Store or office on 208/230 V three-phase: 3 tons on R-410A in a 32.5 in. cabinet

If your store or your office needs about 3 tons of cooling, if the electrical service is 208/230 V three-phase and you prefer to stay on R-410A, the 3 ton YORK Sun Core XQE answers that profile. This packaged heat pump of 36,000 BTU/h nominal, rated 13.4 SEER2, sits in the short 32.5 in. cabinet and comes with a belt-driven medium static pressure blower. The factory configuration of the XQE04A2B1AA1A111A2 model stays simple: Smart Equipment control, standard coils, no economizer, no disconnect switch and no built-in heat. In the field we add only what your space requires.

The whole system outdoors, nothing on the sales floor

Compressor, coils, fans, filters and control share a single outdoor cabinet, installed on the roof or at ground level, then tied into the duct system. In summer, the unit cools; in winter, it heats in heat pump mode, with backup heat from an electric kit added in the field. Nothing encroaches on the sales floor or on the drop ceiling, and maintenance is done outside, without disturbing your customers.

Accessories specific to the 32.5 in. cabinet

On the same footprint, the 4 and 5 ton XQE reach 40.6 in. in height; the 3 ton version stops at 32.5 in., the lowest cabinet of this size. Behind a low parapet, it stays more discreet. This short cabinet has its own accessories:

• Hail guard 1HG0419: a louvred panel set in front of the outdoor coil to protect its fins from hail.
• Horizontal flow economizer 2EE04707024: for ducts connected from the side, since the unit can be converted in the field to a horizontal connection.
• Hinged panel 1HD0401 for filter access: the companion to that economizer.

Belt-driven blower: the margin it gives your ducts

On the 3 to 5 ton XQE, the base option is a direct-drive blower. The B in the eighth position of the model number stands instead for the medium static pressure option: a double-inlet centrifugal wheel, belted to a 2.4 HP three-phase motor. Set by its variable-pitch drive pulley (1VL34), the blower speed runs from 792 to 1,208 rpm.

According to the YORK tables, moving 1,200 CFM against 1.0 in. w.c. of external static pressure, in bottom connection, takes 1,191 rpm, which this option delivers. At the same pressure, the base direct-drive blower tops out at 872 CFM. In an office with long, elbowed ducts, that reserve helps hold the intended airflow; at start-up, we measure the pressure and set the pulley accordingly.

Smart Equipment in stand-alone mode and proven mechanics

Smart Equipment is supplied here without a communication card, which suits a space with no building management system. A 24 V thermostat or a zone sensor is enough to drive it, and its three air sensors are already fitted at the factory. A CO2 sensor can also be connected to it: combined with an economizer, it adjusts the fresh air intake to occupancy. Its low ambient function lets the unit cool even when it is only 40 °F (4.4 °C) outside, an advantage in spring, when computers and lighting warm up the offices.

The scroll compressor is mounted on rubber grommets and internally protected against overheating and overcurrent. The coils pair internally grooved copper tubes with aluminum fins, and the blower compartment is insulated with 1/2 in. fibreglass.

Same cabinet, two refrigerants: R-410A or R-454B

Here are the two versions of this 3 ton format:

The WQE04 posts a slightly higher SEER2 and EER2 and heats a little more at 17 °F; it uses R-454B, an A2L refrigerant with a low global warming potential, and the version offered includes a refrigerant detection system (RDS). The XQE04 stays on R-410A, a proven technology from the previous generation, and its rating under the previous standard makes the comparison with an older unit easier. If your other equipment runs on R-410A, the XQE04 is the obvious choice; if the climate impact of the refrigerant comes first, we will propose the WQE04.

The three-phase electrical service and the heat kits

For this configuration with no electric backup, the YORK guide gives an MCA (minimum circuit ampacity) of 20.2 A at 208 V and 20.5 A at 230 V; the maximum protection is 30 A (time-delay fuse or HACR breaker). Three heat kits are installed in the field:

• 2EK04510625: 6.5 kW at 230 V (4.9 kW at 208 V)
• 2EK04511125: 10.5 kW at 230 V (7.9 kW at 208 V)
• 2EK04511625: 16 kW at 230 V (12 kW at 208 V)

The 16 kW kit brings the MCA to 68.6 A at 230 V and the maximum protection to 70 A: we therefore check your panel first. The unit arrives without a factory disconnect switch; we install one, sized from the nameplate, and a bottom power entry kit brings the supply in without piercing the membrane anywhere else.

Before installation on a commercial roof

1. Survey the existing curb or plan a new 14 or 24 in. YORK curb, to which the ducts can be connected before the unit arrives.
2. Check the roof structure: the guide gives 127 to 137 lb at each corner of the unit.
3. Clear the space around the unit: 36 in. in front, 18 in. behind (36 in. with an economizer or a powered exhaust), 12 in. on the left, 18 in. on the right and 72 in. above for the air discharge.
4. Plan the crane lift: the lifting shackles hook directly to the unit's base rails.
