The largest DuraStar wall-mounted unit, for spaces smaller models cannot cover

Some rooms defy the usual calculations: a living room with a cathedral ceiling, a mezzanine open to the main floor, a finished basement spanning the entire footprint, or a large living area added to the back of a house. The DURASTAR Sirius Heat Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 33,000 BTU - R454B is the largest format in the DuraStar wall-mounted lineup. It was designed for these spaces, with a maximum airflow of 830 CFM and certified heating capacity down to -30 °C.

Its certified ratings are 20.0 SEER2, 11.7 EER2, and 10.5 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation and appears on Hydro-Québec's list with a $3,720 LogisVert rebate, the highest amount among the DuraStar wall-mounted heat pumps we offer.

Certified capacities matching its size

  • At 8 °C: 36,000 BTU/h, range of 19,900 to 38,200 BTU/h, COP of 3.22
  • At -8 °C: 31,000 BTU/h, COP of 2.61
  • At -15 °C: 34,600 BTU/h, COP of 1.91
  • At -30 °C: up to 17,800 BTU/h, COP of 1.36
  • Cooling: 33,000 BTU/h, range of 15,000 to 35,900 BTU/h

These figures come from certificate AHRI 215359269, published by NEEP. Even in the coldest winter weather, the unit still delivers nearly the nominal capacity of an 18,000 BTU heat pump. This makes it suitable as the primary heating source in a very large room, with baseboard heaters or the existing heating system providing supplemental heat during cold snaps.

One unit or two smaller ones: the real question

A 33,000 BTU unit blows all its air from a single point. In an open, unobstructed space, that is a strength: one unit, one condenser, one line set, and one circuit. In a home divided into enclosed rooms, heat will not travel around corners, regardless of capacity. During the assessment, we therefore compare this format honestly with two smaller units or a multi-zone solution. We recommend the 33,000 BTU model when the room is genuinely open, the heat load justifies it, and the selected wall allows the airflow to travel across the longest dimension of the space.

Our starting point for sizing is approximately 18,000 BTU/h per 1,000 square feet. We then adjust it according to the actual volume: a 16-foot ceiling contains twice as much air as an 8-foot ceiling, and heat accumulates overhead. Ceiling fans, when present, help bring that air back down in winter.

Four airflow levels for a large space

The indoor fan offers 447, 530, 677, and 830 CFM. Sound levels range from 23 dB(A) in Silence mode to 56 dB(A) in Turbo mode. In a large room, the lowest setting suits quiet evenings, while the maximum setting helps circulate the air after a long absence. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the horizontal direction is adjusted manually during commissioning according to the shape of the room.

The $3,720 LogisVert rebate

The system carries ENERGY STAR ID 3621164 and qualifies for a $3,720 rebate for owners of existing homes, according to the LogisVert list in effect on the installation date. An enhanced rebate applies to certain multi-unit buildings. We confirm your eligibility before signing and prepare the supporting documents for your application.

A 43-pound wall unit and a 157-pound condenser: preparing for installation

The larger the unit, the more preparation matters. Here are the elements we check before submitting a quote.

The indoor unit wall

The wall-mounted unit measures 49.57 x 11.14 x 14.25 inches and weighs 43.2 pounds. Its mounting plate must be secured to the framing, and the wall must provide enough clear width and sufficient clearance below the ceiling for air intake. A unit of this size produces a significant amount of condensate in summer: we plan its drainage from the outset, by gravity whenever possible, or with a condensate pump clearly identified in the quote.

The outdoor unit

The condenser measures 37.24 x 16.14 x 31.89 inches and weighs 157.0 pounds. At this weight, we prefer a ground support or stable base above the snow line. Its sound level of 64 dB(A) means it should be placed away from bedroom windows and neighbouring patios, a basic rule in areas where properties are close together, in Laval as in Longueuil. The base pan heater and anti-corrosion coating are included as standard equipment.

Refrigerant lines

This system uses 3/8- and 3/4-inch lines. They are precharged for 25 feet and can reach 164 feet, with a maximum elevation difference of 82 feet. Beyond the precharged length, 0.32 ounces of refrigerant must be added per foot. The 3/4-inch diameter is uncommon in existing residential installations; in most cases, we install new lines. The installation remains fully exposed, with no work inside the walls, and a finished line cover can be added.

The electrical circuit

208-230 V power supply, 34 A MCA, and a 35 A circuit breaker. These are among the most demanding electrical requirements in the wall-mounted lineup. We check the capacity of the electrical service and the available space in the panel, especially in homes already heated with electricity. If an upgrade is required, we tell you before signing.

Unit features

The wireless remote offers Follow Me, which measures the temperature where you are, ECO/GEAR to reduce cooling consumption, Sleep, Silence, Turbo, Active Clean, and Gentle. Freeze protection maintains the room at 8 °C during an extended absence. Since R-454B is an A2L refrigerant, the unit includes a factory-installed leak detector. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar offers a separately sold Wi-Fi adapter module, and the unit is compatible with the DRSTAT101 wall thermostat.

Normal operating behaviour

In winter, the unit periodically defrosts its outdoor coil for five to ten minutes; white vapour may then escape outdoors and heat delivery stops temporarily. After shutdown, the compressor waits three minutes before restarting. A slight hissing sound and plastic cracking noises are also normal. A burning smell, a tripped circuit breaker, or water dripping indoors requires shutting off the unit and arranging a service visit.

Maintenance

  • Clean the indoor filters every two weeks during the season: on an 830 CFM unit, dirty filters quickly become noticeable.
  • Clear snow and leaves from the condenser.
  • Have annual HVAC maintenance performed. Our wall-mounted heat pump cleaning service covers the coils, drain, and connections.
