Better filtered and better renewed air for your business or your clinic

In a clinic waiting room, a boutique with fitting rooms or a busy retail store, comfort is not limited to temperature. You also have to filter the air, bring in fresh air and protect the occupants. Model WQE06A2B1AB5A111A1, a 5 ton YORK Sun Core packaged heat pump (60,000 BTU/h nominal) on 208/230 V three-phase, lends itself well to these uses thanks to its upgradable filtration and to the economizers and safety options offered by YORK. Our crews install it in Montreal, in Laval and in Longueuil, as well as on the North Shore and the South Shore, in businesses as much as in clinics.

Part of the WQE series, the standard efficiency version of the Sun Core line, this unit uses R-454B, an A2L refrigerant whose global warming potential is low. Its electric backup heat is added in the field.

Filtration: from MERV 4 to MERV 13 in the same filter rack

The unit takes four 16 x 16 x 2 in. filters. It ships with MERV 4 disposable filters, and YORK provides for adding MERV 8 or MERV 13 filters through the filter access panel, which opens without tools, in particular to meet LEED requirements. A filter with a higher MERV rating holds back more fine particles, but it adds resistance to the passage of the air: we take that into account when we set the fan. According to the YORK nomenclature, this model is equipped with the medium static pressure option, that is a belt-driven centrifugal fan with a 2.4 HP three-phase motor and an adjustable motor sheave.

The economizer: outdoor air up to 100%

An economizer brings in outdoor air to ventilate the space and, when conditions allow, to cool it without putting the compressor to work. For this model, the economizer is installed in the field, in vertical flow (kit 2EE04711424) or horizontal flow (kit 2EE04707124 for the tall cabinet). Here is what the YORK guide says about it:

  • low-leakage AMCA 511 class 1A dampers, that is 3 CFM per square foot at 1 in. of static pressure;
  • 60,000 cycle endurance test for every economizer;
  • dry bulb temperature control as standard, with single (2EC0401) or dual (2EC0402) enthalpy kits;
  • fully modulating, spring-return actuators, able to bring in up to 100% outdoor air;
  • full integration with the Smart Equipment control and a power exhaust offered to go with it.

For simpler ventilation, YORK also offers manual outdoor air dampers from 0 to 35% or from 0 to 100%, as well as a motorized damper from 0 to 100%. One point worth knowing at the design stage: the pressure drop across the economizer is greater at 100% outdoor air than at 100% return air, and if the return duct resistance is below 0.25 in. of water column, the unit will deliver less airflow in full economizer mode.

Demand ventilation and integrated control

The Smart Equipment control includes the economizer controller. According to YORK's specifications, it accepts a CO₂ sensor in the occupied space and it is ready for demand ventilation, which allows the fresh air supply to be matched to the actual traffic in the space. It can also lock out the compressor when free cooling is available. Supply, return and outdoor air temperature sensors are installed at the factory, and the LCD screen shows these readings as well as the fault codes. According to its nomenclature, this model includes the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus and N2 communication card; a factory configuration without this card carries the number WQE06A2B1AA5A111A1.

Occupant safety and protection of the unit

  • Smoke detectors: offered for the supply air, the return air or both, they cut power to the unit and send a fault message to the control when they detect smoke.
  • Refrigerant detection system (RDS) included according to the nomenclature: in the event of a leak, it triggers a dilution sequence and an alarm.
  • Non-fused disconnect of 60 A or 100 A as a factory option; the model shown does not include one, and we then plan for an external disconnect of the appropriate rating.
  • Louvered hail guard (kit 1HG0420) to protect the outdoor coil fins.
  • Internally sloped condensate pan, made of a non-corrosive material and compliant with ASHRAE 62.

The packaged unit, a single air path to manage

The principle is simple: the entire unit fits in an outdoor cabinet, installed on the roof or at ground level and connected to the building's ducts. The return air is filtered, cooled or heated there, then sent back by the fan to the supply ducts. The economizer mounts on the same cabinet, as does the power exhaust in the vertical configuration. The whole air path is therefore managed in one place, which simplifies filter maintenance and the ventilation settings.

The refrigeration side includes a single scroll compressor with protection against liquid-induced damage, a thermostatic expansion valve, a filter-drier and high and low pressure switches. The coils combine copper tubes and aluminum fins, and the cabinet's powder-coat finish is rated 750 hours in the salt spray test. A retail store sometimes has to be cooled as early as spring: the control allows cooling down to 40 °F (4 °C) outdoors with no additional component, and the economizer takes over with outdoor air when conditions allow.

Planning the installation in a space open to the public

  1. Site visit, load calculation and assessment of the fresh air needs based on occupancy.
  2. Choice of the filtration level, the economizer and the smoke detectors.
  3. Check of the return ducts and adjustment of the fan for the target airflow.
  4. Respect of the 36 in. rear clearance required with an economizer or a power exhaust.
  5. Lifting and installation scheduled outside busy hours, then commissioning.
