Packaged Heat Pump System Tosot Rooftop R32 5 Ton | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore and North Shore
Heating and cooling a large commercial volume with 1,600 CFM
A showroom, an open-plan retail store, a workshop, a training room or a community hall have one thing in common: a large volume of air to heat in winter and to cool in summer, often with high ceilings and an occupancy that varies from hour to hour. For these spaces, the TOSOT TK-H05TC/NhA-D(U) model is the 5 ton size in the lineup, that is 60,000 BTU/h nominal. It is a fully electric Rooftop R32 packaged heat pump: compressor, coils and fan are brought together in a single outdoor cabinet, connected to the building's duct system, for heating as well as for cooling.
TOSOT, a brand of the Gree group, presents this unit as a “DC Inverter Rooftop Ultra Heat Fully Electric Heat Pump”. No gas is required: the unit runs on R-32 refrigerant and is powered in 208-230 V single-phase, which suits commercial buildings that do not have three-phase service.
Airflow, the first criterion in a large space
In a large volume, capacity is of no use if the air does not reach the back of the room. The centrifugal indoor blower of the 5 ton moves 1,600 CFM at high speed, 1,200 CFM at medium speed and 1,100 CFM at low speed. External static pressure is 0.5 in. as standard and can reach 0.8 in. at most, which leaves a margin for longer duct systems, typical of large commercial spaces.
These three airflows make it possible to match the distribution to the layout of the duct system. Before the installation, we examine the placement of the diffusers and of the return grilles: in an open-plan room, a poorly placed return can leave warmer or cooler zones, even with a properly sized unit. The air passes through an aluminum air filter before being distributed.
Capacities matched to the volume
The 5 ton is certified under AHRI reference 218471412 and ENERGY STAR certificate 4624790. Its nominal capacity is 60,000 BTU/h; the certified values are 56,000 BTU/h in cooling at 35 °C and 57,000 BTU/h in heating at 8.3 °C. Thanks to high-efficiency DC Inverter technology, capacity varies with demand, within the ranges published by TOSOT:
- cooling: from 14,000 to 58,800 BTU/h;
- heating at 8.3 °C: from 14,250 to 62,700 BTU/h.
That range matters in a space whose occupancy changes over the course of the day. A store that is nearly empty at opening and busy in the afternoon does not have the same needs from one hour to the next: the compressor modulates its speed instead of running in full cycles. Seasonal efficiency is read in the certificates: SEER2 of 18.0, EER2 of 11.2 and HSPF2 of 8.3 (region IV).
Keeping a large space heated in cold weather
A large volume loses a lot of heat in deep cold, especially near the entrance doors and the display windows. The 5 ton is ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certified and operates in heating at outdoor temperatures from -30 °C to 24 °C. The certified data provides two benchmarks:
- 34,000 BTU/h at -8.3 °C (17 °F), the certified rated capacity;
- 51,000 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), measured at maximum compressor speed, with a COP of 2.00.
The figure at -15 °C is higher than the one at -8.3 °C because it does not measure the same operation: the first corresponds to the compressor pushed to its maximum speed, per the ENERGY STAR Cold Climate criterion, the second to the certified rated capacity. A COP of 2.00 means that at -15 °C, the unit delivers 2.00 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. The Inverter rotary compressor with vapour injection (EVI) and the electronic expansion valve are part of the equipment TOSOT describes for this “Ultra Heat” model, with heating down to -30 °C.
For buildings that want an additional reserve, TOSOT offers optional electric backup heat kits of 5, 10, 15 or 20 kW on the 5 ton. The choice is made after the heat loss calculation and the review of the electrical panel, since each kit adds its own load to the circuit.
Roof installation: curb, clearances and the AirGreen team
A unit of this size calls for careful preparation of the roof. At AirGreen, the installation is carried out by our own team, which takes charge of planning the curb, respecting the clearances, the handling and the start-up.
The roof curb and the connection to the ducts
TOSOT publishes the roof curb dimensions for the 5 ton. With a vertical connection, the supply and the return air pass through the bottom of the cabinet, through that curb; with a horizontal connection, the ducts connect on the side. In an existing building, we compare the published dimensions with the opening and the curb in place, if there is one, in order to determine the roofing work required before the unit is delivered.
Clearances to respect around the cabinet
The technical sheet publishes the installation clearances to allow for around the unit. We respect them on every installation: they ensure access for maintenance and the free circulation of air around the cabinet. On a commercial roof that already holds other equipment, this point often guides the choice of location. We also take into account the published sound pressure of 68 dB(A), keeping the unit away from windows and neighbours when the roof allows, as well as snow accumulation on the roof.
Weight, dimensions and handling
The cabinet measures 44 × 44 × 49-1/4 in. (1,120 × 1,120 × 1,250 mm), in width, depth and height. It weighs 629 lb net and 650 lb gross, and holds 205 oz of R-32 refrigerant. Before installation, we check that the roof structure can take that load at the planned location and we plan the handling up to the roof according to the access to the building.
Power supply and control
The technical sheet lists an MCA of 39.1 A and an MOCP of 45.0 A, in 208-230 V single-phase (1 phase, 60 Hz). We pass these values on to your electrician for the preparation of the circuit, adding the load of the backup kit if you choose one. For control, the unit accepts a standard 24 V thermostat from another manufacturer or the TOSOT RS485 thermostat; the standard controller listed in the sheet is the XE7C-23/H. In a store, we place the thermostat where it reads a temperature representative of the room, away from the doors and the display windows.
How a project unfolds with our team
For a commercial project of this size, here is how we proceed:
- a visit to the space, measurements and inspection of the duct system and of the diffusers;
- calculation of the heating and cooling needs according to the volume, the occupancy and the building envelope;
- a roof plan: location, roof curb, clearances and vertical or horizontal connection;
- coordination with your electrician for the circuit and any backup kit;
- installation by our technicians, connection to the ducts and start-up;
- an explanation of the settings and of the thermostat to the manager of the space.
If your project calls instead for a smaller capacity, or if you want to compare the brands of the Gree group, our packaged heat pumps page presents the Rooftop R32 models we install, from 2 to 5 tons.
