Four tons of comfort for your business, without three-phase service

A hair salon, a small grocery, a professional office or a ground-floor space in a mixed-use building: plenty of businesses have only a single-phase electrical service. Having three-phase service brought in for a single rooftop unit can call for major electrical work. The WQE05A1B1AB5A111A1 model avoids that detour: this 4 ton YORK Sun Core packaged heat pump (48,000 BTU/h nominal) runs on 208/230 V single-phase, 60 Hz. AirGreen sells, installs and maintains it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore.

In the Sun Core lineup, single-phase power is reserved for the 3 to 5 ton models. The WQE series is the standard-efficiency version, with R-454B refrigerant, without factory-installed heat: an electric kit is added in the field according to your needs.

The packaged unit, seen from the electrical side

A packaged heat pump brings the entire system together in a single outdoor cabinet, set on the roof or at ground level and connected to the supply and return ducts of the space. Compressor, coils, indoor blower, filters, control and, where applicable, heating elements share the same cabinet. For your electrician, that means a single main feed to plan for, plus the low-voltage thermostat wiring. There is no separate indoor unit to power and no refrigerant piping to run through the building.

Model specifications

  • Power supply: 208/230 V single-phase, 60 Hz; allowable applied voltage from 187 V to 252 V
  • Capacity: 4 tons, that is 48,000 BTU/h nominal
  • Net cooling per AHRI: 48,000 BTU/h
  • Heating at 47 °F (8.3 °C): 45,600 BTU/h with a COP of 3.5
  • Heating at 17 °F (-8.3 °C): 24,600 BTU/h with a COP of 2.15
  • Efficiency ratings: 14.0 SEER2, 6.7 HSPF2 and 12.2 EER2
  • Nominal airflow: 1,550 CFM (ft³/min)
  • Footprint: 48.9 in. wide, 74.1 in. long and 40.6 in. high (48.9 x 74.1 x 40.6 in.)
  • Operating weight: 628 lb
  • Outdoor sound rating per AHRI 270: 78.4 dBA

These ratings are identical to those of the 4 ton three-phase version: going single-phase costs you neither capacity nor efficiency.

Reference electrical data

The YORK technical guide publishes the following values for this configuration (medium static pressure blower, without a powered convenience outlet or a powered exhaust). The scroll compressor has a rated load amperage (RLA) of 19.4 A and a locked rotor amperage (LRA) of 102 A.

Configuration 208 V single-phase 230 V single-phase
Without backup heat: minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) 33.9 A 33.6 A
Without backup heat: maximum fuse or breaker size 50 A 50 A
Kit 2EK04511125: heat delivered 7.9 kW 10.5 kW
Kit 2EK04511125: minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) 81.4 A 88.4 A
Kit 2EK04511125: maximum fuse or breaker size 90 A 90 A

These figures are used for planning; the nameplate of the unit delivered remains the reference for the final circuit sizing.

Backup heat: 208 V or 230 V, the difference counts

The YORK 2EK04511125 kit is offered for the small cabinet in 208/230 V, single-phase or three-phase. It is rated 10.5 kW at 230 V, but delivers only 7.9 kW when the actual voltage is 208 V. We therefore measure the available voltage before confirming your backup heat requirement. The factory non-fused disconnect comes in 60 A and in 100 A; YORK points out that it may be insufficient with certain heat kits. Above 100 A, it has to be removed and an external disconnect of the appropriate size installed.

A blower and a control designed for this power supply

The model number carries a B in the eighth position, which corresponds, in YORK's nomenclature, to the medium static pressure blower. On this single-phase version, the belt-driven centrifugal blower gets a 1.5 HP motor fitted with an adjustable-pitch drive sheave. The high static pressure option is reserved for three-phase models; for demanding ducts, we therefore check the static pressure before confirming this choice.

The Smart Equipment control continuously monitors the voltage supplied to the unit and protects it in the event of a voltage drop or any other electrical deviation. It adds an anti-short-cycle delay, programmable minimum run times and independent fan delays in heating and in cooling. The built-in LCD screen shows the unit status, the supply, return and outdoor air temperatures as well as the fault codes. With a simple USB key, the built-in port makes it possible to retrieve current and previous faults and to update the software. The model code also provides for the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus and N2 communication card as well as the refrigerant detection system (RDS), which monitors leaks of R-454B, an A2L refrigerant with a low global warming potential.

Construction and compatible accessories

  • Single scroll compressor, a single circuit, thermostatic expansion valve (TXV), filter-drier and high and low pressure switches
  • Coils with copper tubes and aluminum fins; direct-drive outdoor fan, dynamically balanced
  • Four 16 x 16 x 2 in. filters, MERV 4 as supplied, replaceable with MERV 8 or MERV 13 filters thanks to the tool-less access panel
  • Vertical or horizontal flow economizers offered for all voltages, and powered exhausts in a 208/230 V single-phase version
  • Louvered hail guard (kit 1HG0420 for the tall cabinet)
  • 120 V convenience outlet with ground fault circuit interrupter, as a factory option
  • Full perimeter base compatible with many existing roof curbs, or YORK curbs of 14 in. and 24 in.

What we check before the installation

  1. The capacity of the electrical panel and of the existing single-phase service, with or without backup heat.
  2. The actual voltage (208 V or 230 V), which determines the heat delivered by the electric kit.
  3. The condition and the dimensions of the roof curb, as well as the duct openings from underneath or from the side.
  4. The lift, the service clearances around the cabinet and the condensate drainage.

From the electrical service to the start-up, AirGreen takes care of everything

A single-phase packaged heat pump project calls for close coordination between the capacity of the unit, the electrical circuit and the roof. Our teams carry out the free on-site estimate, the load calculation for your space, the selection of the heat kit, the complete installation and the start-up. We then stay available for the regular maintenance of your unit: filters, belt, coils and a reading of the fault log. As a Montreal HVAC contractor, we work quickly and efficiently, scheduling the work around your business hours.
