Wall-Mounted Heat Pump ARCOAIRE Deluxe | 9,000 BTU - R454B
Primary-bedroom comfort, with as little electricity as possible
Some owners choose a heat pump for cooling and keep the baseboards for winter. Others want the heat pump to do almost all the work, twelve months a year, and look at the efficiency ratings first. The Wall-Mounted Heat Pump ARCOAIRE Deluxe | 9,000 BTU - R454B is aimed at the second group: a single closed room, a compact size, and certified ratings that keep the electricity used for each hour of comfort to a minimum.
Its ratings are 31.5 SEER2, 16.0 EER2 and 14.6 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation under ENERGY STAR ID 3624485, and the certificate still lists its capacity at -30 °C.
Who this pairing makes sense for
This pairing makes the most sense in a room that will be heated and cooled by the heat pump for many years: a primary bedroom, a renovated bedroom with redone insulation, a room in a recent, airtight house. The more hours the heat pump runs each year, the more the efficiency gap with an entry-level unit shows on the bill. Conversely, for a room used only a few weeks a year, a simpler pairing may be enough, and we will tell you so.
A nominal capacity of 9,000 BTU/h suits a bedroom of ordinary size. If the room connects to an ensuite bathroom or closet, air circulates through the open door; if it has several exterior walls or large windows, we check it during the visit. We always confirm the size with a load calculation rather than floor area alone.
14.6 HSPF2: the rating that weighs on the winter bill
In Quebec, a heat pump spends more hours heating than cooling. That is why the HSPF2 rating, which measures heating efficiency over a whole season, is the first one to look at. Here is how to read this pairing's four ratings:
- HSPF2 of 14.6: seasonal heating efficiency. The higher it is, the less each winter month costs in electricity.
- SEER2 of 31.5: seasonal cooling efficiency, over the whole summer.
- EER2 of 16.0: cooling efficiency on a hot day, when demand is at its peak.
- COP: the heat delivered for each unit of electricity consumed, at a given temperature. An electric baseboard delivers one unit of heat for one unit of electricity.
These figures come from certificate AHRI 215413212, published by NEEP.
More heat at -15 °C than at -8 °C
The certificate lists 11,000 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), about 122% of nominal capacity, with a COP of 2.41, and 13,500 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), about 150%, with a COP of 2.00. The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published, even though the -15 °C value is higher than the -8 °C value.
What these figures show is a variable-speed compressor able to speed up well beyond its nominal capacity when the cold calls for it. At -15 °C, this pairing still delivers two units of heat for each unit of electricity, according to the certificate. For a well-insulated bedroom, that covers the demand on the great majority of winter days.
Still 7,500 BTU/h at -30 °C
The certificate also publishes the maximum capacity at -30 °C (-22 °F): 7,500 BTU/h, about 83% of nominal capacity, with a COP of 1.29. Even on the coldest nights, the heat pump keeps heating the room and delivers more heat than it consumes in electricity.
Depending on the bedroom's insulation, the existing baseboard can stay in place as backup for those cold peaks. Set a few degrees below the heat pump's set point, it stays cold for almost the whole winter. The ENERGY STAR cold-climate designation confirms that the pairing was evaluated for harsh winters.
A bedroom where you sleep well
In a primary bedroom, where the wall head goes matters as much as its ratings. We place it up high, on a wall that lets the airflow sweep the room without falling on the bed, and we take the door to the bathroom or hallway into account so air circulates. At night, once the room is at the set point, the compressor runs at low speed: no abrupt restart, no noticeable temperature change when you wake up.
To get the most out of these ratings, let the heat pump hold a steady set point day and night rather than turning it off and on. A moderate setback at night is still possible, but too large a gap forces the compressor to restart at high speed in the morning, where it is least efficient. Comfort is better, and so is consumption.
Summer: cooling and dehumidification
In cooling mode, the nominal capacity is 9,000 BTU/h. At 16.0 EER2, the unit stays efficient even on the hottest days. Running long at low speed keeps the indoor coil cold, and moisture from the air condenses on it before draining away. This continuous dehumidification gives drier air and more comfortable sleep, without setting the room colder than necessary.
Inverter, defrost and R-454B refrigerant
The wall-mounted heat pump moves heat instead of producing it. In winter, the R-454B refrigerant captures energy from the outdoor air; the compressor raises it to a useful temperature and the indoor unit releases it. In cold, humid weather, frost forms on the outdoor unit, which briefly pauses heating for a defrost cycle: the white vapour that rises from it is normal.
R-454B is the new-generation refrigerant, with a much lower global warming potential than the previous generation. Classified A2L, it requires precise installation methods, which we apply on every job.
LogisVert
This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.
Installation by AirGreen
Visit, load calculation and location
The home visit is free. We measure the room, note the orientation and size of the windows and the insulation of the walls and ceiling, then run the load calculation. The indoor unit is secured to the framing, with a drainage slope for condensate. The outdoor unit goes on a ground or wall stand, above the snow line, away from bedroom windows, including the neighbours', and sheltered from snow sliding off roofs.
Connections, electrical and commissioning
The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through a single opening, sealed on both sides, and a line cover can finish the run on the exterior wall. The system needs a dedicated circuit: we check the panel capacity during the visit. At commissioning, the circuit is evacuated and checked for tightness before the valves are opened; we then test heating, cooling and the drain, and show you the settings.
Maintenance and warranty
A highly efficient heat pump stays that way if it is well maintained. Rinse the indoor filters every two weeks in season, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost and a short pause in heating are normal. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.
Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.
