Clear data to manage a 4 ton rooftop unit

When a tenant reports that it is too warm, a building manager wants to know quickly what is happening on the roof: whether the unit is running normally, whether a safety has tripped or whether the airflow is adequate. For that kind of follow-up, the built-in control counts as much as the capacity. That is the strength of this WQE05A2B1AB5A111A1 model: a 4 ton YORK Sun Core packaged heat pump (48,000 BTU/h nominal), in 208/230 V three-phase, that records and displays what it is doing. AirGreen installs and maintains it in the commercial and rental buildings of Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

The WQE series is the standard-efficiency version of the Sun Core line. It runs on R-454B, an A2L refrigerant with a low global warming potential, and receives its electric backup heat in the field.

What the LCD display shows right on the unit

The Smart Equipment control has a readable LCD display, a navigation joystick and buttons. The technician goes through the menus quickly, right on the unit:

  • the status of the unit and the function in progress (cooling, heating, ventilation);
  • the options configured at the factory;
  • the supply air, return air and outdoor air temperatures, measured by factory-installed sensors;
  • the fault codes and other operating information.

The USB port: history, reports and updates

An ordinary USB key is all it takes to make use of the port built into the control board. It gives access to the data logging, to the current and previous faults, as well as to the self-test and start-up reports. The same port is used to update the control software. YORK adds energy consumption tracking functions, which allow operation to be adjusted to the time periods and the occupancy level of the building. For you, that means better documented service visits and decisions based on facts rather than on impressions.

Protections that leave a trace

  • Voltage monitoring: the control checks the supplied voltage and protects the unit in case of a voltage drop or another electrical anomaly.
  • High and low pressure switches and temperatures monitored continuously, as are the high temperature limits when an electric heat kit is installed.
  • Three-trip rule: the same safety has to trip three times within two hours before the compressor is locked out, which avoids service calls for an isolated trip.
  • Anti-short-cycle delay and programmable minimum run times to spare the compressor, with a temporary bypass button during testing.
  • Programmable fan delays, independent in heating and in cooling.
  • Cooling possible down to 40 °F (4 °C) outdoors with no additional component, with the option of locking out the compressor in cold weather or when free cooling is available.

Linking the unit to your building management system

The control works with a conventional thermostat wired to screw terminals, with a zone sensor, or in communication with a building management system. The YORK nomenclature confirms that this model is fitted with the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus and N2 communication card. Your operating data can then travel up to the management station already in place, rather than staying on the roof. The code also provides for the refrigerant detection system (RDS), tied to the control, which starts a dilution sequence and an alarm in case of a leak.

One cabinet, one place to watch

A packaged heat pump houses the whole system in an outdoor cabinet installed on the roof or at ground level: compressor, coils, fan, filters, control and backup heating elements. The building's duct system connects to it directly, on the supply as on the return. For a manager, this layout simplifies the follow-up: no indoor unit in a ceiling or a service room, and a single piece of equipment to inspect in order to understand how the system behaves.

Field-installed backup heat Kits of 6.5, 10.5 or 16 kW at 230 V

For this configuration with no backup heat, YORK publishes a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 22.2 A at 208 V and 22.5 A at 230 V; the fuse or the breaker must not exceed 30 A. A heat kit drives these values up, and the nameplate remains the reference.

A cabinet built to last on the roof

The embossed top reinforces the structure and the rigidity of the cabinet, and the powder paint is rated 750 hours of salt spray. YORK tests and rates its units to cool up to 125 °F (52 °C) outdoor temperature. Its perimeter base rail fits many existing roof curbs, which makes replacing a unit at the end of its life easier.

A design that makes maintenance easier

The 2 in. filters (four 16 x 16 x 2 in. filters, MERV 4 from the factory) are replaced through an access panel without tools, and MERV 8 or MERV 13 filters can be installed if needed. The large access panels clear the blower and its components, while the direct-drive outdoor fan, fastened to the grille, makes quick maintenance easier. A port provided in the top panel makes it possible to read the circuit pressures without removing the compressor access panel. As a factory option, hinged doors avoid having to remove panels on the roof, and a 120 V service outlet with a ground fault circuit interrupter stays within the technician's reach. The scroll compressor, the filter drier, the thermostatic expansion valve and the copper and aluminum coils round out a proven package. YORK configures every unit and puts it through a run test at the factory.

Our follow-up after the installation

  1. Commissioning and keeping the start-up report produced by the control.
  2. Setting the fan delays and the parameters to your building's schedule.
  3. Testing the communication with your building management system, where applicable.
  4. Scheduled maintenance visits, with filter replacement, belt check and review of the fault history.
