An open-plan shop, office or studio, comfortable for your customers and your team

A shop on a commercial street, an open-plan office, a hair salon, a yoga or photography studio: these premises often have a single large room, a storefront window exposed to the sun, a door that opens all day and occupants who give off heat. The Wall-Mounted Heat Pump ARCOAIRE Duracomfort | 36,000 BTU - R454B offers very high capacity in a single wall head, to cool and heat this kind of space without ducts.

Its certified ratings are 19.0 SEER2, 8.7 EER2 and 8.5 HSPF2. The certificate still lists its capacity at -25 °C. It runs on R-454B refrigerant, with a variable-speed compressor, and carries the Duracomfort range warranty described below.

Commercial premises, a different load

In a house, heat comes mostly from outside. In commercial premises, a good part comes from inside: lighting, computers, professional equipment, customers and staff. A south- or west-facing storefront adds a large solar load, and every time the door opens, outdoor air comes in. That is why commercial premises often need more cooling capacity than a residential room of the same size, and why the load calculation must take it into account.

Comfort is also part of the welcome: a steady temperature, with no draft and no heat spike, makes the premises more pleasant for customers and for the team that spends the day there.

What a 36,000 BTU/h head covers

A nominal capacity of 36,000 BTU/h typically suits large, open, single-space premises, or a very large residential room such as a living area under a cathedral ceiling. Air must be able to circulate from one end to the other: closed offices, treatment rooms or a back room separated by a door will not benefit from the main head and need their own solution. We discuss this during the visit, with the premises' floor plan in hand.

The variable-speed compressor lets this large capacity stay comfortable when demand is low, early in the morning or in the shoulder seasons: it slows down instead of short-cycling, which avoids the cold drafts and temperature swings that bother customers and employees.

Cooling during business hours

In cooling mode, the nominal capacity is 36,000 BTU/h. The 8.7 EER2 rating measures efficiency on a hot day, when the storefront gets the sun and the premises are busy; the SEER2 rating of 19.0 sums up the full season. At low speed, the indoor coil condenses moisture from the air, which drains away. This continuous dehumidification keeps the premises pleasant and helps protect humidity-sensitive merchandise and equipment.

Winter heating, certified figures

The certificate lists 24,200 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), about 67% of nominal capacity, with a COP of 2.28, and 22,000 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), about 61%, with a COP of 1.90. The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published.

The certificate also publishes the maximum capacity at -25 °C (-13 °F): 14,400 BTU/h, about 40% of nominal capacity, with a COP of 1.53. The heat pump therefore heats efficiently through the fall, the spring and most winter days; in deep cold, the premises' existing heating, whether baseboards, convectors or unit heaters, tops up. Set a few degrees below the heat pump's set point, it only switches on when needed.

Business hours and set point

Commercial premises are not occupied day and night. Outside business hours, a reduced set point in winter or a higher one in summer limits consumption. Avoid, however, shutting the heat pump off completely in deep cold: premises that cool all the way down overnight take a long effort in the morning, often just as the first customers arrive. A moderate set point, held continuously, gives you comfortable premises from opening time.

Electrical and outdoor unit in a commercial setting

A heat pump of this capacity needs a high-rated dedicated circuit. We check the capacity of the premises' panel during the visit. For the outdoor unit, the options depend on the building: a ground stand in a yard or lane, a wall stand on the rear facade, or a rooftop installation. If you are a tenant, the building owner's approval is generally required; we provide the technical information useful for that request. The unit must stay above the snow line, away from bedroom windows of neighbouring homes, and out of traffic paths. In an older commercial building, the line route to the roof or the lane can be longer; we plan it during the visit so it stays clean and protected.

The ratings, plainly

  • SEER2 of 19.0: cooling efficiency over the whole summer.
  • EER2 of 8.7: cooling efficiency at the hottest moment.
  • HSPF2 of 8.5: heating efficiency over the whole season.
  • COP of 2.28 at -8 °C, 1.90 at -15 °C and 1.53 at -25 °C: heat delivered per unit of electricity, where an electric baseboard or convector delivers one.

These figures come from certificate AHRI 215413216, published by NEEP. R-454B is the new-generation refrigerant, with a much lower global warming potential than the previous one; classified A2L, it requires precise installation methods that we apply on every job.

Installation, step by step

Visit, calculation and head location

The visit is free. We measure the premises, note the storefront, lighting, equipment and foot traffic, then run the load calculation. The wall head is firmly mounted up high, on a solid wall from which the airflow can cross the premises lengthwise, without aiming directly at the counter, workstations or customers' chairs. It is installed with a drainage slope for condensate. We plan the timing of the work with you to limit the impact on your business.

Lines, commissioning, maintenance and warranty

The refrigerant lines, the cable and the drain go through a single sealed opening, and a line cover can finish the run. At commissioning, the circuit is evacuated and checked for tightness, then we test heating, cooling and the drain, and show the settings to the person in charge. In busy premises, dust builds up quickly: rinse the indoor filters every two weeks in season, more often if needed. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost and a short pause in heating are normal. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.
