19,200 BTU/h at -30 °C: the greatest extreme-cold reserve in our DuraStar wall-mounted lineup
When the mercury reaches -25 °C or -30 °C, most wall-mounted heat pumps provide only a fraction of their capacity. The DURASTAR Sirius Heat Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 33,000 BTU - R410A retains, according to its certification, up to 19,200 BTU/h at -30 °C. This is the highest extreme-cold capacity among all the DuraStar wall-mounted heat pumps we offer. At -15 °C, it still delivers 34,600 BTU/h, more than its nominal rating.
Its certified ratings are 20.0 SEER2, 11.7 EER2, and 10.0 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold climate designation and appears on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list with a $3,336 rebate.
Certification values
- At 8 °C: 35,000 BTU/h, range of 19,000 to 36,600 BTU/h, COP of 3.06
- At -8 °C: 27,800 BTU/h nominal capacity, up to 34,000 BTU/h maximum capacity, COP of 2.35
- At -15 °C: 34,600 BTU/h, COP of 1.80
- At -30 °C: up to 19,200 BTU/h, COP of 1.16
- Cooling: 33,000 BTU/h, range of 15,000 to 38,000 BTU/h
These values come from certificate AHRI 213160486, published by NEEP. Even at -30 °C, a COP of 1.16 means the unit still produces more heat than a baseboard heater using the same amount of electricity.
For homes where extreme cold has a major impact
In a large open room exposed to wind, a country home on the North Shore, or a poorly protected addition, the coldest nights determine comfort. A reserve of 19,200 BTU/h at -30 °C greatly reduces the share handled by baseboard heaters or auxiliary heating during these periods. We still keep a functional backup system, set a few degrees below the heat pump's setpoint, to ensure comfort during defrost cycles and cold snaps.
A unit of this size blows air from a single point. It is therefore suitable for open spaces, not homes divided into small closed rooms. For those homes, we compare two smaller units or a multi-zone solution.
The highest airflow in the wall-mounted lineup
The indoor fan offers four settings of 449, 529, 704, and 862 CFM, the highest maximum airflow among the DuraStar wall-mounted units we offer. With this system, the published sound level ranges from 29.5 to 52 dB(A). Silence mode lowers the noise to a minimum, while Turbo mode quickly circulates a large volume of air after an absence.
R-410A or R-454B at 33,000 BTU
DuraStar also offers this size with R-454B. It comes with a $3,720 LogisVert rebate, a 10.5 HSPF2 rating, slightly lower electrical requirements, and a refrigerant with a global warming potential of 470, compared with 2,088 for R-410A according to ENERGY STAR. The R-410A model presented here retains more capacity at -30 °C, 19,200 BTU/h compared with 17,800, and has a cooling range reaching up to 38,000 BTU/h. We compare the two with you, including the rebate and installed price.
The $3,336 LogisVert rebate
The system bears ENERGY STAR ID 2649628 and qualifies for $3,336 in assistance for the owner of an existing home, according to the list in effect on the installation date. An enhanced rebate may apply in certain multi-unit residential buildings. We confirm the amount in writing before signing and prepare your application.
40 A circuit, 160-pound condenser, 3/4-inch lines: installing a 33,000 BTU unit
This size sits at the top of the wall-mounted lineup. The installation must be planned accordingly.
The electrical circuit
208-230 V power supply, 36 A MCA, and a 40 A circuit breaker on a dedicated circuit. This is the highest electrical requirement in our DuraStar wall-mounted selection. We systematically check the service capacity and available panel space; if an upgrade is required, it will be clearly shown in the quote.
The outdoor unit
The condenser measures 37.24 x 16.14 x 31.89 inches and weighs 160.0 pounds. We install it on a ground stand or stable base, above the snow line, with the clearances specified by the manufacturer. Its sound level of 63 dB(A) means it should be placed away from bedrooms and neighbouring patios. The base-pan heater and Golden Fin anti-corrosion coating are included, and DuraStar recommends keeping the unit powered at all times at 0 °C and below.
The refrigerant lines
The lines are 3/8 and 3/4 inch, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 164 feet and a maximum vertical rise of 82 feet. Beyond the precharge length, add 0.32 ounces of refrigerant per foot. A 3/4-inch gas line is rarely already in place in a home, so we generally plan for new lines. The installation remains fully exposed, without opening interior walls.
The indoor unit
The wall-mounted unit measures 49.57 x 11.14 x 14.25 inches and weighs 46.0 pounds. Its mounting plate is secured to the framing on a wall that is wide enough and has sufficient clearance below the ceiling. Condensate, which is abundant in summer, is routed by gravity or with a pump specified in the quote. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the horizontal direction is adjusted by hand. The remote control offers Follow Me, ECO/GEAR, Sleep, Gentle, Clean, a timer, and 8 °C freeze protection. An alert code appears in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar states that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, which allows a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat to be connected.
What is normal
- A five- to ten-minute defrost cycle in cold weather, with white vapour at the condenser and a pause in indoor heating.
- A three-minute delay before the compressor restarts.
- A slight refrigerant hiss and plastic cracking sounds.
An indoor water leak, a persistent error code, or a tripped circuit breaker requires shutting off the unit and scheduling a service visit.
Maintenance
Clean the indoor filters every two weeks: at 862 CFM, dirty filters quickly reduce efficiency. Clear snow from around the condenser and schedule annual HVAC maintenance. Our wall-mounted heat pump cleaning service takes care of it.
