If your building already gets its fresh air from an air exchanger or from a separate ventilation system, the rooftop unit does not have to take care of it: its job comes down to cooling and heating the return air. That is the mandate of the 10 ton YORK Sun Pro XP model, a packaged heat pump fed by 208/230 V three-phase and delivered in its base configuration: no economizer, an IntelliSpeed drive, a high static pressure fan and two stages of cooling. An economizer or an outdoor air damper can be added later, as an accessory. AirGreen takes care of the supply, the installation and the maintenance in the greater Montreal area, including Laval and Longueuil as well as the North Shore and the South Shore.

Two units, two clearly separate roles

In a packaged unit, no mechanical component is installed inside the building: the two compressors, the two coils, the supply fan and the control board sit in a single outdoor cabinet, installed on the roof on a curb, at grade on a pad or on a frame, then connected to the ducts. In summer, the unit cools; in cold weather, it heats by reversing its cycle, with electric backup heat offered as an accessory. Where the ventilation is independent, the split is simple: the air exchanger renews the air, the packaged unit cools it or heats it. With no economizer, there is no outdoor air damper or actuator to inspect on the roof.

A fan for demanding duct systems, two stages for a variable load

The supply fan, a belt-driven 15 x 15 in. double-inlet centrifugal wheel, receives the high static pressure drive: YORK pairs it with a 3 HP motor and a variable-pitch drive sheave that allows the speed to be set between 880 and 1,110 rpm. That choice suits duct systems that impose a higher static pressure, such as long duct runs or runs loaded with accessories. External measurement ports make it possible to check the fan performance without opening a panel.

Each scroll compressor has its own refrigeration circuit: only one runs when demand is moderate, both when it rises. The IntelliSpeed drive then varies the fan speed with the compressors or the heating stages that are active. The 11.0 EER corresponds to full-load operation; the 14.5 IEER weighs performance at several load levels.

Adding outdoor air later: the accessories YORK provides for

The YORK guide provides for these field-installed accessories:

• Economizer 2EE04717625 (50 in. cabinet), for bottom supply or horizontal end return: hoods and barometric relief included, low-leakage dampers meeting AMCA 511 Class 1A, up to 100% outdoor air.
• Horizontal economizer for side return (2EE04706924), with barometric relief ordered separately and mounted in the ducts.
• Motorized damper (2MD04703824 bottom, 2MD04703924 horizontal), which opens to its preset position, between 0 and 100%, as soon as the indoor fan starts.
• Manual bottom damper, from 0 to 35% (1FA0413) or from 0 to 100% (1FA0414), with hood and filters.

The economizer adds 85 lb in operation, and its static resistance is subtracted from the pressure available at the fan: we take it into account as soon as we set the drive. Once the economizer is installed, its minimum position can follow the drive frequency. Until then, a zone that calls for cooling in winter is served by the compressors, which the low-ambient control lets run down to 0 °F (-17.8 °C) outdoors, for the comfort of the occupants.

208/230 V connection: currents and backup heat kits

Your electrician will take two values from the guide, the same at 208 V and at 230 V: a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 47.6 A and a protection of 60 A at most, by means of a dual-element time-delay fuse or an HACR breaker. They apply to the unit as delivered: high static pressure motor, no powered convenience outlet, no electric heat. Adding a power exhaust with the economizer brings the MCA to 53.1 A, the protection staying at 60 A.

With the E54, the fan has to go beyond the nominal 3,300 CFM, and the choice of kit follows the heat loss of the building.

What your technician finds when opening the unit

The Smart Equipment board accepts a 24 V thermostat with two stages of heating and cooling, with or without an economizer, or a zone sensor. Its USB port gives access to the fault history and the start-up reports. The board only locks out a compressor on the third trip of the same safety within two hours.

The access panels open without tools, the four disposable filters measure 24 x 20 x 2 in., and the composite condensate pan slides out the back of the unit.

On the roof: loads, curb and clearances

• Loads of 209 to 369 lb at the four support points, to be passed on to the structural engineer.
• YORK roof curbs available in 8 and 14 in. heights, with insulated deck; 10 in. transition adapter for the curb of an older Sunline (7.5 to 12.5 ton models).
• Clear space of 12 in. on the right, 36 in. on the three other sides and 72 in. above.
