Wall-Mounted Heat Pump CONFORTO MHWAL | 9,000 BTU - R410A
An upstairs bedroom that stays cool when the roof heats up
On the top floor, summer heat builds up: the sun heats the roof all day, warm air from the house rises, and the bedroom is still stifling long after sunset. The Wall-Mounted Heat Pump CONFORTO MHWAL | 9,000 BTU - R410A is a solid choice for this room: a size suited to a closed bedroom, and high cooling ratings, measured and published.
Its certified ratings are 28.1 SEER2, 16.2 EER2 and 11.5 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation under ENERGY STAR ID 2495124. Summer and winter, the same wall head conditions the room.
The top floor, where heat builds up
A bedroom under the eaves or on the second floor of a cottage receives heat from above. If the roof insulation is thin or the room has sloped walls, the ceiling stays warm until late in the evening. Fans stir this air without cooling it, and a window air conditioner blocks the view and lets warm air in around the frame.
A nominal capacity of 9,000 BTU/h suits an upstairs bedroom of ordinary size. When the room has a lot of glass, faces west or has weak roof insulation, we check it with a load calculation: the heat coming through the roof can justify a larger size. We do not oversize on principle, because a unit that is too big cools quickly, stops and leaves the humidity in the room.
A 16.2 EER2 rating for heat-wave days
In cooling mode, the nominal capacity is 9,000 BTU/h. The EER2 rating measures efficiency at the most demanding moment: a hot day, when the unit works hardest. At 16.2 EER2, this pairing stays efficient precisely during heat waves, when a bedroom under the roof needs it most.
The SEER2 rating describes efficiency over the whole summer, mild days included. At 28.1 SEER2, cooling this room takes little electricity for each hour of comfort, from June to September.
Humidity, the other half of summer comfort
A bedroom that is cool but humid is still unpleasant: the sheets stick, the air feels heavy. The heat pump's variable-speed compressor addresses this by running long at low speed once the room reaches the set point. The indoor coil stays cold, moisture from the air condenses on it and drains away. This continuous dehumidification lets you sleep comfortably without setting the temperature too low.
A few habits help too. Close the blinds on the sunny side during the day, and let the heat pump hold a steady set point rather than turning it off in the morning and restarting it at full power in the evening. A room under the roof that has heated up all day stores heat in its walls and ceiling; it is easier to keep it cool than to cool it all at once at bedtime.
Where to place the head in a room under the eaves
Upstairs bedrooms often have low walls, sloped ceilings or dormers. The wall head must be installed on a wall high enough for the airflow to cover the room without aiming directly at the bed. We favour an interior wall or a gable wall, with enough clearance above the unit for air return. The louvres are then set upward in cooling, so the cool air settles naturally throughout the room.
Winter, certified figures
The same bedroom is often cold in winter. The certificate lists 9,500 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), about 106% of nominal capacity, with a COP of 2.53, and 10,600 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), about 118%, with a COP of 2.00. The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published.
In practice, at these temperatures the heat pump delivers at least as much heat as its nominal capacity, which makes it a true primary heat source for a well-insulated bedroom for most of the winter. The existing baseboard can stay in place as backup, set a few degrees below the set point. The ENERGY STAR cold-climate designation confirms that the pairing was evaluated for cold winters.
The technology: inverter and R-410A
A wall-mounted heat pump moves heat: in winter, it draws it from the outdoor air and delivers it to the bedroom; in summer, it does the reverse. Inverter technology lets the compressor change speed instead of running all-or-nothing, which stabilizes the temperature and reduces consumption. The circuit uses R-410A refrigerant, proven over many years and well known to refrigeration technicians.
In practical terms, R-410A means straightforward service: technicians have the tools, procedures and common parts for this refrigerant, which makes maintenance and any repairs easier throughout the life of the unit.
What 28.1 SEER2 and 11.5 HSPF2 are worth
- SEER2 of 28.1: seasonal cooling efficiency. This is the rating that sums up the cost of a summer of comfort.
- EER2 of 16.2: cooling efficiency at the peak of the heat.
- HSPF2 of 11.5: seasonal heating efficiency, decisive for the winter bill in Quebec.
- COP of 2.53 at -8 °C and 2.00 at -15 °C: heat delivered per unit of electricity, where an electric baseboard delivers one.
These figures come from certificate AHRI 210605802, published by NEEP.

Installation by AirGreen, from the roofline to the panel
Visit and load calculation
During the visit, we look at what makes the room hot: orientation, glass area, dormers, insulation of the roof and sloped walls. The load calculation confirms the size before the quote. We also choose with you the wall for the head and the location of the outdoor unit, taking into account the line route from the upper floor.
When the house has several upstairs bedrooms, we discuss it frankly: a head in one bedroom will not cool the neighbouring rooms whose doors stay closed. Depending on the case, we present a head per bedroom or a multi-zone solution, and you choose knowing the trade-offs.
Lines, drain and outdoor unit
From an upper floor, the refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain exit through a single opening, sealed on both sides, then run down the exterior wall in a line cover that gives a clean, protected route. The drain follows a continuous slope to the ground, away from doors and walkways. The outdoor unit goes on a ground or wall stand, above the snow line, away from bedroom windows, including the neighbours'.
Electrical, commissioning and maintenance
The system needs a dedicated circuit: we check the panel capacity during the visit. At commissioning, the circuit is evacuated and checked for tightness, then we test both modes and drain flow. After that, rinse the indoor filters every two weeks in season, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost and a short pause in heating are normal. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.
