For 575 V buildings moving to R-454B

Warehouse, shop, distribution centre or commercial building: when the electrical service is 575 V three-phase, the rooftop unit has to be built for that voltage. This 5-ton YORK Sun Core packaged heat pump (60,000 BTU/h nominal), model WQE06A5C1AA5G111A1, answers that with R-454B and three factory-mounted options: a dry-bulb economizer, a belt-driven high static pressure blower and a refrigerant detection system (RDS). AirGreen sells and installs it in the commercial and industrial buildings of Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

In the Sun Core line, the WQE is the standard-efficiency unit, below the high-efficiency WYE. Its R-454B is an A2L refrigerant with a low global warming potential; the electric backup heat is installed on site.

What the model number tells you

  • code 5 (voltage): 575 V, three-phase, 60 Hz;
  • code C (airflow): high static pressure, belt drive, an option reserved for three-phase models;
  • code 5 (sensors): factory-installed RDS;
  • code G (economizer): dry bulb, the "enhanced static" version;
  • code A (control): Smart Equipment, with a thermostat or a zone sensor.

The BACnet MS/TP, Modbus and N2 card (code B) is not included: if your building has a central management system, we confirm this point before ordering.

The dry-bulb economizer, mounted and wired at the factory

The economizer uses outdoor air to cool the rooms as soon as the outdoor temperature is below the set point of its module: that is the principle of dry-bulb control, useful when the lighting, the machines and the occupants warm the space in cool weather.

This downflow module, with barometric relief, arrives installed and wired; all that is left is to assemble the outdoor air hood supplied and fasten it to the unit. Its opposed galvanized steel blades, gear-driven, and its spring-return modulating actuators let it take in up to 100% outdoor air, even while the compressor is running. Its Class 1A low-leakage dampers, licensed to AMCA 511, reach a leakage rate of 3 CFM per square foot at 1 in. of static pressure.

The Smart Equipment control integrates it, accepts a CO₂ sensor and is ready for demand-controlled ventilation. A 575 V powered exhaust (kit 2PE04704258) can be added to it; it starts when the dampers pass an adjustable opening threshold.

A belt-drive blower for demanding duct systems

Long ducts, filters with a higher MERV rating, an economizer: each element adds resistance to the air path. The high static pressure option on the WQE06 answers that with a 2.9 HP three-phase motor, an adjustable 1VL44 drive pulley and an 11 x 10 in. centrifugal blower.

Its speed range runs from 1,167 to 1,593 rpm, against 792 to 1,208 rpm for the medium static pressure option. With a bottom connection, the YORK tables give 1,253 rpm for 1,500 CFM at an available external static pressure of 1.6 in. of water column, a speed out of reach for the medium option. YORK asks that the resistance of the economizer and, where applicable, of the heat kit be subtracted from it: so we measure the real pressure of your ducts before setting the pulley.

A single outdoor cabinet, watched over by the RDS

A packaged heat pump brings together the scroll compressor, copper and aluminum coils, blower, filters, control and economizer in one outdoor cabinet, set on the roof or at grade and tied into the ducts. Assembled at the factory, where every unit is configured and run-tested, the R-454B circuit stays outside the occupied rooms, inside that cabinet.

R-454B belongs to Class A2L, that of the refrigerants with low toxicity and low flammability. The built-in sensors of the refrigerant detection system are placed to detect a leak in the cabinet accurately and quickly. Tied to the control, the RDS automatically starts a refrigerant dilution sequence and raises an alarm as soon as the concentration reaches 25% of the lower flammability limit. No detection kit has to be added.

R-454B or R-410A: the comparison with the 575 V XQE06

We also offer the XQE06 on R-410A in 575 V: the same 48.9 x 74.1 x 40.6 in. cabinet, the same 627 lb weight and the same 77.8 dBA sound rating.

Figure WQE06 (R-454B) XQE06 (R-410A)
Net cooling 57,000 BTU/h 57,400 BTU/h
Heating at 47 °F (8.3 °C) 53,000 BTU/h 54,500 BTU/h
Heating at 17 °F (-8.3 °C) 29,000 BTU/h 30,600 BTU/h
SEER2, HSPF2 and EER2 14.0, 6.7 and 11.8 13.4, 6.7 and 11.9

The XQE06 delivers a little more capacity; the WQE06 gets the better SEER2, with an equal HSPF2 and an almost equal EER2. R-410A is a previous-generation refrigerant with proven technology; on the WQE06, the R-454B is watched by a factory-installed RDS. We compare the two with you.

575 V electrical work and backup heat

Two electric heat kits are installed on site in 575 V: 13.8 kW (2EK04511458) and 23 kW (2EK04512358), hardware and connectors included. Here are the YORK values for this high static pressure blower configuration, with no powered convenience outlet (MCA: minimum circuit ampacity).

Backup heat MCA Maximum fuse or breaker MCA with powered exhaust
None 10.2 A 15 A 10.6 A
13.8 kW kit 26.8 A 30 A 27.2 A
23 kW kit 37.8 A 40 A 38.2 A

The maximum rating (dual-element time-delay fuse or HACR-type breaker) stays the same with the exhaust. With no factory disconnect, we install an external disconnect sized from the nameplate. The through-the-base electrical entry kit (1TB0403) avoids a new roof penetration.

Preparing the roof and the site

Since the factory economizer is downflow, the return air connects from below, ideally on a 14 or 24 in. YORK roof curb (1RC0456 or 1RC0458), with insulated decks, where the ducts are fastened before the unit is set in place.

With an economizer, YORK requires 36 in. of clearance at the back and prohibits any discharge of combustion products within 10 ft. of that back: so we locate chimneys and vents before settling the location, then plan the crane around the unit's 640 lb shipping weight.
