From the plant's 575 V to office comfort, with no transformer and no new refrigerant

If your industrial building is fed at 575 V three-phase and its rooftop units run on R-410A, the unit meant for the cafeteria, the offices or the control room should respect both of those choices rather than call for a transformer or a second refrigerant. The YORK Sunline XN048 packaged heat pump (4 tons, 48,000 BTU/h nominal) is built for 575 V, delivered with a factory economizer and charged with R-410A. AirGreen, a Montreal HVAC contractor, installs it on industrial roofs in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

The mechanical side stays outside, the occupied rooms stay clear

A packaged heat pump houses its scroll compressor, its coils, its fans, its filters and its control in a single outdoor cabinet, set on the roof or on a pad at grade; only the ducts enter the rooms it serves. For a control room or a cafeteria, maintenance happens up there, without disturbing the operators or the employees on break. Every unit leaves the factory charged, wired and tested.

No transformer between the 575 V panel and the unit

The XN048C00B5C1AAA1A2 unit leaves the factory ready for a 575 V, three-phase, 60 Hz supply: no step-down transformer is required. According to the YORK guide, the applied voltage can range from 540 to 630 V. Here are the circuit figures:

Backup heat MCA Maximum protection
None, as delivered 9 A 15 A
E10 kit (10.6 kW) 21.8 A 25 A
E15 kit (15.9 kW) 28.1 A 30 A
E20 kit (21.2 kW) 34.5 A 35 A

MCA stands for the minimum circuit ampacity, protected by a dual-element time-delay fuse or by an HACR-type breaker. At 575 V, the indoor fan is always belt-driven, direct drive being reserved for the 208/230 V models; its adjustable-pitch pulley allows the airflow to be matched to the duct system.

Staying with R-410A, with no break for the maintenance team

The unit uses R-410A, a previous-generation refrigerant whose technology is proven. If your other units run on it as well, your technicians keep a single refrigerant and their usual procedures. Placed on the suction line, a freeze-protection thermostat guards the unit against a loss of refrigerant and keeps the coil from icing up when the economizer sends in cool air while the compressor is running.

A single footprint for the ZE and XN series from 3 to 6 tons

YORK uses one cabinet for every ZE and XN size and configuration from 3 to 6 tons: the same roof curb, 8 or 14 in. high, takes them all. We can therefore set the curb during the roofing work and settle the size of the unit and its heat option later, once the internal loads are worked out: the control room screens, the cafeteria occupancy, the kitchen appliances. An XN of 3, 4 or 5 tons will take the same space.

The factory economizer, an asset for staff rooms

Installed and wired at the factory, the economizer brings in up to 100% fresh air as soon as the outdoor dry-bulb temperature drops below its set point. A control room full of screens or a cafeteria packed at noon then gets free cooling in spring and in fall; the control can lock out the compressor.

With no factory barometric relief damper, the air brought in has to find a way out: YORK offers that damper as an accessory, or a 575-3-60 powered exhaust for bottom-connected ducts. For the cafeteria, a CO2 sensor offered as an accessory takes over the economizer when the concentration rises above the preset limits.

Control room: operator comfort or equipment cooling

The Smart Equipment control includes a low-ambient function: with no accessory, the unit can cool at an outdoor temperature as low as 0 °F (-17.8 °C) when it serves human comfort. Cooling electrical gear or servers in the middle of winter is closer to process cooling. YORK then recommends calling on its applications department, because stable operation below 30 °F (-1.1 °C) may require additional accessories. We check this point before confirming the selection.

Winter heat: a backup kit chosen to suit your rooms

At 17 °F (-8.3 °C), the heat pump still delivers 24,900 BTU/h. For colder days, an E10, E15 or E20 electric heat kit is installed on site. Its nickel-chrome elements are protected by auto-reset limit switches; for maintenance, the whole heating section slides out of the unit. With a kit, the airflow has to reach at least 1,200 CFM. We choose it from the heat losses of each room.

Smart Equipment, set to your schedules

Delivered in the stand-alone version, the Smart Equipment control is driven by a conventional thermostat or by a zone sensor; the BACnet MS/TP communication card is a factory option this model does not carry. One point to remember for fixed schedules: a factory-installed jumper between the R and OCC terminals of the control board forces occupied mode, whatever the thermostat or the energy management system calls for. We remove it at commissioning when those devices are meant to manage occupancy.

Our checklist before the lift

  1. 575 V circuit: wiring and protection from the YORK tables; disconnect on the bracket provided; supply through the 2 in. knockout, on the side or underneath.
  2. Structure and lift: 616 lb in operation for the base unit, plus 50 lb for the economizer; the crane slings pass through the corner holes in the rails.
  3. Clearances with the economizer: 36 in. at the back and on the left, 24 in. at the front and on the right, 72 in. above.
  4. Ducts: from below or from the back, even with the economizer; a low-resistance return, under 0.25 in. of water column, drops the airflow in full economizer mode.
