A COP of 2.44 at -15 °C: the highest cold-weather performance in our DuraStar wall-mounted selection

Among the DuraStar wall-mounted heat pumps we offer, the DURASTAR Standard Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 18,000 BTU - R410A has the best certified coefficient of performance at -15 °C: 2.44. At this temperature, it produces nearly two and a half times the heat of a baseboard heater for the same amount of electricity. It combines this performance with a 24.0 SEER2 cooling rating and a $1,692 LogisVert grant.

Its other certified ratings are 13.5 EER2 and 10.5 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold climate designation and heats down to -25 °C.

Certificate values

  • At 8 °C: 18,000 BTU/h, range of 6,758 to 21,636 BTU/h, COP of 3.74
  • At -8 °C: 14,100 BTU/h nominal capacity, up to 16,238 BTU/h maximum capacity, COP of 2.65

These values come from certificate AHRI 207787132, published by NEEP. The certified data stops at -15 °C; according to the DuraStar manual, Standard models operate in heating mode down to -25 °C.

What these figures mean for a ground floor

With 14,100 BTU/h at -8 °C, this system efficiently heats a medium-sized open-concept area during most of the winter. During cold snaps, baseboard heaters or the existing heating system supplement the output, set a few degrees below the heat pump's setpoint. This is the configuration in which the 2.44 performance at -15 °C provides the greatest savings: every hour the heat pump remains the primary heat source costs significantly less than an hour of baseboard heating.

Cooling down to 2,020 BTU/h

Among our 208-230 V DuraStar models, this one has the lowest certified cooling range. During mild but humid evenings, the unit continues running at a very low output, removing moisture from the air without overcooling the room. During heat waves, it reaches up to 19,947 BTU/h. The ECO/GEAR function reduces consumption in cooling mode, and Sleep mode adjusts the setpoint overnight.

The $1,692 LogisVert grant

The system has ENERGY STAR ID 2410732 and qualifies for a $1,692 grant for owners of existing homes, according to the list in effect on the installation date. An enhanced grant may apply in certain multi-unit buildings. We confirm the amount before signing and provide the required documents.

Brick facades, duplexes and townhouses: installing an 18,000 BTU unit properly

Many homes and duplexes in Montreal have brick cladding. This type of facade requires an adapted installation method.

Going through a brick wall

The lines are routed through the brick using a suitable drilling tool, then the opening is carefully sealed to prevent water and air infiltration. The location is selected to avoid lintels, joists and existing ducts. Our installations remain fully exposed, with no interior wall opening other than this passage, and a finish cover can conceal the lines on the facade for a cleaner appearance.

The outdoor unit

The condenser measures 35.06 x 13.44 x 26.50 inches, weighs 94.4 pounds and produces 58.8 dB(A). On a solid brick facade, a properly anchored wall bracket is often possible; on simple cladding, we prioritize anchoring into the structure or using a ground stand. The unit remains above the snow line, away from bedroom windows. The base pan heater and corrosion-resistant coating are standard, and DuraStar recommends keeping the unit powered continuously at 0 °C and below.

Refrigerant lines

The lines are 1/4 and 1/2 inch, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 98 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 66 feet. Beyond the precharge, 0.16 ounces of refrigerant is added per foot. In a duplex, this elevation difference makes it possible to connect an indoor unit upstairs to a condenser installed in the yard. Existing lines of the correct diameter and in good condition can be cleaned and tested for reuse.

The indoor unit

The wall-mounted unit measures 42.64 x 9.61 x 13.23 inches and weighs 29.5 pounds. With this system, its sound level ranges from 25 to 46 dB(A), and its fan offers three speeds of 382, 459 and 531 CFM. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the lateral direction is adjusted manually. It also includes Follow Me, Turbo, Silence, Gentle, the Clean function, a timer and freeze protection at 8 °C. An alert code appears in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar indicates that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, which allows the use of a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.

Electrical requirements

208-230 V power supply, 17 A MCA and a 25 A breaker according to the system's technical data sheet, on a dedicated circuit. We check the service entrance capacity and available panel space, especially in older duplexes.

R-410A refrigerant

R-410A is a non-flammable refrigerant that has long been used in residential HVAC. According to ENERGY STAR, its global warming potential is 2,088, compared with 470 for R-454B, which is found in newer equipment.

What is normal

  • A five- to ten-minute defrost cycle in cold weather, with white vapor at the condenser.
  • A three-minute delay before restarting.
  • Heating shutdown below -25 °C, in accordance with the manufacturer's limit.
  • A slight hissing sound and plastic cracking noises.

Indoor water leakage, a persistent error code or a tripped breaker warrant a call to our repair service.

Maintenance

Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, keep the condenser clear and schedule annual HVAC maintenance for the coils, drain and electrical connections.
