A roof that is hard to reach: 5 tons built for quick maintenance
On many buildings, the roof is reached by a ladder and a hatch, and every service call has to be short and well prepared. The 5 ton YORK Sun Core XQE (60,000 BTU/h nominal) answers that reality: a packaged heat pump on R-410A, fed in 208/230 V three-phase, in a compact cabinet with wide service access and filters that change without a tool. When every trip to the roof counts
Limited access does not change what a rooftop unit needs in maintenance: filters, coils, belt, reading the pressures and checking the protections. It does change what each visit costs in time. Hence the value of a unit where everything sits in the same place and where the routine steps go quickly, without taking apart more than necessary.
A compact, small-footprint cabinet
The 5 ton XQE uses what the Sun Core line calls the small footprint cabinet: 48.9 in. wide, 74.1 in. long and 40.6 in. high, for an operating weight of 627 lb. The one-piece top panel is embossed to stiffen the cabinet. The base rails run around all four sides of the unit and are drilled to take lifting shackles and the forks of a lift truck. A single crane lift is enough to set it in place.
Service access that is wide and well thought out
- Large access panels: the indoor blower, rigidly mounted and dynamically balanced, is reached through wide panels that come off easily.
- Built-in handles: the panels of the control box, of the indoor blower, of its motor and of the compressor have handles in UV-treated composite, permanently fixed and recessed.
- Replaceable collars: the panel screws thread into heat-resistant composite collars that are easy to replace.
- Pressure readings: a port closed by a removable plug lets us connect the gauges and read the head pressure without removing the compressor panel.
- Outdoor fan: direct drive, mounted to the grille, it is quick to service.
- Hinged doors: offered as a factory option, they save removing the panels, and therefore misplacing them or damaging the roof covering.
Filters that change without a tool
The filter access panel, installed at the factory, opens without a tool. The four 2 in. disposable filters are all the same size, 16 x 16 x 2 in.: a single dimension to carry up to the roof. Supplied in MERV 4, they can give way to MERV 8 or MERV 13 filters, slid in through the same panel. If the unit receives a horizontal-flow economizer, YORK offers a hinged filter access panel designed for that configuration.
Diagnosing quickly, on site or remotely
The Smart Equipment control, standard, shows on its LCD display the operating status, the air temperatures (supply, return, outdoor) and the alarm codes. The last five codes are held in non-volatile memory, which a power failure does not erase. Through the USB port, the technician downloads the data log and the start-up reports. Before locking out the compressor, the control waits for three trips of the same protection within two hours, which cuts down on needless calls.
To limit the trips, two factory options deserve your attention: the BACnet MS/TP, Modbus or N2 communication card to link the unit to your building management system, and the FDD module, which monitors the refrigerant circuit and whose data can be consulted remotely through the Mobile Access Portal gateway.
Fewer unplanned visits
On a roof that is hard to reach, the best visit is the one you do not have to make. The scroll compressor of the XQE has a simple internal design and internal protection that shields it from liquid slugging. The control monitors the supply voltage and protects the unit during a voltage drop. Every unit goes through an automated run test on the assembly line, and YORK keeps the data from that test at the factory. The galvanized steel cabinet, finished with a powder paint proven through 750 hours of salt spray, is built to the UL 1995 standard, which includes a rain resistance test.

The packaged unit: a single machine to maintain
A packaged unit brings together in a single outdoor cabinet the scroll compressor, the indoor coil, the outdoor coil, the fans, the filters and the control, all connected to the building's ducts. For a roof that is hard to reach, that is a clear advantage: one visit covers the whole system, and no indoor unit is hidden in a ceiling. In the field, what is left is to connect the ducts, the power, the control wiring and the condensate drain (3/4 in. NPT fitting, from underneath or from the side of the pan).
Heating and electric backup
The heat pump delivers 54,500 BTU/h at 47 °F (8.3 °C) and 30,600 BTU/h at 17 °F (-8.3 °C). To top up the heat in very cold weather, YORK offers field-installed electric heat kits: 6.5, 10.5 or 16 kW at 230 V, that is 4.9, 7.9 or 12 kW at 208 V. We choose the kit according to the heat loss of the building.
Planning the lift and the clearances
- Book the crane and check the lift path over the building.
- Leave 36 in. at the front and 72 in. above the unit.
- Allow 18 in. on the right, 12 in. on the left and 18 in. at the back, or 36 in. with an economizer or a powered exhaust.
- Bring the power in through the base with the watertight connection kit, without an additional penetration in the roof.
- Consider the louvred hail guard, which protects the fins of the outdoor coil.
