Replacing an end-of-life rooftop unit on a building fed at 575 V

On many commercial and industrial buildings, the original rooftop unit reaches the end of its service life: repeat repairs, parts that are hard to find, uneven comfort. If your building is fed at 575 V three-phase, this 5-ton YORK WN packaged heat pump connects directly to that voltage, with no transformer, and arrives with an economizer already installed at the factory. AirGreen takes on the whole replacement, from the roof survey through to commissioning, in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore.

Before the replacement: the survey we carry out

  • The dimensions and the condition of the existing roof curb, as well as the position of the supply and return openings.
  • The 575 V supply, the disconnect and the run of the wiring to the unit.
  • The structure and the crane access, including the room to manoeuvre at grade.
  • The clear space around the location, including the 72 in. required above the unit to discharge the condenser air.
  • The heating and cooling loads of the rooms served, to confirm that 5 tons is the right size.

One common roof curb from 3 to 5 tons

In the KE/WN series, every model and every configuration shares the same cabinet, the same footprint and therefore the same roof curb. YORK points out the benefit: you can install a curb, then choose the capacity and the heating mode once the indoor loads are settled. For your building, that means a future change to the rooms will be made on the same curb, with a 3, 4 or 5 ton model.

A curb designed for another manufacturer or another generation of unit does not necessarily have the same dimensions. During the survey, we compare the existing curb against the YORK template. If needed, we install an 8 in. or 14 in. YORK curb: built to NRCA requirements, these curbs ship knocked down, nest inside the unit's base rails and include a nailing strip and duct supports; a gasket goes on the curb frame and on every duct bearing surface.

A complete heat pump in the same footprint

Like the old unit, the WN is a packaged unit: scroll compressor, indoor and outdoor coils, supply blower and condenser fan all sit in a single cabinet set on the roof and tied into the existing ducts. What sets it apart: it works as a heat pump, cools in summer and heats in winter by reversing its cycle, and a field-installed electric heat kit tops up the heat output during deep cold. The connections are made from below, through the roof curb, or horizontally, which makes it easier to adapt to the duct system already in place.

Technical data for the WN060C00B5CAACA1A1

  • Net AHRI cooling: 56,000 BTU/h, EER2 of 10.2
  • Heating at 47 °F (8.3 °C): 52,000 BTU/h, COP of 3.35
  • Heating at 17 °F (-8.3 °C): 31,800 BTU/h, COP of 2.2
  • Published seasonal efficiency: 13.4 SEER2 / 6.7 HSPF2, that is 14.0 SEER / 8.0 HSPF
  • Rated airflow: 1,900 CFM
  • Power supply: 575 V three-phase, 60 Hz (applied voltage from 540 to 630 V)
  • Dimensions (width x length x height): 44.88 x 82.25 x 32.63 in.
  • Operating weight: 620 lb (625 lb shipping), without the economizer, which adds 50 lb
  • Outdoor sound level (AHRI 270): 88 dB(A) in cooling, 86 dB(A) in heating
  • Refrigerant: R-454B, an A2L with a low global warming potential

The model offered, the WN060C00B5CAACA1A1, is the only 575 V configuration we carry in this size. It arrives from the factory with:

  • an economizer without a barometric relief damper, ready to bring in up to 100% outdoor air;
  • the BACnet MS/TP communication card, programmable for Modbus or N2;
  • the RDS refrigerant detector;
  • a belt-drive supply blower, at standard static pressure;
  • uncoated coils and 1 in. disposable filters.

At the estimate, we confirm with you that this equipment matches your building.

The lift, step by step

  1. Disconnection and removal of the old unit, then inspection of the curb and of the weather seal.
  2. Preparation of the curb: new gasket or new YORK curb depending on the survey.
  3. Crane lift of the new unit, using the lifting holes at the four corners of the full-length base rails.
  4. 575 V electrical connection (entry on the side or from below), control wiring, ducts and condensate drain.

The 575 V connection

According to the YORK electrical tables, this model calls for a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 11.9 A and a fuse of no more than 15 A without electric heat. At 575 V, the backup kits offered are the E10, E15, E20 and E30; those of 20 kW and up work in two stages. With the E30 kit, the MCA reaches 48.5 A and the maximum fuse 50 A. A minimum airflow of 1,500 CFM is required with electric heat.

Commissioning by our technicians

Every unit is configured and tested at the factory, but it is the on-site commissioning that adapts it to your building. Here is what our technicians check and set:

  1. The measured voltage, within the 540 to 630 V range allowed by YORK.
  2. The removal of the factory-installed R-OCC jumper, so that the thermostat or the management system commands occupied mode.
  3. The airflow, measured at the ports on the outside of the cabinet and adjusted with the adjustable-pitch drive pulley.
  4. The economizer set point, the fan delays and the minimum run times of the compressor.
  5. The operation of the electric heat kit, of its stages and of its limit switch.
  6. The start-up report, pulled through the USB port of the Smart Equipment control, which we keep in your file.

Diagnostics that simplify maintenance in the years ahead

After years of repairs on the old unit, the Smart Equipment control changes the way maintenance is done. Every alarm flashes a code on the LCD screen and lights the fault indicator on the thermostat, if it has one. The board keeps the last five alarms in memory, even after a power failure, and the USB port gives access to the data logging and the fault history. The "three times, then stop" logic keeps a one-off trip of a pressure switch or of a freeze protection from locking out the compressor, which cuts down on needless service calls.

A turnkey replacement, entrusted to AirGreen

Our free on-site estimate covers the survey of the existing curb, of the 575 V supply and of the crane access, along with the load calculations. Our teams then coordinate the removal of the old unit, the lift, the connections, the commissioning and the maintenance in the years that follow.
