A sunroom or an addition, usable well beyond summer

A four-season sunroom, an enclosed porch, an addition built after the house: these rooms are often the most pleasant on a nice day and the least comfortable the rest of the time. Too hot under the July sun, chilly as soon as night falls in October, they escape the heating of the rest of the house. The Wall-Mounted Heat Pump ARCOAIRE Performance | 12,000 BTU 115V - R454B gives them their own cooling and their own heating, with a simplified electrical connection.

It runs on a 115 V circuit, a useful option when the electrical panel has no room left for a double breaker. Its certified ratings are 21.4 SEER2, 10.0 EER2 and 8.7 HSPF2, and it runs on R-454B refrigerant.

Glassed-in and added rooms, a load of their own

A room with a lot of glass behaves very differently from a bedroom or a living room. During the day, the sun brings in a large amount of heat, even in spring. At night and in winter, glass lets heat escape much faster than an insulated wall. An addition built at the back of a house often has three exterior walls, a floor on piers or on a slab, and ducts or baseboards that were not designed for it.

A nominal capacity of 12,000 BTU/h typically suits a good-sized addition or a well-built sunroom, with quality glass and proper insulation in the floor and roof. For a heavily glazed or older sunroom, we run a precise load calculation during the visit and tell you plainly what the heat pump will be able to cover in winter, and what it will not.

Why 115 V simplifies the connection

Added rooms are often far from the main panel, or fed by a small subpanel. Most wall-mounted heat pumps need a double breaker, which takes up two spaces; when the panel or subpanel is full, that detail can complicate the whole project. A 115 V unit connects to a single breaker, which leaves more flexibility to find room.

It still needs a dedicated circuit, and the panel's total capacity must allow it. We check this during the visit, before proposing anything. Once in place, nothing distinguishes how it runs from a model connected differently: the variable-speed compressor modulates its output the same way.

Summer under the glass

In cooling mode, the nominal capacity is 12,000 BTU/h. The 10.0 EER2 rating measures efficiency at the peak of the heat, when the sun hits the glass directly; the SEER2 rating of 21.4 sums up efficiency over the whole season. The variable-speed compressor adjusts its speed as the sun moves: it speeds up in the afternoon and slows down in the evening.

Blinds or exterior shades greatly reduce the load to fight, and the heat pump handles the rest. Running at low speed, the indoor coil condenses moisture from the air, which provides continuous dehumidification and prevents the fogging and heavy air typical of glassed-in rooms in summer.

Winter, certified figures

The certificate lists 9,000 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), about 75% of nominal capacity, with a COP of 2.24, and 7,000 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), about 58%, with a COP of 1.85. The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published.

In practice, the heat pump heats the room very efficiently through the fall, the spring and moderate winter days. That is often what turns a three-season sunroom into a room that is truly usable for much of the year.

Backup for deep cold

In deep cold, available capacity drops while the glassed-in room loses heat faster. Backup is therefore still needed to keep a room of this type comfortable in January: a baseboard, a convector or another source already in place. The setting is simple: the heat pump holds the main set point, and the backup thermostat is set a few degrees lower. The backup only switches on when the heat pump is no longer enough.

If the room is not used in the heart of winter, a reduced set point is enough to keep it above freezing and avoid condensation on the windows, while still benefiting from the heat pump's efficiency.

Inverter and R-454B refrigerant

A wall-mounted heat pump moves heat instead of producing it: in summer, it takes it out of the room; in winter, it draws it from the outdoor air. Inverter technology lets the compressor change speed instead of running all-or-nothing, which stabilizes the temperature in a room whose load changes hour by hour. R-454B is the new-generation refrigerant, with a much lower global warming potential than the previous one; classified A2L, it requires precise installation methods that we apply on every job.

The ratings, plainly

  • SEER2 of 21.4: cooling efficiency over the whole season.
  • EER2 of 10.0: cooling efficiency at the hottest moment.
  • HSPF2 of 8.7: heating efficiency over a full season.
  • COP of 2.24 at -8 °C and 1.85 at -15 °C: heat delivered per unit of electricity, where an electric baseboard delivers one.

These figures come from certificate AHRI 215413218, published by NEEP.

Installation, step by step

Visit, calculation and head location

The visit is free. We measure the room, the glass area and its orientation, the insulation of the floor and roof, then run the load calculation. In a sunroom, solid walls are rare: the wall head is often mounted on the house's former exterior wall or on a knee wall, always secured to the framing, up high, with a drainage slope for condensate. We choose the location that lets the airflow cover the whole room without aiming directly at the eating area or the armchairs.

Outdoor unit, lines and commissioning

The outdoor unit goes on a ground or wall stand, above the snow line, away from bedroom windows, including the neighbours', and sheltered from snow sliding off roofs. The refrigerant lines, the cable and the drain go through a single sealed opening, and a line cover can finish the run. At commissioning, the circuit is evacuated and checked for tightness, then we test cooling, heating and the drain, and set the backup.

Maintenance and warranty

Rinse the indoor filters every two weeks in season, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost and a short pause in heating are normal. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.

AirGreen, for the life of the installation
