A supermarket with doors opening non-stop, a reception hall that goes from empty to full in one evening, a gym where classes follow one after the other, a big-box store with endless aisles: these buildings call for a lot of capacity and a lot of air. The YORK Sun Pro XP150 packaged heat pump, fed by 208/230 V three-phase, is the largest model in a series that runs from 6.5 to 12.5 tons, with a longer cabinet, four condenser fans and a rated airflow of 4,600 CFM. A single cabinet on the roof, a clear sales floor
A packaged heat pump houses the controls, the compressors, the coils and the fans in a single outdoor cabinet. The unit sits on a roof curb, a pad or a frame, then connects to the duct system, on the supply side and the return side; it cools in summer and heats the rest of the year. No mechanical room to plan for, nothing in the sales floor or in the drop ceiling, and maintenance carried out on the roof, without closing an aisle or moving a banquet. Every XP150 leaves the factory wired, tested and charged with R-410A, the proven refrigerant of the previous generation.

EER, IEER and two stages: reading the efficiency of a 12.5 ton unit
You will find neither SEER nor HSPF on the data sheet of this model: from 6 tons up, a unit is compared in EER and in IEER. The 10.6 EER measures full-load performance; the 14.5 IEER, obtained with the IntelliSpeed drive, weighs performance at part load. That is where the two scroll compressors come in, delivering 50% and then 100% of the capacity: in a supermarket, the first one can be enough on a Tuesday morning, and the second starts on Saturday afternoon, when the lines at the checkouts get longer. The drive then sets the blower speed according to the number of active compressors.
A longer cabinet, four fans and a 5 HP motor
Where the 6.5 to 10 ton models measure 89 in., the XP150 stretches to 119-7/16 in. That length holds a condenser coil of 47.5 ft² (29.0 ft² on the other sizes) and four 24 in. fans with direct drive instead of two, moving 14,000 CFM. Inside the cabinet, a 5 HP motor (184T frame), fitted with an adjustable-pitch sheave, belt-drives a 15 x 15 in. double-inlet centrifugal wheel; motor and wheel form a slide-out assembly. The tables in the guide cover external static pressures from 0.2 to 2.0 in. of water column, useful for long duct systems.
Decoding the model number
According to the YORK nomenclature, this number designates a 208/230 V three-phase unit whose high static pressure drive is controlled by the IntelliSpeed drive, with an economizer with barometric relief damper, a phase monitor, a Smart Equipment control in stand-alone mode, 2 in. disposable filters, standard coils and cabinet. Fitted with low-leakage AMCA 511 Class 1A dampers, the economizer admits up to 100% outdoor air and takes over from the compressors as soon as the outdoor air allows it. The unit is delivered with no service option (disconnect, convenience outlet) and with no electric heat.
Electric heat kits and ampacity: sizing the three-phase service
In heat pump mode, the XP150 delivers 138,000 BTU/h at 47 °F and 82,000 BTU/h at 17 °F. When the cold gets sharper, YORK offers for this size electric heat kits in four sizes, namely 18, 24, 36 and 54 kW, two-stage and with single-point power. Without electric heat, the YORK tables drawn up for the high static pressure motor, in the version without a powered convenience outlet, give an MCA (minimum circuit ampacity) of 78.4 A and a protection of 100 A at most. With the 54 kW kit, the MCA reaches 166.9 A at 208 V and 180.7 A at 230 V. The voltage counts too: this kit delivers 54 kW at 230 V, but 40.6 kW at 208 V.
Smart Equipment and phase monitor: a hard-working unit, closely watched
The Smart Equipment board receives its temperature sensors at the factory (supply air, return air, outdoor air). Its LCD screen displays the fault codes, whose history the USB port keeps. The board also protects the unit during a voltage drop, while the phase monitor shuts it down if it detects a missing phase or a reversed rotation, two risks specific to three-phase power. Three safety trips in less than two hours lock out only the associated compressor. Finally, the built-in low-ambient control allows cooling down to 0 °F (-17.8 °C) outdoors, in a comfort application and with no additional component: useful when a hall full of guests warms the air well before spring.
Crane, roof curb and connections: preparing the job site
- Structure: 1,403 lb in operation for the base unit, plus 85 lb for the economizer according to the accessories table. The guide also gives the load per support point and the centre of gravity, useful to the structural engineer.
- Lifting: the rails that run around the base are drilled with lifting holes for the crane slings and accept the forks of a forklift on three sides; the lift is preferably planned outside business hours.
- Roof curb: YORK offers curbs with insulated deck, 8 or 14 in. high and shipped knocked down, as well as a 10 in. transition adapter intended for Sunline curbs from 7.5 to 12.5 tons only. Since the XP150 cabinet is longer, we confirm the exact curb with the distributor before ordering; it has to rise at least 8 in. above the finished roof.
- Clearances: 72 in. clear above the four fans, 12 in. on the right side, 36 in. for the front, the back and the left side.
- Connections: a single electrical entry, on the side or from below, and a disconnect to plan for in the field; the ducts connect underneath or on the side, with no panel cutting.
