Townhouse or Semi-Detached Home: An 18,000 BTU Unit That Still Delivers 17,200 BTU/h at -15 °C

In a semi-detached or townhouse, the shared wall limits heat loss, and the ground floor often forms one large space between the front of the home and the backyard. This makes it an ideal setting for the DURASTAR Sirius Heat Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 18,000 BTU - R410A. Its AHRI certificate assigns it a capacity of 17,200 BTU/h at -15 °C, and it heats down to -30 °C. That is enough to provide most of the heating for the open-concept area during most of the winter, with a $1,332 LogisVert rebate available.

Its certified ratings are 22.0 SEER2, 13.0 EER2, and 10.6 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation.

Certificate values

  • At 8 °C: 18,000 BTU/h, range of 6,118 to 23,068 BTU/h, COP of 3.34
  • At -8 °C: 11,100 BTU/h nominal capacity, up to 21,447 BTU/h at maximum capacity, COP of 2.80
  • At -15 °C: 17,200 BTU/h, COP of 1.89
  • At -30 °C: up to 9,600 BTU/h, COP of 1.43
  • Cooling: 18,000 BTU/h, range of 5,732 to 20,226 BTU/h

These values come from certificate AHRI 210568100, published by NEEP. At -8 °C, the certificate distinguishes between the nominal capacity of 11,100 BTU/h, achieved with a COP of 2.80, and a maximum capacity of 21,447 BTU/h. The inverter compressor therefore has plenty of reserve when the home requires more heat.

Heating a shared-wall ground floor

With only one exterior wall on the sides, or none in a central townhouse unit, a shared-wall ground floor loses most of its heat through the front of the home, the rear patio door, and the roof. A wall-mounted unit positioned to blow along the length of the home works well in this type of space. The upstairs bedrooms generally remain heated by their baseboards: air from a wall-mounted unit does not move well up a closed staircase. If the upper floor also needs air conditioning, we can discuss adding a second unit or using a multi-zone solution.

The maximum airflow of 531 CFM, along with the 382 and 459 CFM settings, makes it possible to adjust air circulation according to the season. The Follow Me function measures the temperature at the remote control, which is useful when the unit is installed away from the seating area.

Summer in a townhouse

In cooling mode, the certified range is 5,732 to 20,226 BTU/h, with a seasonal efficiency rating of 22.0 SEER2. The ECO/GEAR function reduces consumption in cooling mode, while the Gentle function redirects the airflow when it becomes too direct.

The $1,332 LogisVert rebate

The system has ENERGY STAR ID 2410688 and qualifies for a $1,332 rebate for owners of existing homes, according to the list in effect on the installation date. An enhanced rebate may apply in certain multi-unit buildings. We confirm eligibility before signing and prepare the detailed invoice and required model numbers.

Narrow lot, close neighbours: planning the installation

Semi-detached homes and townhouses create specific placement constraints. We address them during the in-home assessment.

The outdoor unit

The condenser measures 35.04 x 13.46 x 26.50 inches, weighs 101.0 pounds, and produces 59 dB(A). In a narrow yard, we look for a location that meets the manufacturer's clearance requirements, remains above the snow line, and is away from bedroom windows, both yours and your neighbour's. Some municipalities also regulate the placement of outdoor units; we check the rules for your address in Montreal, Laval, or Longueuil. At this weight, a ground stand on a stable base is often the best option. The base pan heater and Golden Fin anti-corrosion coating come standard, and DuraStar recommends keeping the unit powered continuously at 0 °C and below.

Long lines to reach the backyard

The refrigerant lines are 1/4 and 1/2 inch, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 98 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 66 feet. Beyond the factory charge, 0.16 ounces of refrigerant is added per foot. This allowance makes it possible to place the indoor unit on the most suitable ground-floor wall and the condenser in the backyard. Our installations are fully exposed, with no work inside the walls, and a finished line-set cover can be added.

The indoor unit

The wall-mounted unit measures 42.64 x 9.61 x 13.23 inches and weighs 29.5 pounds. With this system, its sound level ranges from 25 to 46 dB(A). The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the horizontal direction is adjusted manually. The remote control also offers Sleep, Turbo, Silence, the Clean function, a timer, and 8 °C freeze protection. The unit displays an alert code in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar states that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, which allows a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat to be connected.

Electrical requirements

208-230 V power supply, 20 A MCA, and a 25 A breaker on a dedicated circuit. We check the electrical service capacity and available panel space during the visit.

R-410A refrigerant

This system uses R-410A, a widely used non-flammable refrigerant. According to ENERGY STAR, its global warming potential is 2,088, compared with 470 for the R-454B used in newer generations of equipment. We present both options when preparing the quote.

What is normal

  • Defrosting lasts five to ten minutes; white vapour may escape from the condenser when operation resumes.
  • The compressor waits three minutes before restarting after a shutdown.
  • A slight whistling sound and plastic cracking noises may occur as temperatures change.

An indoor water leak, a persistent error code, or a tripped breaker warrants a service call.

Maintenance

Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, clear snow and leaves from the condenser, and schedule annual HVAC maintenance. Our wall-mounted heat pump cleaning service covers the coils, drain, and connections.
