Neighbourhood shop, professional practice, salon or service space: many small businesses occupy buildings supplied with 208/230 V three-phase power. For these spaces, the 3 ton YORK PH3 heat pump comes in a three-phase version. You get the cooling and the heating of a 36,000 BTU/h unit, housed in the same compact cabinet as the residential single-phase version and connected directly to the electrical supply of your building. A complete unit, installed outside your sales floor

In a business, indoor space earns its keep: it is there to display, to welcome customers or to work in. The packaged heat pump frees up that space, since all the refrigeration components and the distribution blower sit in a single outdoor cabinet, usually on the roof. The cooled or heated air comes down into the space through the supply ducts and returns to the unit through the return. No mechanical equipment takes up the back room, and the technicians do the maintenance outdoors, without disturbing your business.

What three-phase power changes

Three-phase spreads the load over three conductors. The YORK electrical data show it clearly: with no heat kit, the three-phase model calls for a circuit with a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 21.8 A, with a maximum overcurrent protection (MOP) of 30 A. The single-phase version of the same 3 ton unit requires 27.3 A and 40 A. The protection has to be provided by an HACR type breaker or a time-delay fuse, and a field-supplied disconnect is mandatory. The applied voltage has to stay between 187 and 252 V.

The backup heat follows the same logic. In three-phase, the 6HK kits offered for this model are 10 and 15 kW, that is 8.8 and 13.2 kW actual at 230 V, or 7.2 and 10.8 kW at 208 V. Single-point wiring kits (S1-2SPWK031 for 10 kW, S1-2SPWK033 for 15 kW) bring together the terminal block, the fuse holders and the wiring to feed the unit and its heating elements from a single source.

Sizing for a commercial space

A business is not calculated like a house. Display lighting, computers, work equipment, a storefront window in full sun and customers coming and going all add heat throughout the day. Our load calculation takes these gains into account to confirm that 3 tons is enough. If the result points to a larger need, the three-phase 4 and 5 ton versions of the PH3 take up the same floor footprint of 45.75 x 51.25 in.; only the height of the unit increases.

The coefficient of performance (COP) measures efficiency in heating: at 47 °F, the 3 ton PH3 delivers 3.6 units of heat for every unit of electricity it consumes. The YORK performance tables show that this efficiency is better in mild weather, which makes the heat pump a sound choice for the fall and the spring.

A discreet installation on the roof

At 47 in. high, with its rounded corners and its one-piece top cover, the PH3 has a low profile and a clean look that fit easily on a commercial roof. Its outdoor fan discharges vertically: the exhaust air and the operating noise go up rather than toward the terrace next door or the windows on the floor above. The compressor is mounted on isolators, the rigid top panel dampens the noise and the formed base of the cabinet also contributes to the sound insulation.

On the roofing side, two heights of NRCA-approved YORK roof curbs are offered, 8 in. and 14 in., with a gasket, along with a roof anchor kit certified for wind load. The bottom openings fit between standard joists at 24 in. o.c.: neither the framing nor the ducts have to be modified. The base rails include lifting holes for the crane, and the guide allows installation on a class A, B or C combustible roof covering when these factory rails stay in place.

Fresh air for customers and staff

A space that welcomes the public needs fresh air. The PH3 can take a manual outdoor air damper, adjustable from 0 to 50%, or a motorized damper with the same range that closes in the event of a power failure; both include a hood and a screen. For more demanding needs, modulating integrated economizers are offered for vertical or horizontal configurations.

Filters supplied with the unit

All the three-phase PH3 models ship with a filter rack kit and 1 in. filters, stored inside the unit when it leaves the factory. We install them at commissioning; they then stay accessible through a removable, sealed door, which makes replacing them during maintenance simple.

A simple thermostat for the whole team

On the control side, a simple 24 V wall thermostat is enough, electronic or electromechanical. The unit accepts a single-stage model in heating and in cooling, with or without an economizer: your employees have only one setpoint to adjust. YORK also offers compatible thermostats in its accessory line. Inside the cabinet, an indicator light on the control board shows the status of the unit and helps the technician find the cause of a shutdown quickly, which shortens service calls.
