A full dining room, a busy kitchen: 5 tons and 1,900 CFM to keep up

A restaurant at lunchtime, a shop on a Saturday sale day, a showroom where customers come one after the other: in these businesses, occupancy drives the temperature and the humidity up quickly. This 5 ton YORK WN packaged heat pump, powered in 208/230 V three-phase, moves 1,900 CFM and delivers 56,000 BTU/h of net cooling. With the versions fitted with an economizer, it also takes advantage of the cool spring and fall air to cool without the compressor. AirGreen installs it in the restaurants and the businesses of Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

All the equipment on the roof, nothing in the dining room

A packaged heat pump gathers the scroll compressor, the coils, the condenser fan and the supply fan into a single outdoor cabinet. Installed on the roof of the business, it connects to the supply and return ducts of the dining room, from below or horizontally. No furnace and no coil takes up the stockroom, the kitchen or the dropped ceiling, and our technicians do the maintenance on the roof, without interrupting service. In winter, the same unit heats in heat pump mode, with an electric backup kit installed in the field.

Sensible heat and latent heat: why a packed room is demanding

Every customer gives off heat, but also moisture. In a restaurant, the cooking, the dishwasher and the doors opening non-stop add even more water vapour. This moisture makes up the latent load: if the unit does not remove it, the room stays clammy even when the thermostat reads the right temperature. The indoor coil on this model has four rows, with a face area of 5.06 ft², 13 fins per inch and a thermostatic expansion valve: a coil built to cool and dehumidify the air that passes through it.

YORK publishes detailed tables of total capacity and sensible capacity according to airflow and indoor conditions. We use them to set the belt-driven fan, thanks to its adjustable-pitch motor sheave, to the airflow that suits your room: a well-chosen airflow balances the cooling of the air and the removal of moisture. This is a setting we make at commissioning, with readings to back it up, using the fan performance measurement ports located on the outside of the cabinet.

The economizer, for free cooling in mid-season

Even in April or October, a full room and a kitchen in operation often call for cooling. The economizer then opens the outdoor air dampers, up to 100%, while the return dampers close, and lets the cool air do the compressor's work. Running the economizer and the compressor at the same time is also possible when outdoor air alone is not enough. The switch from one mode to the other is set by the outdoor dry bulb temperature; single or dual enthalpy kits, installed in the field, make it possible to account for the humidity of the outdoor air, an advantage for a room where the latent load is high.

The model shown on this page does not have one. YORK builds two other three-phase versions of this size at the factory:

Model Economizer Factory disconnect BACnet / Modbus / N2 card
WN060C00B2AAACA1A1 (shown here) No No Yes
WN060C00B2CAACA1A1 Yes, without barometric relief damper No Yes
WN060C00B2CBACA1A1 Yes, without barometric relief damper Yes Yes

All three include a belt-driven fan (standard static pressure), the RDS refrigerant detector, standard coils and 1 in. disposable filters. The final choice is made with you: AirGreen confirms the best-suited configuration during the estimate. If you choose the economizer, we also plan for the relief of the excess air: barometric relief damper or power exhaust, the latter requiring the ducts to be connected from below. YORK points out that with 100% outdoor air, the pressure drop across the economizer increases, and that if the return duct resistance is below 0.25 in. of water column, the unit delivers less airflow in full economizer mode; we take this into account when we size the ducts.

Three-phase supply and heat on winter mornings

According to the YORK electrical tables, this model calls for a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 29.1 A and a fuse or a breaker of no more than 40 A without electric heat. The backup kits run from E05 to E30; with the E30 kit, the MCA reaches 106.1 A at 208 V and 118.1 A at 230 V. In the morning, before opening, the heat pump delivers 52,000 BTU/h at 47 °F and 31,800 BTU/h at 17 °F, and the electric kit tops up the heat in deep cold. The electric heat requires a minimum airflow of 1,500 CFM.

Installation tips for a busy business

  • Roof curb: YORK offers curbs 8 in. and 14 in. high, shipped knocked down; the unit's rails frame the curb, which makes a watertight joint with the finished roof.
  • Lifting: the full-length base rails have lifting holes for the crane and accept a forklift on three sides.
  • Filters: two 15 x 20 in. filters and one 14 x 25 in. filter, 1 in. or 2 in. thick; a dirty filter switch, offered as an option, reports an abnormal pressure drop to the thermostat.
  • Roof: the electrical supply enters at a single point, from the side or from below, which limits the penetrations.

A control that takes the rush in stride

The Smart Equipment control applies a short-cycle delay and minimum run times, watches every pressure switch and every freeze protection, and keeps the last five alarms. The communication card installed at the factory makes it possible to link the unit to a management system on BACnet MS/TP, Modbus or N2, handy for a chain that follows several locations.
