GENERAL AIRSTAGE ALTAIR 500 KPAS 9,000 BTU: the ENERGY STAR Fujitsu Wall-Mounted Heat Pump, quiet and frugal, for a small bedroom or a closed office in Montreal

Two figures sum up this model: 19 dB(A) at minimum speed and a SEER2 of 26.0. Before explaining them, one clarification that avoids any confusion: the GENERAL AIRSTAGE ALTAIR 500 9,000 BTU is the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE ALTAIR 500 9,000 BTU, with the same indoor unit ASUH09KPAS, the same outdoor unit AOUH09KPAS1, the same AHRI certificate 215212609, the same NEEP-certified values and the same warranty. The manufacturer changed its name, not its machine: Fujitsu General Limited became GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026.

The 9,000 BTU is the smallest capacity in the series, and that is a quality when the room is small. A duplex bedroom in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, a closed office under the eaves of an Ahuntsic home, a child's bedroom above the garage: these are rooms where an oversized wall unit cools too fast, stops, restarts and leaves the humidity behind. This model is calibrated for those spaces, and it brings them what you expect from a wall-mounted heat pump in a room where you sleep or concentrate: silence and a discreet bill.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

In August 2025, Fujitsu General came under the control of Paloma Rheem Holdings, owner of Rheem since 1988. On January 1, 2026, Fujitsu General Limited took the name GENERAL Inc. Nothing else changed: the head office and the research and development centre are still in Kawasaki, Japan, the factories are the same, and the AIRSTAGE products keep their model numbers and their warranty program. The GENERAL name has accompanied the company as a trademark since 1946; the company itself, founded in 1936, celebrates the 90th anniversary of its founding in 2026. In Canada, Rheem Canada has handled sales since February 2026; Groupe Master remains our distributor, and AirGreen keeps its AIRSTAGE Elite Plus installer status.

Because the Fujitsu logo is leaving the equipment gradually, the same model exists under two names for the duration of the transition. We keep both pages online so that you can check, line by line, that it is the same product; the table below is built for that, with the same values in both columns.

The twin page under the Fujitsu name is here: Fujitsu AIRSTAGE ALTAIR 500 KPAS R-32 9,000 BTU. Same units, same certificate, same figures.

Quiet. At minimum speed, the indoor unit runs at 19 dB(A), a level the ear no longer picks out in a bedroom at night; at full speed, it rises to 42 dB(A), long enough to raise or lower the temperature, then comes back down on its own. Its airflow of 394 CFM is scaled to the room: enough to move the air of a bedroom or an office, not enough to create a draft over the bed or the desk. The vertical louvers are motorized and sweep the room; the horizontal direction is set by hand, once, so that the air runs along the ceiling and comes down far from the pillow. The outdoor unit sits at 48 dB(A); in an NDG duplex driveway, where the houses almost touch, we place it so that it aims at neither your window nor the neighbour's.

Frugal. The SEER2 of 26.0 measures air conditioning efficiency over a full season, and the EER2 of 12.5 the efficiency in the middle of a heat wave; those are high values for a wall unit, and they matter in an office where a computer and two screens heat the room all day in August. In heating, the HSPF2 of 10.8 does the same job over the winter, and the COP of 3.07 at −8 °C, at its certified operating point, means that every kilowatt-hour becomes a little more than three kilowatt-hours of heat, against a single one for the baseboard under the window. These values earn the model its ENERGY STAR certification (ID 3554408), without the cold-climate designation; it is not listed on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list, and we will not promise you any grant with this unit.

What −15 °C means in a bedroom. In the NEEP cold-climate heat pump directory, AHRI certificate 215212609 gives 7,100 BTU/h at −15 °C, 79% of its nominal size, with a COP of 2.29; at −8 °C, at its certified operating point, 6,400 BTU/h. A bedroom or a closed office loses little heat, and those capacities are enough to hold the setpoint through almost the entire Montreal winter. Heating is guaranteed down to −15 °C; on colder nights, the existing baseboard fills in, and it stays in place for that reason. In mild weather, the reserve rises to 13,600 BTU/h at 8 °C, 51% more than the nominal size, enough to quickly warm a guest room closed for a week; and once the room is at temperature, the unit slows down to 1,800 BTU/h at −15 °C and 2,400 BTU/h at 8 °C, without on-off cycling that wakes you.

The installation, in a small room. The wall unit mounts high, most often above the door or on the wall facing the bed, never directly above the headboard or the workstation; on an exterior wall, the refrigerant line is shorter and the drain simpler. That line, in insulated copper of 1/4 and 3/8 in, passes with the cable and the drain through a single hole in the wall, in a line cover outside. The outdoor unit sits on a wall bracket or on the ground, raised above the snow, with the clearance needed for air and defrost water. Summer condensate drains by gravity; in an office under the eaves, the slope is not always possible, and a condensate pump is then included in the quote. The unit requires a dedicated 208/230 V circuit, with a minimum ampacity of 10 A (MCA 10) and a maximum overcurrent protection of 15 A (MOP 15), run by a licensed electrician. Before leaving, our refrigeration technicians do the nitrogen pressure test, the vacuum pull, the first start-up and the supply-air temperature reading.

Maintenance and warranty. In a bedroom, the indoor filters mostly collect dust and bedding fibres; they come out from the front of the unit, go under water and go back in once dry, and that step keeps the efficiency on the spec sheet. When it snows, keep a clearance around the outdoor unit. An annual visit by a refrigeration technician rounds it out: R-32 refrigerant charge, coils, drain pan and electrical connections. The warranty covers the compressor for 12 years, parts for 12 years and labour for 6 years, and Wi-Fi is added as an option if you want to set the bedroom from your phone.

Who this model is for. We propose it in four situations that come up often in NDG and Ahuntsic:

  • The master bedroom of a duplex where you sleep badly in July and where the baseboard under the window drives up the bill in January.
  • The closed office of the remote worker, often the smallest room in the house and the one most heated by screens, where silence at 19 dB(A) counts during calls.
  • The child's or teenager's bedroom, closed at night, where a steady temperature and a quiet unit make the difference.
  • The guest room or the room under the eaves, used in stretches, that you want to bring back up to temperature quickly without heating the rest of the house.

If the room is large, open onto a hallway or exposed on two walls, or if you are counting on a LogisVert grant, we will steer you toward a different capacity or model after the visit, and we will tell you why.
