From the ground floor to the upstairs: airflow that reaches everywhere

In a two-storey house or a cottage, comfort is not measured at the thermostat alone. It is measured in the upstairs bedroom in July, in the living room in January and in every room in between. The 4 ton YORK PH3 heat pump, with a nominal capacity of 48,000 BTU/h, suits this type of home well: its indoor blower, rated at 1,710 CFM, distributes the air through the existing duct system so that cooling and heating reach every level. AirGreen installs it on a pad or on a roof curb in the residential neighbourhoods of Montreal, Laval and Longueuil, as well as on the North Shore and the South Shore.

The challenge of a two-storey home

Warm air rises, cool air falls. In summer, the upper floor warms up faster than the ground floor; in winter, it is often the basement or the lower rooms that stay cool. With a packaged heat pump, a single outdoor unit conditions the air and pushes it through the whole system: the compressor, the coils and the supply blower share the same cabinet, connected to the house by a supply duct and a return duct. The result on each floor therefore comes down to two things: enough airflow and a well-balanced duct system.

1,710 CFM and an ECM blower that can be adjusted

The indoor blower of the 4 ton PH3 is a double-inlet centrifugal wheel with forward-curved blades, driven directly by a high-efficiency 3/4 HP ECM motor. The wheel is dynamically balanced to run smoothly over its entire operating range, and its sealed bearings are lubricated for life. Cooling and heating speeds are set at the factory, but we can adjust them on site to obtain the airflow that suits your ducts.

An existing duct system has its limits. YORK advises against any application where external static pressure exceeds 0.8 in. w.c. (water column). Before the installation, we therefore measure the resistance of your ducts and check for return air openings upstairs. Where needed, we add balancing dampers on the main branches to send a larger share of the air to the rooms that are short of it.

Filters sized for the airflow

A filter that is too small slows the air down before it even reaches the upper floor. On single-phase models, filters are supplied and installed on site: either in the return, in which case YORK requires them to be sized so the air velocity through a disposable filter does not exceed 300 ft/min, or in the unit, with the filter rack kit offered as an accessory, which accepts 1 or 2 in. filters. We choose the solution that best protects your airflow.

The numbers of the 4 ton PH3

  • Model PH3E48N00S21, YORK LX series, R-454B refrigerant
  • Nominal capacity of 48,000 BTU/h and AHRI net cooling of 48,500 BTU/h
  • Heating of 47,000 BTU/h at 47 °F (8.3 °C), with a COP of 3.7
  • Heating of 28,500 BTU/h at 17 °F (-8.3 °C)
  • Seasonal efficiency of 13.4 SEER2 in cooling and 6.7 HSPF2 in heating, EER2 of 11.1
  • Nominal blower airflow: 1,710 CFM (ft³/min)
  • 208/230 V single-phase power supply, 60 Hz
  • Cabinet of 45.75 x 51.25 x 50 in. (width x depth x height)
  • Operating weight of 482 lb and AHRI 270 sound level of 71.6 dBA

To exchange that much heat, the 4 ton model has a four-row all-aluminum indoor coil and a two-row outdoor coil made of rifled copper tubes and enhanced aluminum fins. Factory-installed thermostatic expansion valves meter the refrigerant, and a 26 in. outdoor fan with vertical discharge moves the air across the outdoor coil.

Ground pad or roof curb: how to choose

The PH3 connects from the side or from the bottom. It leaves the factory ready for side connections; for a bottom configuration, you simply move the two bottom panels over to the side openings, with no cutting. According to the YORK guide, the airflow difference between the two configurations is negligible: the choice is therefore made according to your house.

Criterion On a ground pad On a roof curb
Connection From the side, through the foundation wall, to a duct system in the basement or in the crawl space From the bottom, through a flat roof section, to a duct system upstairs or in the attic
Setting in place Handling at ground level; the base rails are reachable by forklift from every side Crane lift thanks to the holes provided in the base rails
Useful accessories Anchoring kit certified for wind resistance, kit that closes off the rail openings against small animals NRCA-approved roof curb of 8 or 14 in., with sealing strip
Clearances 36 in. on top, on the right and on the side opposite the ducts; 24 in. on the left Same clearances, and openings designed to fit between standard joists spaced 24 in. on centre

At ground level, we place the unit away from bedroom windows and clear of the water dripping off the roof. The vertical discharge sends the warm air upward, away from your flower beds and shrubs, provided that no overhanging structure or branch blocks the air outlet.

Backup heat up to 20 kW

In a two-storey house, electric backup heat deserves a precise calculation. For the 4 ton unit, the YORK guide lists 6HK kits of 5, 8, 10, 15 and 20 kW. The 20 kW kit runs in two stages and delivers 17.6 kW at 230 V, or 14.4 kW at 208 V. It requires 1 in. of clearance around the supply duct over the first three feet. Without a kit, the unit calls for a minimum circuit ampacity of 36.5 A and maximum overcurrent protection of 50 A; power for the unit and its kit can then be brought together at a single point with the S1-2SPWK004 wiring kit.

Trust our teams with the comfort of the whole family

AirGreen is a Montreal HVAC contractor that sells and installs its own systems. For a two-storey house, our free on-site estimate visit covers the ducts as much as the unit: we examine the air path, the returns, the dampers and the possible location on a pad or on the roof. We calculate the load of each level, confirm that 4 tons meet your needs, then our teams carry out the installation, the balancing of the duct system and the start-up. Periodic maintenance follows, to keep filters, coils and the condensate drain in good condition.

From Montreal to Laval, from Longueuil to the South Shore and out to the municipalities of the North Shore, we travel quickly to assess your home. Reach us at 514 316-2973 or through the form on airgreen.ca to book your free on-site estimate.

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor, straight from the distributor.
