Gym, big-box store or multipurpose hall: 10 tons for very large volumes
A gym packed on a tournament night, a big-box store with endless aisles, a multipurpose hall that hosts in turn a banquet, an assembly and a sports activity: these spaces call for a lot of air, well distributed, and a reliable installation from the first to the last day of the season. The 10 ton YORK Sun Core XXE packaged heat pump, supplied at 575 V three-phase, moves a nominal airflow of 3,600 CFM and splits its capacity between two independent refrigerant circuits. AirGreen sizes it, installs it and maintains it for owners and property managers in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore.
Two independent circuits, a safeguard for large volumes
Each of the two scroll compressors feeds its own refrigerant circuit, with its filter drier on the liquid line and its high and low pressure switches. The control board watches each safety device separately. If one of them trips three times in less than two hours, only the associated compressor is locked out and a fault message appears. For a gym or a hall where an event is planned, this architecture limits the effect of an isolated fault on the installation as a whole.
The two compressors also form two stages of cooling, at 50% and at 100% of the capacity. The EER of 11.0 describes the efficiency at full load, while the IEER of 14.6, obtained with the IntelliSpeed drive, takes part-load operation into account. Like the other units of 6 tons and more, this model is not rated in SEER.
3,600 CFM to distribute: high static pressure and IntelliSpeed
In a very large volume, the ducts are often long and the grilles many. This model is fitted with the high static pressure belt-drive indoor fan option, reserved for the three-phase models, with a motor of 5.25 BHP at most according to the guide. The IntelliSpeed drive varies the speed of the supply fan according to the number of compressors or heating stages running. The dry bulb economizer, with its AMCA 511 class 1A low-leakage dampers, can bring in up to 100% outdoor air, and the Smart Equipment control accepts a CO2 sensor in the space for ventilation based on occupancy, an advantage when the attendance of a hall swings widely.
The packaged principle, at the scale of large volumes
A packaged heat pump brings together in a single outdoor cabinet the compressors, the coils, the fans and the control. Installed on the roof or on a pad, it connects to the supply and return ducts, cools in summer and heats by heat pump the rest of the year. In a room with a high ceiling, it leaves the indoor space completely free. The unit uses R-410A, the previous-generation refrigerant: a proven technology, with two separate charges, one per circuit.
On the construction side, the unit is assembled in Norman, Oklahoma, goes through a fully automated run test on the assembly line and arrives configured and commissioned at the factory. Its embossed top stiffens the cabinet, its powder paint is rated at 750 hours of salt spray, and YORK tests and rates it for cooling up to an outdoor temperature of 125 °F (52 °C).

Heating a very large volume
In heating mode, the heat pump delivers 114,000 BTU/h at 47 °F and 62,000 BTU/h at 17 °F. For the colder days, the YORK electrical tables list two electric heat kits in 575 V for this model, of 17 kW and 34 kW, installed in the field. We select the kit from the actual heat loss of the building and plan the matching disconnect switch.
Planning the installation of a 1,060 lb unit
- Lifting: base rails around the full perimeter, with holes for the lifting shackles and for the forks of a forklift.
- Roof curb: rigid large cabinet curbs of 14 in. (1RC0457) or 24 in. (1RC0459); the base rail also fits many existing curbs, which we confirm on site.
- Clearances: 72 in. above, 48 in. at the front, 36 in. at the back since the economizer is installed, 18 in. on the right side and 12 in. on the left side.
- Sound: with a rating of 86 dBA, we position the unit with the neighbouring windows and buildings in mind.
- Electrical: disconnect switch in the field and through-the-base connection kit (1TB0404) to avoid another hole in the roof.
- Security: burglar bars (1BD0410) and smoke detectors for the supply or return air available as accessories.
Quick maintenance in spite of the size
The condenser is cooled by a single 30 in. direct-drive fan, fastened to the grille for quick maintenance. The four 20 x 20 x 2 in. filters, shipped as MERV 4, are replaced without tools by MERV 8 or MERV 13 if needed. The LCD screen of the Smart Equipment board and its USB port give access to the fault codes, the history and the start-up reports, and a fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) module on the refrigerant side is available as an accessory.
