Packaged Heat Pump System York WN 5 Ton | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore and North Shore
Five tons for the ground-floor business, with no three-phase service
The mixed-use building is part of the landscape in our neighbourhoods: a grocery store, a shop, a café or a clinic on the ground floor, apartments upstairs. The commercial space is often large, well glazed and busy, while the building has only a single-phase supply. This 5 ton YORK WN packaged heat pump answers exactly that case: full commercial capacity on 208/230 V single-phase, with no request for three-phase service. AirGreen offers it to building owners and business owners in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, from the estimate through to maintenance.
The particular challenge of a mixed-use building
A large commercial space calls for a commercial-grade unit, while the electrical service of the building was designed for apartments. The KE/WN series is offered in 208/230-1-60 for the 3 to 5 ton sizes, which makes it possible to go up to 5 tons without redoing the electrical service in three-phase. What remains is to choose the location of the unit carefully, to check the capacity of the panel and to size the backup heat: that is where our assessment makes the difference.
Where to install the unit when there are apartments above
Setting the unit on the main roof would mean running the ducts down through the apartments. In a mixed-use building, other locations are often simpler:
- On the roof of an annex or of a single-storey addition at the back, with ducts that drop straight into the commercial space.
- At ground level, on a pad, in the yard or along the lane, with horizontal ducts that go through the back wall. Every model connects from below or horizontally.
- On steel beams above a finished roof, when the structure and the access call for it.
Having apartments right next door also means taking noise into account. For this size, YORK publishes an outdoor sound rating of 88 dB(A) in cooling and 86 dB(A) in heating, to the AHRI 270 standard. The outdoor fan, two-speed on the 5 ton model, discharges vertically. We place the unit away from bedroom windows and balconies, keeping 72 in. clear above it for the condenser air discharge.
A complete unit in a single cabinet
The packaged heat pump brings together the scroll compressor, the indoor and outdoor coils, the supply blower and the condenser fan in a galvanized steel cabinet, protected by a powder paint proven in a 750-hour salt spray test. No equipment takes up the stockroom or the ceiling of the business: the unit simply connects to the supply and return ducts. It arrives charged with refrigerant, wired, piped and tested at the factory.

The electrical picture on single-phase
According to the YORK electrical tables, this model (standard belt-drive blower, without a powered convenience outlet) calls for a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 50.8 A and a fuse or breaker of no more than 70 A, without electric heat. On single-phase, the backup heat kits run from E05 to E30. The E30 kit, which works in two stages, delivers 22.2 kW at 208 V and 29.6 kW at 230 V; with it, the MCA reaches 184.2 A at 208 V and 204.9 A at 230 V. Those currents weigh heavily on a single-phase service: before choosing a kit, we go through the load calculation of the space with your master electrician. With electric heat, a minimum airflow of 1,500 CFM is required.
The heating capacity of the heat pump drops with the outdoor temperature, from 52,000 BTU/h at 47 °F to 31,800 BTU/h at 17 °F. The right kit is therefore the one that covers the real heat loss of the space in deep cold, without overloading the electrical service.
The configuration we supply
On single-phase, we offer this 5 ton unit in a single factory configuration, the WN060C00B1AAACA1A1. It includes the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus or N2 communication card and the RDS refrigerant detector, with a belt-drive supply blower (standard static pressure), standard coils and 1 in. disposable filters; it has no economizer. Control works with a conventional thermostat wired to the screw terminal block; the communication card stays available if the building ever gets a management system. An economizer can also be added in the field. We confirm the right configuration during the estimate.
A roof curb that follows the changes in your tenants
In a mixed-use building, the ground-floor business sometimes changes purpose: a shop can give way to an office, a café to a clinic. All the WN models from 3 to 5 tons share the same cabinet, the same footprint and therefore the same roof curb. If a future tenant has different needs, another size in the series installs in the same spot, on the same curb and with the same duct openings.
Living on good terms with the tenants
All maintenance is done at the unit, outdoors, without going into the apartments. Supply air, return air and outdoor air sensors are installed at the factory; the LCD screen shows these temperatures and the fault codes, and the board keeps the last five alarms, which our technicians also pull through the USB port. Low ambient control makes it possible to cool down to 0 °F (-17.8 °C) outdoor, useful for a business that builds up heat even out of season. The anti-short-cycle delay, the high and low pressure switches and the freeze protections protect the compressor. YORK also offers optional smoke detectors that shut the unit down if smoke is detected in the air compartment, an option we go over with you for an occupied building.
AirGreen takes care of your mixed-use building, from the estimate to maintenance
During the free on-site estimate, we choose the location of the unit with you, check the single-phase electrical service, calculate the loads of the space and plan the duct routing. Our crews carry out the installation, the commissioning and the seasonal maintenance.
