Comfort in a hall that fills up and empties out as the week goes by

A community hall, a place of worship or the premises of a non-profit lives at the pace of its activities: almost empty on a Tuesday afternoon, packed for a fundraising dinner, a celebration or a general meeting. Many of these buildings, in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore as well as the South Shore, have only a single-phase electrical service. This 4 ton YORK WN packaged heat pump runs on 208/230 V single-phase and its Smart Equipment control includes protections that spare the compressor despite these variations. AirGreen installs it, programs it to your schedule and maintains it.

Variable occupancy, settings that follow along

When a hall fills up, the temperature climbs quickly; when it empties out, demand drops. Without protection, the compressor would risk starting and stopping over and over. The control includes an anti-short-cycle delay and programmable minimum run times that protect the compressor against these overly brief cycles. For testing, our technicians can temporarily bypass this delay at the press of a button.

The fan delays on start-up and on shutdown are fully programmable, and the heating ones are independent of the cooling ones. Every unit leaves the factory with default values suited to its configuration; we then adjust them to the volume of your hall and to the location of the supply grilles. Occupied mode, for its part, is driven by the thermostat: its OCC output tells the unit when the hall is occupied according to the programmed schedule.

What we program at start-up

  1. Removal of the factory-installed jumper between terminals R and OCC, so that the thermostat's occupancy schedule is actually taken into account.
  2. The fan delays in heating and in cooling, according to the height of the hall and the location of the grilles.
  3. The minimum run times of the compressor.
  4. The economizer setpoint and, where needed, the compressor lockout when outdoor air is enough to cool.
  5. Verification of the airflow and of the operation of the electric heat kit.

Fresh air for large gatherings

The WN048C00B1CAACA1A1 configuration shown here includes a factory-installed economizer, without a barometric relief damper. It can bring in up to 100% outdoor air: when the hall is full and the air outside is cool, it cools without running the compressor. Its AMCA 511 class 1A low-leakage dampers and its spring-return modulating motors are fully managed by the Smart Equipment control. For a heavily used hall, a field-installed CO2 sensor can automatically take priority over the economizer command when the CO2 level goes above the set limits. A barometric relief damper can also be added to avoid over-pressurization.

For the rest, the unit comes from the factory with the RDS refrigerant detector and the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus or N2 communication card; its supply blower is belt-driven (standard static pressure), its coils are of standard build and its disposable filters are 1 in. thick. In single-phase, this is the only configuration we offer in the 4 ton size, and at the estimate we confirm with you that it meets the needs of your building.

A refrigerant monitored at all times

R-454B is an A2L refrigerant, that is, mildly flammable, with a low global warming potential. In a building that welcomes the public, the RDS refrigerant detector supplied with the unit provides continuous monitoring. Its sensors, wired to the control, set off an alarm as soon as they detect in the cabinet a concentration corresponding to 25% of the lower flammability limit, then automatically start a dilution sequence. This protection comes on top of the high and low pressure switches, the freeze protections and the internal protection of the compressor.

A single cabinet, on the roof or at ground level

A packaged heat pump houses the scroll compressor, the coils and the fans in the same outdoor cabinet, connected to the supply and return ducts of the hall. No mechanical equipment takes up space in the basement or the sacristy. If the roof is sloped, as is often the case with a church, the unit can rest on a ground pad or on steel beams; the duct connections are then made horizontally, from the back.

Single-phase and backup heat: the calculations to run

According to the YORK electrical tables, this model calls for a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 37.5 A and a fuse or a breaker of no more than 50 A without electric heat. In single-phase, YORK offers the E05 to E20 kits for this size; with the E20, the MCA reaches 133 A at 208 V and 147.9 A at 230 V. YORK also requires a minimum airflow of 1,200 CFM with electric heat. Since the capacity of the heat pump goes from 44,000 BTU/h at 47 °F to 26,000 BTU/h at 17 °F, the choice of kit follows from a heat loss calculation, weighed against the capacity of your electrical service.

Discretion and the neighbours

YORK does not publish an AHRI 270 sound rating for the 4 ton size. The compressor does, however, have internal spring isolation and sound insulation that reduce vibration and noise, and it rests on its own isolated mount. The outdoor fan blows vertically. We choose the location with the windows of the hall and the neighbouring houses in mind.

Simple maintenance for a building run by volunteers

The LCD screen shows the status of the unit and the fault codes, and the board keeps the last five alarms, even after a power failure. The “three times, then lockout” logic keeps an isolated trip of a pressure switch from locking out the compressor. On our visits, we replace the filters (two 15 x 20 in. and one 14 x 25 in.), clean the coils, check the belt and the economizer, then review the fault history through the USB port.

Trust AirGreen with the comfort of your hall

The first visit is a free on-site estimate: we examine the roof or the location at ground level, the single-phase service and the ducts, then we calculate the loads according to the actual occupancy of the hall. Our teams install, program and commission the unit, then look after its maintenance.
