Wall-Mounted Heat Pump ARCOAIRE Performance | 36,000 BTU - R410A
High wall-mounted capacity for spaces that do not divide into rooms
Some spaces do not split into rooms: a fully open ground floor under a cathedral ceiling, a large basement turned into a family room and playroom, a workshop attached to the house, a small commercial space or an open-plan office. In these large volumes, multiplying small heads complicates installation and control, and a single head that is too small is not enough. The Wall-Mounted Heat Pump ARCOAIRE Performance | 36,000 BTU - R410A answers this specific case: one indoor unit, one outdoor unit, and a capacity reserve designed for a single continuous space. Its inverter compressor slows down on mild days, where most of the heating season is spent, and only uses its full capacity when the cold or the heat demands it.
Its certified ratings are 18.0 SEER2, 9.5 EER2 and 7.8 HSPF2, and its nominal cooling capacity is 36,000 BTU/h.
One head or several: choosing well before signing
At this size, the first question is not the brand but the configuration. A single 36,000 BTU/h head is suitable when the space forms a single volume, with no partitions cutting off air circulation: a large rectangular room, an open-plan bungalow, a basement open from wall to wall. It is much less suitable for a house divided into closed rooms, where the air blown into the living room will never reach the back bedroom.
In that second case, a multi-head configuration distributes comfort better, room by room. When the question arises, we present both options with their respective advantages, and we recommend the one that fits your floor plan, not the one that is simplest to install. The load calculation then confirms that the chosen size matches the actual heat loss of the space, taking into account insulation, windows and ceiling height. An oversized unit runs in short cycles and dries the air poorly: we would rather tell you before the installation.
Directing a large airflow
A head of this capacity moves a lot of air. Well placed, it keeps the whole space comfortable; poorly placed, it creates an unpleasant draft near it and leaves the far end of the room lagging behind. We mount it high, on a wall from which the airflow can travel the greatest length of the volume, avoiding blowing directly on a workstation, a sofa or a table.
The adjustable louvres direct the air toward the ceiling in cooling, so it settles gently over the whole area, and toward the floor in heating, so the heat does not stay trapped under a high ceiling. Under a cathedral ceiling, this orientation makes a real difference in winter. In a commercial space, we also take into account the entrance door, shelving and low partitions that could block the airflow.
What the electrical installation requires
A high-capacity unit puts more demand on the electrical panel than a bedroom or living-room head. During the visit, we check the panel capacity, the space available for a breaker and the load already connected, whether a range, a dryer, a water heater, baseboards or a charging station. The heat pump needs a dedicated circuit, with a disconnect near the outdoor unit.
When the panel margin is thin, we tell you so in the written quote, with the possible options, so that nothing gets settled at the last minute on installation day.
Two winter points measured separately
For heating, we only report the published points. The certificate lists 20,000 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), about 56% of nominal capacity, and 22,000 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), about 61%, with a COP of 2.01 at that last point. The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published, even though the -15 °C value is higher than the -8 °C value.
In practical terms, at -15 °C the unit still delivers about two units of heat for each unit of electricity consumed, compared with just one for a baseboard or an electric furnace. For sizing, we rely on the more conservative of the two published values and compare it with the calculated heat loss of the space. During deep cold snaps, the existing heating remains as backup, set a few degrees below the heat pump's set point, so it only takes over if the space needs it.
How the heat pump draws heat from cold air
A wall-mounted heat pump moves heat instead of making it. In winter, R-410A refrigerant captures the heat still contained in the outdoor air; the compressor concentrates it, then the indoor unit spreads it through the space. In summer, a valve reverses the cycle and the indoor heat is rejected outdoors. R-410A is a proven refrigerant, well known to refrigeration technicians, which makes long-term service easier.
On a unit of this capacity, inverter technology makes a day-to-day difference. A variable-speed compressor can run for long periods at low speed during the mild days of October or April, instead of stringing together short cycles at full capacity. The temperature stays more stable in a large volume, starts are less frequent, and the unit keeps its full capacity for the days that require it.
Cooling a large volume in a heat wave
In cooling mode, the 9.5 EER2 rating measures efficiency in high heat, when demand is at its peak, and the 18.0 SEER2 rating measures efficiency over the whole season. In a large open space, the summer load comes from everywhere: sun-facing windows, the roof, appliances, the people present, the door opening and closing in a commercial space. The compressor speeds up during the hot hours, then slows down once the space has cooled.
This extended low-speed operation also serves dehumidification: the indoor coil stays cold, condenses moisture from the air, and the drain carries it outside. In a finished basement, that is often what changes the feeling of comfort most in July, more than the temperature itself.
The ratings, one by one
- SEER2 (18.0): cooling efficiency over the whole season. The higher the rating, the less electricity it takes for the same cooling.
- EER2 (9.5): cooling efficiency on the hottest days, when the unit works hardest.
- HSPF2 (7.8): heating efficiency over the cold season, the rating that weighs most on the bill of an electrically heated building in Quebec.
- COP (2.01 at -15 °C): the amount of heat delivered for each unit of electricity consumed, at that outdoor temperature.
These figures come from certificate AHRI 208447696, as published in the AHRI certification directory. They cover the pairing of indoor unit DLFEHBH36XAK and outdoor unit DLCERBH36AAK.

This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size and present the options in the quote.
Installing a high-capacity head, without shortcuts
Visit and outdoor unit location
The home visit is used to measure the space, note the ceiling height, the glazed area and the condition of the insulation, then do the load calculation. We then choose the location of the outdoor unit with you. It sits on a sturdy ground or wall stand suited to the unit, above the snow line, clear of snow sliding off roofs and away from bedroom windows, including the neighbours'. An outdoor unit of this size discharges a large volume of air: we leave it the clearance it needs and aim its air outlet away from patios and walkways.
Refrigerant lines, drain and commissioning
The indoor unit is firmly secured to the framing, with a drainage slope for condensate. The refrigerant lines, communication cable and drain go through a single opening, sealed on both sides, and a line cover can finish the run on the facade. The drain is routed so that water flows freely in summer and does not freeze in front of a door or walkway in winter; when gravity is not enough, a condensate pump is included in the quote.
At commissioning, the refrigerant circuit is put under vacuum and leak-checked before the valves are opened. We test heating, cooling and drain flow, check the dedicated circuit and the disconnect, then show you how to set the unit and aim the louvres for each season.
Maintenance and warranty
Rinse the indoor filters every two weeks in season; a unit of this capacity moves a lot of air and its filters load up quickly, especially in a commercial space or a workshop. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost and a short pause in heating are normal. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.
Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.
