Packaged Heat Pump System York WP 7.5 Ton Three-Phase | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore and North Shore
The 7.5 ton Sun Pro WP: the R-454B generation for commercial projects meant to last
Whether it is a new building or a rooftop unit that has reached the end of its service life, the owner of a mid-size business today has two generations of refrigerant to choose from. This 7.5 ton YORK Sun Pro WP packaged heat pump represents the R-454B generation of the Sun Pro line: a rooftop unit fed in 208/230 V three-phase, with two scroll compressors, an EER of 12.2, an IEER of 16.0 and a factory-installed refrigerant detector. AirGreen offers it, installs it and maintains it for businesses, offices and buildings in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.
A commercial-grade packaged heat pump
A packaged heat pump gathers the compressors, the coils, the fans and the control in a single outdoor cabinet. Set on a roof curb, on a pad or on a steel structure, it connects directly to the supply and return ducts of the building. In summer it cools; the rest of the year it heats by reversing its cycle, and an electric heat kit can top up its capacity in deep cold. No equipment takes up the sales floor, the stockroom or the drop ceiling, and our technicians carry out the maintenance on the roof, without disturbing your occupants. Every Sun Pro unit leaves the factory charged with refrigerant, wired, piped and tested, which simplifies the work in the field.
WP090 or XP090: what the R-454B generation changes
AirGreen also offers the R-410A version in the same size, the Sun Pro XP090. Both units share a cabinet of the same dimensions and an identical weight, but their cooling ratings differ. Here is the comparison, taken from the YORK technical guides for each series:
| Specification | WP090 (R-454B) | XP090 (R-410A) |
|---|---|---|
| AHRI net cooling | 96,000 BTU/h | 92,000 BTU/h |
| EER | 12.2 | 11.2 |
| IEER with IntelliSpeed | 16.0 | 14.6 |
| Heating at 47 °F (8.3 °C) | 87,000 BTU/h, COP of 3.5 | 87,000 BTU/h, COP of 3.5 |
| Heating at 17 °F (-8.3 °C) | 51,000 BTU/h, COP of 2.25 | 51,000 BTU/h, COP of 2.25 |
| Nominal airflow | 3,000 CFM | 3,000 CFM |
| Dimensions (width x length x height) | 59 x 89 x 50.75 in. | 59 x 89 x 50.75 in. |
| Operating weight | 1,090 lb | 1,090 lb |
In heating, both units post the same ratings. In cooling, the WP delivers 4,000 BTU/h more in net cooling, with an EER one point higher and an IEER 1.4 point higher. Since the footprint and the weight are the same, the choice comes down to the refrigerant and to the cooling performance, and not to the space available on the roof.
R-454B and the refrigerant detection system
R-454B is a class A2L refrigerant with a low global warming potential. Each of the two refrigerant circuits of the WP090 holds 12 lb 0 oz of it. According to its nomenclature, this model ships with the refrigerant detection system (RDS): built-in sensors, tied to the unit control, automatically start a dilution sequence and set off an alarm when they detect refrigerant in the cabinet, at a concentration matching 25% of the lower flammability limit.

The factory configuration, option by option
Read against the nomenclature of the YORK technical guide, model number WP090C00R2BABAA1A1 describes the following equipment:
- IntelliSpeed drive with a high static pressure belt drive (3 HP motor): the supply fan speed varies according to the number of compressors or heating stages that are running.
- Economizer with a barometric relief damper, able to admit up to 100% outdoor air.
- Refrigerant detection system (RDS) and phase monitor, which stops the unit in the event of a lost phase or a reversed rotation.
- Stand-alone Smart Equipment control, compatible with a thermostat or a zone sensor.
- Standard coils, without E-Coat coating, 2 in. disposable filters and standard cabinet.
- No factory-installed electric heat, no disconnect switch and no convenience outlet: these are added in the field according to your needs.
Two stages and a variable-speed fan
The two compressors feed two independent refrigerant circuits, each with its own filter drier and its high and low pressure switches. On a mild day, a single compressor delivers half the capacity; the second starts when occupancy, lighting and sun add up. With the IntelliSpeed drive, the supply fan slows down on the first stage, then speeds up on the second, and the minimum position of the economizer can follow the drive frequency. It is this part-load operation that the IEER of 16.0 reflects, while the EER of 12.2 describes performance at full load. A compressor lead-lag function, selectable on the control board, also evens out their run hours.
The economizer on this model comes with AMCA 511 class 1A low-leakage dampers, which hold leakage to 3 CFM per square foot at 1 in. of static pressure, and every economizer goes through a 60,000 cycle test. Its modulating spring-return actuators open the outdoor air as the return closes, to cool without the compressor in the shoulder seasons.
208/230 V supply and backup heat
According to the YORK electrical tables, this configuration with a high static pressure motor, without a powered convenience outlet, calls for a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 43.8 A and a protection of no more than 50 A without electric heat. Four heat kits are planned for this size: E09, E18, E24 and E36. They deliver 6.8, 13.5, 18 and 25.5 kW at 208 V respectively, or 9, 18, 24 and 34 kW at 230 V; from the E18 up, they work in two stages, and all are designed for a single point of supply. With the E36 kit, the MCA reaches 132.3 A at 208 V and 146.1 A at 230 V. Since the heat pump delivers 87,000 BTU/h at 47 °F and 51,000 BTU/h at 17 °F, we choose the kit from the actual heat loss of the building and the capacity of your electrical entrance.
Designed for maintenance
- Tool-free hinged panels for the control box, the compressors, the filters, the motor and the supply fan, screwed shut at the factory to block access by unauthorized people.
- Service windows in both condenser walls to clean and inspect the coils.
- Non-corrosive condensate pan that slides out of the unit from the back, with a rigidly mounted 3/4 in. female drain connection.
- Fan performance measurement taps outside the cabinet, and a sliding motor and fan assembly.
- A second nameplate inside the control door, sheltered from the weather.
- Smart Equipment control with an LCD display, a USB port, a fault history and lockout of only the compressor concerned after three trips in two hours.
Getting the rooftop installation right
- Roof curb: YORK curbs of 8 in. (1RC0470) or 14 in. (1RC0471), with an insulated deck, shipped knocked down; a 10 in. transition curb (1RC0472) picks up the footprint of an older Sunline unit of 7.5 to 12.5 tons.
- Lifting: full perimeter base rails with lifting holes for the crane and lift truck access on three sides.
- Clearances: 72 in. above, 36 in. at the front, at the back and on the left, 12 in. on the right; the unit can sit on a combustible floor or on a class A, B or C roof covering.
- Ducts: conversion between a side connection and a bottom connection by moving the factory covers, with no panel cutting.
- Operating range: cooling down to 0 °F (-17.8 °C) outdoors for the comfort of the occupants thanks to the built-in low ambient control, and operation up to 125 °F (52 °C).
AirGreen, from the estimate to the maintenance of your Sun Pro WP
It all starts with a free on-site estimate. We survey the area and the occupancy of your space, the condition of the ducts, the capacity of your three-phase entrance and the roof access for the crane, then we lay out clearly the two 7.5 ton options, R-454B and R-410A. Our crews then install the unit, set the IntelliSpeed drive, the economizer and the Smart Equipment control at commissioning, and handle the scheduled maintenance: filters, coils, belt, condensate pan and a read of the fault history.
