Packaged Heat Pump System York XN 5 Ton Three-Phase | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore and North Shore
Five tons of comfort for a large space in 208/230 V three-phase
A showroom, a retail store or an open-plan office needs a lot of air, well distributed, in summer as in winter. The 5 ton YORK Sunline XN packaged heat pump (60,000 BTU/h nominal) meets that need with a nominal airflow of 1,850 CFM and a 208/230 V three-phase supply, common in commercial buildings. AirGreen, an HVAC contractor in Montreal, installs it on roofs in Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

The XN series is rated under the former SEER and HSPF standard. The YORK technical guide does not publish SEER2 or HSPF2 ratings for these models.
A large volume of air, at two speeds
In a large space, airflow counts as much as tonnage. For the XN060, the YORK guide publishes separate capacity tables for a low speed and a high speed, with a nominal airflow of 1,275 CFM at low speed and 1,850 CFM at high speed. The double-inlet centrifugal indoor blower is dynamically balanced and mounted on sealed bearings, lubricated for life. Its belt drive includes an adjustable-pitch drive pulley, which lets us match the speed to the duct system.
A two-speed outdoor fan
The 5 ton model is the only one in the XN series whose outdoor fan has two speeds: 850 and 1,100 rpm, for an airflow of 2,800 or 3,800 CFM through the outdoor coil. This 24 in. direct-drive propeller fan discharges the air vertically. Its aluminum blades are riveted to a corrosion-resistant steel support and dynamically balanced, and its enclosed motor is protected against overloads.
Side or bottom connection
Every XN model, including those fitted with an economizer, connects from the bottom or horizontally. For a bottom connection, we remove the sheet metal panels that close the supply and return openings in the base of the unit. For a side connection, which YORK calls horizontal, we remove the supply and return panels at the back of the unit. The bottom connection suits ducts that pass through the roof inside the base. The horizontal connection is used when the ducts come in through a wall, for example when the unit sits on a pad on the ground.
The power wiring enters at a single point, from the side or from underneath, through a 2 in. knockout. The control wiring has its own 7/8 in. openings, also on the side and under the unit. Fewer penetrations in the roof means less risk of a leak.
Two factory configurations offered
- XN060C00B2C1AAA1A2: standard static pressure belt-driven blower, economizer without a barometric relief damper, no service option, no optional sensor, stand-alone Smart Equipment control and standard coils.
- XN060C00D2A1AAA1A2: high static pressure blower, no economizer, with the same choices for the service options, the sensors, the control and the coils.
Both versions ship without factory-installed electric heat (code C00). The high static pressure version suits long or restrictive duct systems. The version with an economizer brings in up to 100% outdoor air when it is cool enough to cool without the compressor. We recommend one or the other after measuring the static pressure of your ducts.
The packaged principle applied to large floor areas
In a packaged unit, the scroll compressor, both coils, the fans, the filters and the control share a single outdoor cabinet. Installed on the roof or on the ground, it connects to the building's ducts. No indoor mechanical room is required, which leaves the whole floor area for your operations. In winter, the heat pump reverses its cycle to heat. Every XN unit goes through automated factory tests of the refrigerant charge, the pressures, the current draw and all of its functions.
Backup heat and electrical supply
The XN060 delivers 51,500 BTU/h of heating at 47 °F (8.3 °C) and 30,000 BTU/h at 17 °F (-8.3 °C). In deep cold, electric backup heat supplements the heat pump. For this model in 208/230 V, the YORK guide lists the E05 through E30 kits. The largest delivers 22.2 kW at 208 V and 29.6 kW at 230 V: the building's actual voltage therefore counts in the choice of kit.
Without electric heat, the standard static pressure configuration calls for a circuit of at least 27.7 A (MCA) protected at 35 A maximum. The voltage range the unit accepts runs from 187 to 252 V. We confirm these values according to the kit selected, before ordering.
Control, protections and maintenance
The Smart Equipment control, standard on XN heat pumps, works with a conventional thermostat or a zone sensor. Its fan delays are programmable, with separate settings for heating and cooling. Freeze thermostats on the suction line protect against loss of charge and coil frosting when the economizer runs in cool weather while the compressor is turning. The compressor has internal protection, and the high and low pressure switches are monitored individually.
For maintenance, the large cabinet panels come off easily. The condensate pan, sloped inward, is designed to drain on its own in line with the ASHRAE 62 standard. Finally, the galvanized steel cabinet carries a powder paint finish that passed the 750-hour salt spray test.
Installation advice for a large space
- Load calculation: glazing, occupancy and internal gains decide whether 5 tons is enough.
- Measurement of the duct static pressure, to choose between the standard version and the high static pressure version.
- Roof curb: YORK offers 8 in. and 14 in. curbs that meet NRCA requirements, shipped knocked down, with a wood nailer strip and duct supports.
- Clearances: 24 in. at the front, 24 in. on the right side and 72 in. above. At the back, 36 in. with an economizer or 12 in. without an economizer. On the left side, 36 in. with an economizer or 24 in. without.
- Crane lifting thanks to the lifting holes at the four corners of the base rails.
