A 4 ton Sun Core unit that fits the roof curb already in place
Your business is fed with 208/230 V three-phase power and you are looking for a reliable rooftop unit to cool in summer and heat in winter. The 4 ton YORK Sun Core XQE (48,000 BTU/h nominal) is a packaged heat pump on R-410A, rated 13.4 SEER2, driven by the Smart Equipment control and built on a full-length base that fits many existing roof curbs. Designed for the replacement market
YORK designed the Sun Core line with the replacement market in mind: its perimeter base rail fits many roof curbs already in place. The rails, made of heavier steel, are shaped to stand up to transport and lifting. They surround the unit on four sides, with holes for lifting shackles and openings for the forklift.
Since compatibility depends on the existing curb, we always measure it during the estimate. If a new curb is preferable, YORK offers 14 or 24 in. curbs, shipped knocked down, with insulated decking and a wood nailer strip around the full perimeter. They carry the entire weight of the unit, and the ducts can be attached to them before the unit is set in place.
What "packaged" means for a business
In a packaged unit, the whole system sits in a single outdoor cabinet: scroll compressor, copper and aluminum coils, fans, filters and control. Nothing takes up your sales floor or your stockroom. The unit connects to the supply and return ducts and, thanks to the heat pump mode, it heats in winter and cools in summer.
Configured at the factory for bottom supply and return, it converts in the field to horizontal connections. A mixed arrangement is also possible: bottom supply and horizontal return, or the other way around. This flexibility helps reuse the existing ducts.

Smart Equipment: the control at the heart of the unit
The Smart Equipment control comes standard on the XQE. It works with a conventional 24 V thermostat, a zone sensor or, with the communication card offered as a factory option, a building management system on BACnet MS/TP, Modbus or N2. Three temperature sensors, installed at the factory, read supply air, return air and outdoor air.
The LCD display, with its navigation joystick, shows unit status, measured temperatures and alarms. The USB port allows data logging, review of current and previous faults, software updates and energy consumption tracking. The control also monitors the supply voltage and protects the unit in the event of a voltage drop. Finally, it applies a short-cycle delay and programmable fan delays, separate for heating and cooling.
Offered as a factory option or as an accessory, the fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) module continuously monitors the pressures and temperatures of the refrigerant circuit. It raises an alarm when the unit is not running at its best, and its data can be reached remotely through the Mobile Access Portal gateway.
Simple, rugged mechanics
On the 3 to 5 ton models, YORK uses a single refrigeration circuit and a single scroll compressor. The scroll has a simple internal design, with fewer moving parts, which makes it quiet, reliable and easy to service. The compressor is internally protected, in particular against liquid-induced damage. Each circuit includes a filter-drier and high and low pressure switches, while sensors on the suction line guard against liquid floodback, loss of charge and coil frosting.
The outdoor fan, dynamically balanced, contributes to the quieter operation of the unit. The embossed top adds rigidity to the cabinet, and the powder-coat finish withstands 750 hours of salt spray exposure. YORK tests and rates these units in cooling up to 125 °F (52 °C) outdoors. At the other end, the built-in low ambient control allows cooling down to 40 °F (4 °C) with no additional component.
Ventilation and air quality
The XQE comes with four 2 in. disposable filters (16 x 16 x 2 in.) rated MERV 4. MERV 8 or MERV 13 filters install easily through the filter access panel, which opens without tools. For fresh air, YORK offers economizers installed at the factory or in the field, able to bring in up to 100% outdoor air, along with manual adjustable dampers from 0 to 35% or from 0 to 100% and a motorized damper. The control accepts a CO2 sensor for ventilation based on occupancy.
Electric backup heat
The heat pump delivers 46,700 BTU/h at 47 °F (8.3 °C) and 26,400 BTU/h at 17 °F (-8.3 °C). For colder days, the electric heat for the XQE is installed in the field. On 208/230 V three-phase, the YORK guide offers 6.5, 10.5 and 16 kW kits at 230 V, which give 4.9, 7.9 and 12 kW respectively at 208 V. The required hardware and connectors are supplied with each kit. If you go with the non-fused disconnect offered from the factory (60 or 100 A), we check that it suits the kit you choose.
Points to settle before ordering
- Measure the existing roof curb and the position of the supply and return openings.
- Check the three-phase supply, which must stay between 187 and 252 V according to the YORK guide.
- Minimum clearances: 12 in. on the left and 18 in. on the right, 36 in. at the front, 72 in. clear above for air discharge, and 18 in. at the rear, raised to 36 in. with an economizer or a power exhaust.
- Consider the through-the-base electrical connection kit, which brings the power in without any additional roof penetration.
- Plan the crane lift using the holes provided in the base rails.
