Small spaces: a 2 ton packaged heat pump sized as closely as possible

A condo with a rooftop terrace, a small townhouse or a recent addition does not need an oversized unit. It needs a properly sized unit, one that cools without chilling the room all at once and then shutting off, and that heats efficiently through the shoulder seasons. The 2 ton YORK PH3 heat pump meets that need with a rated capacity of 24,000 BTU/h and the narrowest cabinet in the whole PH3 series: 35.75 in. wide. The whole system in a single outdoor cabinet

A packaged heat pump brings together in one outdoor cabinet the compressor, the outdoor coil, the indoor coil and the blower that pushes the air into your ducts. Indoors, all that is left is the thermostat and the duct system: no furnace and no fan coil to fit into a closet. In a condo where every square foot counts, that is often the deciding argument. The unit sits on a roof curb or on a pad, and only the electrical connections and the supply and return ducts are done on site. YORK ships every unit fully wired, charged with R-454B refrigerant and factory tested before shipping.

Why a 2 ton rather than a bigger unit

The instinct to "go bigger, just in case" works against comfort. The PH3 uses a scroll compressor with a single stage: when it starts, it runs at full capacity. If that capacity clearly exceeds what the home needs, the thermostat setpoint is reached within a few minutes, the unit shuts off, then starts again shortly after. These short cycles multiply compressor starts and, above all, leave the moisture in the air.

In summer, dehumidification takes place on the indoor coil: the warm, humid air cools there, the water vapour condenses and the water drains into the condensate pan, a watertight, corrosion-resistant pan that meets ASHRAE 62 for indoor air quality. That work takes continuous run time. A unit matched to the real load runs longer on each cycle, pulls out more moisture and delivers the cool, dry air you appreciate during a heat wave. The performance tables in the YORK guide in fact separate total capacity from sensible capacity: the gap between the two is the moisture removed from the air.

That is why we never pick a capacity by eye. The YORK technical guide follows the same logic: you first determine the building's load, then you install the unit of the right capacity in the smallest possible footprint. We run that calculation during the estimate, taking into account the windows, the insulation, the orientation and how the rooms are occupied. The indoor blower speeds, set at the factory for cooling and for heating, can also be adjusted on site to fine-tune the balance between airflow and comfort.

A narrow cabinet for roof terraces and tight yards

At 35.75 in. wide, the 2 ton model uses the smaller of the two footprints in the series, while the 3 to 5 ton models move up to 45.75 in. Its height of 44 in. and its 340 lb operating weight make it the easiest unit to place on a roof terrace or along a narrow back yard. The base rails that run around the whole unit have lifting holes for a crane and let forklift forks in from all four sides. Where height is limited, they come off by removing two screws at each corner.

On a wood terrace or a roof covered with a class A, B or C covering, the YORK guide allows installation directly on those combustible materials, provided the factory base rails are left in place. We always check the structure before setting the unit down on it.

Clearances to allow around the unit

• 36 in. above, for the vertical discharge of the outdoor fan;
• 36 in. on the right side and on the side opposite the ducts;
• 24 in. on the left side and 6 in. on the duct panel side.

The vertical discharge works in your favour on a terrace: the outdoor fan blows the air upward, so the warm air and the running noise move away from the living space and the neighbours, and the potted plants around the unit do not dry out.

Rugged components in a smaller format

• Outdoor coil with rifled copper tubes and enhanced aluminum fins, protected by a louvred stamped metal grille;
• all-aluminum indoor coil, three rows deep, fed by factory-mounted thermostatic expansion valves (TXV);
• direct-drive indoor blower with a 1/2 HP ECM motor, mounted on a slide-out assembly that pulls out easily for cleaning;
• G90 galvanized steel cabinet finished with a powder paint tested for 1,000 hours in salt spray;
• factory-installed refrigerant detection system (RDS) and a demand defrost board with preloaded defrost curves;
• high-pressure switch, loss-of-charge switch and a compressor internally protected against high pressure and high temperature.

Backup heat matched to the home

For the coldest days, the PH3 accepts a 6HK electric heat kit installed on site. For the 2 ton model, the YORK guide lists kits of 5, 8 and 10 kW, which deliver 4.4 kW, 7.1 kW and 8.8 kW respectively at 230 V. A single-point wiring kit lets one circuit feed both the unit and the kit. Here too, we choose the kit from the heat loss calculation, without oversizing.
