Fresh, well-filtered air for daycare rooms and classrooms

In a daycare, a CPE, an elementary school or a school annex, air quality counts as much as temperature. Children spend the day in densely occupied rooms, where the outdoor air supply, the filtration and the regularity of the maintenance are decisive. This 4 ton YORK WN packaged heat pump, powered in 208/230 V three-phase, heats and cools these spaces from a single unit installed on the roof. AirGreen offers it to institutions in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, with a maintenance plan matched to the institution's calendar.

A packaged heat pump serving a school annex

A packaged heat pump brings together the scroll compressor, the coils and the fans in a single outdoor cabinet, tied to the supply and return duct system. For an annex or a pavilion, it is a sensible solution: no mechanical room to build, no noisy equipment in the rooms and all the maintenance is done outside, without disturbing the groups. In summer, the unit cools; in winter, it heats, with a field-installed electric backup kit for the coldest days.

Outdoor air up to 100%: choosing the right configuration

One point to note: the WN048C00B2AAACA1A1 shown on this page has no economizer. It ships with the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus or N2 communication card, the RDS refrigerant detector, a belt-driven supply blower (standard static pressure), standard coils and 1 in. disposable filters. For a daycare room or a classroom, where the fresh air supply is central, YORK builds two other three-phase versions at the factory:

  • WN048C00B2CAACA1A1: adds a factory-installed economizer (without a barometric relief damper).
  • WN048C00B2CBACA1A1: adds the same economizer and a factory-installed disconnect switch, on top of the RDS.

The economizer admits up to 100% outdoor air. Its spring-return modulating motors open the outdoor air dampers as the return dampers close, and the changeover between mechanical cooling and outdoor air is set by the outdoor dry-bulb temperature. The AMCA 511 class 1A low-leakage dampers, tested over 60,000 cycles, are designed to exceed the requirements of ASHRAE 90.1 and of the IECC. An economizer can also be added in the field on the model shown here. We confirm the right configuration during the estimate, according to the ventilation needs of your rooms.

Filtration: the 2 in. filter option

The unit takes two 15 x 20 in. filters and one 14 x 25 in. filter, reachable through a removable door. The rack accepts 1 in. or 2 in. filters. Standard units ship with 1 in. disposable filters, and YORK offers 2 in. MERV 8 pleated filters as a factory option. At a maintenance visit, we can therefore switch to 2 in. pleated filters. Since the blower performance tables are established with 1 in. filters, we then check the static pressure and adjust the adjustable-pitch drive pulley to keep the right airflow.

The condensate pan is internally sloped and meets the ASHRAE 62-89 self-draining standard, which prevents standing water. A dirty filter switch, offered as a factory option or as an accessory, lights the thermostat's fault indicator when the pressure drop across the filters becomes abnormally high.

A control your buildings department can follow

The factory-installed communication card links the Smart Equipment control to the building management system over BACnet MS/TP, or over Modbus or N2 after programming. The buildings department of a school service centre or the manager of a CPE can then fit the unit into its schedules: occupied mode is commanded by the thermostat or by the management system, once the factory-installed R-OCC jumper is removed. Supply, return and outdoor air sensors are supplied as standard, and the LCD display shows the temperatures, the current mode and the fault codes. The anti-short-cycle delay and the programmable fan delays round out these settings.

Maintenance planned around the institution's calendar

  1. Before the heating season: filter replacement, check of the electric kit, of the limit controls and of the operation in heat pump mode.
  2. In spring: coil cleaning, check of the condensate drain, of the belt and, where applicable, of the economizer dampers.
  3. At every visit: reading the fault codes on the LCD display and pulling the history through the USB port; the board keeps the last five alarms, even after a power failure.

Protections designed for places used by children

The RDS refrigerant detector monitors the cabinet continuously; if it detects R-454B, it triggers an alarm and automatically starts a dilution sequence. YORK also offers optional smoke detectors in the supply air or the return air, which cut the power to the control in the presence of smoke, as well as security bars to install in the supply and return openings to prevent access to the ducts.

Three-phase power supply and backup heat

According to the YORK electrical tables, this model calls for a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 23.1 A and a fuse or a breaker of at most 30 A with no electric heat. With the E20 kit, the largest offered for this size, the MCA rises to 78.2 A at 208 V and 86.9 A at 230 V. A minimum airflow of 1,200 CFM is required with electric heat. On the heating side, the heat pump delivers 44,000 BTU/h at 47 °F and 26,000 BTU/h at 17 °F; the electric kit, chosen between E05 and E20, tops up the heat supply according to the losses calculated for your rooms.

Work planned with your management

The process begins with a free on-site estimate: roof survey, check of the power supply, load calculation based on the occupancy of the rooms and choice of the configuration with or without an economizer. We then plan the work with your management, outside of activity hours when possible, and we handle the commissioning and the maintenance.
