Packaged Heat Pump System York WYE 5 Ton Three-Phase | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore and North Shore
When the electricity bill matters: the 5 ton high-efficiency version
If you are the one paying the electricity for your business or your building, the purchase price of a rooftop unit is only part of the calculation. The unit will run for many years, in cooling as well as in heating, and a gain in efficiency carries over to every hour it operates. Model WYE06A2B1AB5A111A1 is the high-efficiency version of the 5 ton YORK Sun Core packaged heat pump (60,000 BTU/h nominal), in 208/230 V three-phase and on R-454B refrigerant. AirGreen helps you compare it with the standard WQE06 version before you decide, for buildings in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.
WYE06 and WQE06 side by side
Both models share the same cabinet and the same design. Here are their main figures, taken from the YORK technical guide:
| Specification | WYE06 (high efficiency) | WQE06 (standard efficiency) |
|---|---|---|
| AHRI net cooling | 59,000 BTU/h | 57,000 BTU/h |
| Heating at 47 °F (8.3 °C) | 56,000 BTU/h | 53,000 BTU/h |
| COP at 47 °F | 3.6 | 3.5 |
| Heating at 17 °F (-8.3 °C) | 30,000 BTU/h | 29,000 BTU/h |
| COP at 17 °F | 2.2 | 2.15 |
| SEER2 | 14.3 | 14.0 |
| HSPF2 | 6.9 | 6.7 |
| EER2 | 12.0 | 11.8 |
| Power input in cooling (AHRI rating) | 4.9 kW | 4.8 kW |
| Power input in heating at 47 °F | 4.5 kW | 4.4 kW |
| Power input in heating at 17 °F | 4.1 kW | 3.9 kW |
| Nominal airflow | 1,650 CFM | 1,550 CFM |
| Minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) at 208 V, without backup heat | 29 A | 25.4 A |
| Outdoor sound level (AHRI 270) | 80.0 dBA | 77.8 dBA |
| Operating weight | 653 lb | 627 lb |
The MCA values correspond to the medium static pressure configuration of both models, without a powered convenience outlet.
How to read these ratings
- SEER2: seasonal cooling efficiency, that is the heat removed per unit of electricity consumed over a typical season.
- EER2: cooling efficiency at full load, measured at a high, fixed outdoor temperature; useful for judging performance in hot weather.
- HSPF2: seasonal heating efficiency, calculated over a typical heating season.
- COP: the instantaneous ratio between the heat delivered and the electricity consumed at a given outdoor temperature. At 47 °F (8.3 °C), a COP of 3.6 means 3.6 units of heat for every unit of electricity.
What the comparison shows
The WYE06 draws a little more at full load, but it also delivers more capacity in cooling and in heating. Efficiency is measured by the ratio between those two values, and the high-efficiency version earns a better rating on every count: SEER2, EER2, HSPF2 and COP. The advantage holds in cold weather: at 17 °F (-8.3 °C), it delivers 30,000 BTU/h with a COP of 2.2. When the backup heat is called on, every extra BTU delivered by the heat pump cuts back its contribution by that much, and those electric elements only turn electricity into heat.
The comparison also shows three points to plan for: a slightly larger electrical circuit, 26 lb more on the roof and a higher sound rating. We take them into account, especially when the unit sits close to windows or to neighbouring dwellings. The real difference on your bill depends on your operating hours, your rate and the load of your building; we therefore assess it from your own situation rather than with a generic percentage.
When the high-efficiency version is worth it
- The space is occupied long hours, every day, in cooling as well as in heating.
- The owner pays for the electricity directly and is keeping the building for the long term.
- The heat pump carries a large share of the heating, which brings its COP of 3.6 and 2.2 into play.
For a space occupied few hours, or when the purchase budget comes first, the WQE06 can be enough. We compare both options with you, figures in hand.
The settings that count as much as the rating
An oversized unit starts and stops more often, which wastes part of its efficiency. We therefore begin with a load calculation. According to the YORK nomenclature, this model carries the medium static pressure option: a belt-driven fan, a 2.4 HP three-phase motor and an adjustable drive pulley, which we set to the target airflow after measuring the static pressure of your ducts.
Thanks to the energy consumption tracking built into the Smart Equipment control, operation can be matched to the real schedule and occupancy of the building. The control can also lock out the compressor when free cooling is available with an economizer, and its fan delays are programmed separately in heating and in cooling. The LCD display, the USB port and, depending on the model code, the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus and N2 communication card make monitoring easier. Finally, regular maintenance of the filters and the coils helps the unit keep its original performance.
A packaged unit assembled and tested at the factory
In a packaged heat pump, compressor, coils, fan and control share a single outdoor cabinet, installed on the roof or on the ground and connected to the supply and return ducts. The refrigerant circuit is not joined in the field between two units: it is assembled at the factory, and every unit is configured and run-tested before delivery. The single scroll compressor, designed with fewer moving parts, contributes to a quiet, reliable, easy-to-service and efficient system.

Same dimensions, same roof curb
Choosing high efficiency does not complicate the installation. The WYE06 has the same dimensions as the WQE06 and uses the same 14 in. or 24 in. YORK roof curbs, the same hail guard and the same economizers. It also sits on a good number of existing roof curbs thanks to its full perimeter base rail. You find the construction shared across the line: thermostatic expansion valve, filter drier, high and low pressure switches, copper and aluminum coils, embossed top and powder paint rated for 750 hours of salt spray, all rated to cool up to 125 °F (52 °C).
