A COP of 2.70 at -8 °C: the efficient 9,000 BTU unit for a bedroom or office

The coefficient of performance, or COP, indicates how many units of heat a heat pump produces for each unit of electricity consumed. An electric baseboard heater has a COP of 1. The DURASTAR Standard Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 9,000 BTU - R410A has a certified COP of 2.70 at -8 °C and 2.24 at -15 °C. For an electrically heated bedroom or office, this translates into a direct reduction in your bill during the months when heating costs the most.

Its certified ratings are 24.0 SEER2, 14.7 EER2, and 11.6 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation and operates in heating mode down to -25 °C.

Certificate values

  • Cooling: 9,000 BTU/h, range of 2,501 to 11,979 BTU/h
  • At 8 °C: 10,000 BTU/h, range of 3,404 to 13,071 BTU/h, COP of 3.66
  • At -8 °C: 8,100 BTU/h nominal capacity, up to 9,543 BTU/h maximum capacity, COP of 2.70
  • At -15 °C: 7,500 BTU/h with a COP of 2.24, and up to 8,564 BTU/h maximum capacity

These values come from certificate AHRI 207787130, published by NEEP. The certified data stops at -15 °C; the DuraStar manual indicates an operating limit of -25 °C in heating mode for Standard models.

Standard or Sirius Heat in 9,000 BTU with R-410A

The 9,000 BTU Sirius Heat with R-410A focuses on reserve capacity in extreme cold: 11,000 BTU/h at -15 °C and heating down to -30 °C, with a cooling rating of 26.4 SEER2. The Standard model presented here takes a different approach. Its capacity at -15 °C is more modest, but each BTU is produced using less electricity, thanks to a COP of 2.24 compared with 1.85. In a well-insulated room with only one exterior wall, the Standard covers most of the needs and leaves the baseboard heaters to operate mainly during extreme cold.

Modulation that goes lower in cooling mode

Among the 9,000 BTU DuraStar wall-mounted heat pumps in 208-230 V that we offer, this one has the lowest certified cooling range, down to 2,501 BTU/h. During mild, humid evenings, the unit can therefore continue running at a very low output instead of stopping and restarting. The air is dehumidified more effectively, the temperature remains stable, and noise is reduced. Sleep mode adjusts the setpoint overnight, and the ECO/GEAR function reduces cooling energy consumption.

LogisVert and this size

This system has ENERGY STAR ID 2410734, but it does not appear on Hydro-Québec's current LogisVert list. The technical sheet therefore indicates a $0 rebate. If financial assistance is an important consideration, the 12,000 BTU Standard with R-410A appears on the list with a $1,200 rebate. We check the current list as of your scheduled installation date.

Installation, maintenance, and everyday operation of a 9,000 BTU R-410A unit

A unit of this size installs quickly, but the same quality standards apply as with a larger model.

The indoor unit

The wall-mounted unit measures 31.57 x 7.87 x 11.61 inches and weighs 19.0 pounds. With this system, its sound level ranges from 24 to 40 dB(A), and its fan offers three settings of 153, 194, and 291 CFM. We position it so that the airflow covers the room without blowing directly toward the bed or workstation. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the horizontal direction is adjusted manually using the adjustment rod. The remote also offers Follow Me, Turbo, Silence, Gentle, the Clean function, a timer, and freeze protection that maintains the room at 8 °C. An alert code appears in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar indicates that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, which accepts a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.

The outdoor unit

The condenser measures 30.12 x 11.93 x 21.85 inches, weighs 63.7 pounds, and produces 53 dB(A). It is equipped with a base pan heater and an anticorrosion coating. Its compact size suits a balcony, a wall bracket anchored to the structure, or a ground stand, always above the snow line. DuraStar recommends leaving it powered continuously at 0 °C and below.

The refrigerant lines

The lines are 1/4 and 3/8 inch, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 82 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 33 feet. Beyond the precharged length, 0.16 ounces of refrigerant is added per foot. When existing lines of these diameters are in good condition, their cleaning and testing are included. Our installations are fully exposed, with no opening in the interior wall.

Electrical requirements

208-230 V power supply, 13 A MCA, and a 15 A circuit breaker on a dedicated circuit, a modest requirement for most panels in Montréal and the suburbs.

R-410A refrigerant

R-410A is a non-flammable refrigerant that has been proven over many years. According to ENERGY STAR, its global warming potential is 2,088, compared with 470 for R-454B, which is found in newer generations of equipment. We present both options in our quotes.

What is normal

  • White vapor from the condenser during defrosting, which can last five to ten minutes, along with a pause in indoor heating.
  • A three-minute delay before the compressor restarts.
  • Heating shutting off below -25 °C, in accordance with the manufacturer's limit.
  • A slight hissing sound and plastic cracking noises as temperatures change.

Water leaking indoors, a persistent error code, or a tripped circuit breaker warrants a call to our repair service.

Maintenance

Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, as recommended by DuraStar. Keep the condenser clear of snow and leaves, and schedule annual HVAC maintenance for the coils, drain, and electrical connections.
