat pump. The unit is built around an Inverter rotary compressor with vapour injection (EVI), managed by high-efficiency DC Inverter technology. Vapour injection is a compression technique associated with cold-weather heating, while the Inverter compressor varies its speed with demand. The sheet also publishes a range of 8,600 to 25,400 BTU/h in cooling and 9,000 to 30,400 BTU/h in heating at 8.3 °C, which shows how wide that modulation is.
The 5 or 10 kW backup heat kits
Electric backup heat kits of 5 kW or 10 kW are offered as an option on the 2 ton. They add a reserve of heat for deep cold, on top of the heat pump. The 15 and 20 kW kits, for their part, are reserved for the 4 and 5 ton models. The choice between 5 and 10 kW is made with you, based on the building's needs and the capacity available at the electrical panel.
The TOSOT sheet also describes an electronic expansion valve, a centrifugal indoor blower and an aluminum air filter. We mention them because they are part of the documented equipment, not to set them against the other brands of the group: to compare two quotes, rely on the AHRI and ENERGY STAR references of each unit.

A compact cabinet for a small roof
The 2 ton measures 44 × 35-7/16 × 49-1/4 in. (1,120 × 900 × 1,250 mm), in width, depth and height. It weighs 523 lb net and 545 lb gross, and holds 150 oz of R-32 refrigerant. On a flat roof, we check the load-bearing capacity of the structure and the access for handling before confirming the location with you.
Vertical or horizontal duct connection
The ducts connect vertically, through the bottom of the unit, or horizontally, through the side. The vertical connection is made on a roof curb whose dimensions TOSOT publishes; the side connection suits cases where the ducts come in through a wall. The installation clearances published in the spec sheet are respected on every job, both for access during maintenance and for air circulation around the cabinet.
Airflow, static pressure and sound level
The centrifugal indoor blower offers three airflows: 880, 700 and 600 CFM (high, medium and low speed). External static pressure is 0.5 in. as standard and can reach 0.7 in. at maximum, a useful figure when reusing an existing duct system whose resistance is unknown. The published sound pressure is 65 dB(A): we take it into account to place the unit away from neighbouring windows and terraces when the roof allows.
Electrical supply and operating range
On the electrical side, the sheet lists an MCA of 35.0 A and an MOCP of 40.0 A, at 208-230 V single-phase. Your electrician sizes the circuit from those values; the backup heat kit, if you choose one, also has to be planned for at the panel. The unit heats at outdoor temperatures from -30 °C to 24 °C and cools from -5 °C to 52 °C. This heating down to -30 °C comes on top of the ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification, obtained for every capacity in the line.
