26.4 SEER2: the best air conditioning rating in our DuraStar wall-mounted selection
Of all the DuraStar wall-mounted heat pumps we offer, only one reaches 26.4 SEER2: the DURASTAR Sirius Heat Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 9,000 BTU - R410A. This rating measures air conditioning performance over an entire season. The higher it is, the less each hour of cooling costs in electricity. For a bedroom or office air-conditioned all summer, that is a strong advantage, especially since this system belongs to the Sirius Heat series, designed to heat down to -30 °C.
Its other certified ratings are 15.8 EER2 and 11.6 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation.
Certificate values
- Cooling: 9,000 BTU/h, range of 3,596 to 13,428 BTU/h
- At 8 °C: 12,000 BTU/h, range of 5,073 to 12,880 BTU/h, COP of 3.91
- At -8 °C: 9,300 BTU/h nominal capacity, up to 12,235 BTU/h maximum capacity, COP of 2.50
- At -15 °C: 11,000 BTU/h, up to 11,300 BTU/h maximum capacity, COP of 1.85
- At -30 °C: up to 5,400 BTU/h, COP of 1.12
These figures come from certificate AHRI 210568098, published by NEEP. The difference between nominal capacity and maximum capacity at -8 °C shows the reserve available from the inverter compressor when demand increases, for example at daybreak after a cold night.
Rare heating reserve for a 9,000 BTU unit
With 11,000 BTU/h certified at -15 °C, this small unit maintains a capacity above its nominal rating at a temperature that often returns in January. For a bedroom above a garage, a corner room with two exterior walls, or a poorly insulated office, this reserve makes a difference. Baseboard heaters remain in place for the coldest nights, set a few degrees below the heat pump's setpoint.
In summer, where this model excels
In cooling mode, the certified range of 3,596 to 13,428 BTU/h allows extended operation at low output, stabilizing the temperature and removing moisture from the air. The 15.8 EER2 rating, measured at 35 °C, is also among the highest in our DuraStar wall-mounted selection: performance remains excellent during heat waves. The ECO/GEAR function further reduces consumption in cooling mode, and Silence mode lowers noise to a minimum at night.
LogisVert and this model
This system carries ENERGY STAR ID 2410690, but it does not appear on Hydro-Québec's current LogisVert list. The technical sheet therefore indicates a $0 rebate. If financial assistance is a deciding factor, the Sirius Heat 12,000 BTU with R-410A appears on the list with a $1,236 rebate, and the Sirius Heat 12,000 BTU with R-454B with a $1,440 rebate. We check the current list as of your scheduled installation date.
R-410A, lines, and placement: what to know before installation
This system uses R-410A, a proven A1-class, non-flammable refrigerant. The industry is nevertheless moving toward A2L refrigerants with lower global warming potential: according to ENERGY STAR, the potential is 2,088 for R-410A, compared with 470 for R-454B. We present both options so you can make an informed choice.
Indoor unit
The wall-mounted unit measures 31.57 x 7.87 x 11.61 inches and weighs 19.0 pounds. With this system, its sound level ranges from 24 to 40 dB(A), and its airflow reaches 291 CFM at the highest setting. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the lateral direction is adjusted manually using the adjustment rod. The remote control offers Follow Me, Sleep, Turbo, Gentle, and Clean functions, a timer, and freeze protection that maintains the room at 8 °C. A refrigerant leak detection system displays an alert code in the event of a leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar indicates that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, allowing them to be controlled with a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.
Outdoor unit
The condenser measures 31.69 x 12.99 x 21.81 inches, weighs 74.0 pounds, and produces 54.5 dB(A). It is equipped with a base pan heater and Golden Fin anti-corrosion coating. DuraStar recommends keeping it powered continuously when the outdoor temperature is 0 °C or lower. We install it on a wall-mounted or ground stand, above the snow line, with the clearances specified by the manufacturer.
Refrigerant lines
The lines are 1/4 and 3/8 inch, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 82 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 33 feet. Beyond the precharged length, 0.16 ounces of refrigerant is added per foot. The 33-foot elevation difference must be monitored when the indoor unit is upstairs in a duplex and the condenser is on the ground: we measure this route during the site visit. The installation remains fully exposed, without opening the interior wall.
Electrical requirements
208-230 V power supply, 15 A MCA, and a 15 A circuit breaker on a dedicated circuit. This moderate requirement suits most residential electrical panels.
Operating limits
According to the manufacturer's manual, Sirius Heat models heat down to -30 °C. In cooling mode, the unit operates from -15 °C to 50 °C, a range that comfortably covers the needs of a home.
What is normal
- A five- to ten-minute defrost cycle in winter, with white vapor at the condenser.
- A three-minute delay before restarting.
- A rush of air when the louver returns to position, a slight whistling sound, and plastic creaking.
Indoor water leakage, a persistent error code, or a tripped circuit breaker warrants shutting off the unit and scheduling a service visit.
Maintenance
Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, as DuraStar recommends, keep the condenser clear, and schedule annual HVAC maintenance. Our wall-mounted heat pump cleaning service covers the coils, drain, and connections.
