Moving up to 6 tons without giving up comfort on quiet days

When a commercial space goes beyond what a 5 ton unit can cover, it is tempting to go bigger and accept a unit that starts and stops constantly on mild days. This 6 ton YORK Sun Core XYE packaged heat pump avoids that compromise: its two-stage scroll compressor works at 67% or at 100% of its capacity depending on demand, and its IEER of 16.5 shows its performance at part load. Two stages in a single compressor: 67% or 100%, depending on demand

In the XYE line, the 3 to 5 ton models have only one cooling stage. The 6 ton is the first to offer two, through a single two-stage scroll compressor. When the load is moderate, it runs at 67% of its capacity rather than swinging between a full stop and full output; at peak hours, it steps up to 100%. The unit also has two 22 in. two-speed outdoor fans.

This behaviour explains the gap between the two efficiency ratings. The EER of 12.0 measures performance at full load; the IEER of 16.5, obtained with the IntelliSpeed drive, takes part-load operation into account. Like every unit of 6 tons and up, the XYEA7 is rated in EER and IEER, and not in SEER or HSPF.

A packaged heat pump in the large Sun Core cabinet

The principle does not change: a packaged heat pump brings compressor, coils, fans and control together in a single outdoor cabinet, set on the roof or on the ground and connected to the building's ducts. It cools in summer and heats by heat pump the rest of the year. What changes at 6 tons is the size: the XYEA7 moves up to the large Sun Core cabinet of 61.7 x 87.2 in., in its low 40.6 in. version, and it shares the roof curb of the 7.5 to 10 ton models.

The XYE series is the high-efficiency version of the Sun Core line. It uses R-410A, the previous generation refrigerant: a proven technology that technicians know well.

Read against the nomenclature of the Sun Core technical guide, this model number describes the following equipment:

• Belt-driven indoor blower, medium static pressure option.
• IntelliSpeed drive, which adjusts the supply fan speed according to the compressor or heating stage that is running.
• Factory-installed enthalpy economizer.
• Smart Equipment control, with factory-installed supply, return and outdoor air sensors.
• Standard indoor and outdoor coils, without E-Coat coating.
• No disconnect switch, no convenience outlet and no factory electric heat: these are added in the field as needed.

Enthalpy economizer and IntelliSpeed: fresh air at the right moment

The economizer on this model does not simply measure the outdoor temperature: its enthalpy sensor allows free cooling when the enthalpy of the outdoor air, which accounts for its humidity, is below the setpoint. Its low-leakage dampers (AMCA 511, class 1A) admit up to 100% outdoor air, and a dual enthalpy kit, installed in the field, can add a reading on the return air. Meanwhile, the IntelliSpeed drive modulates the airflow, and the minimum position of the economizer remains configurable.

The Sun Core details that make maintenance easier

Filters reached without a tool

The XYEA7 takes four 16 x 20 x 2 in. filters, supplied as disposable MERV 4. MERV 8 or MERV 13 filters slide in easily through the tool-free access panel, a sound choice for a clinic or busy offices.

Coils and refrigerant circuit

The coils, in copper tube with aluminum fins, are fed by a thermostatic expansion valve (TXV). The outdoor coil, with three rows, offers 21 ft² of surface, and the indoor coil, with four rows, 8.9 ft². A drier on the liquid line, high and low pressure switches and sensors on the suction line, which protect against liquid return, loss of refrigerant and coil frosting, complete the package.

A control you can read

The Smart Equipment board shows on its LCD display the status of the unit, the temperatures and the fault codes. Its USB port serves the fault history, the updates and the start-up reports, and a short-cycle protection with a minimum run time spares the compressor.

A rugged build

Assembled in Norman, Oklahoma, the unit has an embossed top for rigidity and a powder paint rated for 750 hours of salt spray. Every unit is commissioned, configured and tested at the factory.

Planning the installation

• Roof curb: the YORK curbs for the large cabinet are the 1RC0457 (14 in.) and the 1RC0459 (24 in.). If the unit being replaced sat on a small-size curb, we check the fit on site and plan a new curb if needed.
• Power supply: applied voltage from 187 to 252 V; the disconnect switch is planned for the field.
• Backup heat: three field-installed kits are available for this model in 208/230 V, from 6.5 to 24.8 kW at 230 V (4.9 to 18.6 kW at 208 V).
• Clearances: 72 in. above, 48 in. at the front, 36 in. at the back with an economizer, 18 in. on the right and 12 in. on the left.
• Connections: air openings convertible from vertical to horizontal, and a through-the-base electrical connection kit (1TB0404) offered to avoid another penetration in the roof.
