GENERAL AIRSTAGE RL2 9,000 BTU on 115 V: the renamed Fujitsu Wall-Mounted Heat Pump for a bedroom or a small office, without touching the electrical panel

In a Villeray or Saint-Michel duplex, the first question is not the number of BTU. It is what the electrical panel can still accept. A full panel, a panel shared with the upstairs unit, a panel nobody has opened in years: before comfort even comes up, many wall-mounted heat pump projects run into the 208/230 V circuit that most models require. The GENERAL AIRSTAGE RL2 9,000 BTU exists to get around that obstacle: it runs on 115 V, the voltage of the home's ordinary outlets.

It is the same machine as the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE RL2 9,000 BTU, unit for unit: indoor unit ASU9RL2, outdoor unit AOU9RL2, same published values, same warranty of 12 years on the compressor, 12 years on parts and 6 years on labour. Its manufacturer, Fujitsu General Limited, became GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026, and that is all that sets it apart from the Fujitsu version. A point of honesty from the start: this model predates the current certification lists. It has no AHRI certificate, it is not ENERGY STAR certified and it is not on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list. The values on this page are those the manufacturer publishes, and we will give you no others.

What this unit does well is cool a bedroom or a small office with a SEER2 of 16, and heat in the shoulder seasons, with heating guaranteed down to −10 °C. What it does not claim to do is replace the baseboards in January. The rest of the page details both.

GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine

Even an entry-level model changes its name when its manufacturer changes hands. In August 2025, Paloma Rheem Holdings, which has owned Rheem since 1988, acquired Fujitsu General; on January 1, 2026, Fujitsu General Limited became GENERAL Inc. The head office and the R&D centre stayed in Kawasaki, Japan, the factories are the same, and the AIRSTAGE products keep their model numbers and their warranty program. As for the GENERAL name, it has been in use as a trademark since 1946; the 90 years marked in 2026 are those of the company's founding, in 1936. For Canada, sales go through Rheem Canada since February 2026, and our distributor remains Groupe Master.

While the Fujitsu brand withdraws from the equipment, the same RL2 reaches us under one logo or the other. So we keep both pages, with the same values, so that you can check that the unit does not change with the label. The following table puts them side by side.

The twin page, under the original name, can be found here: Fujitsu AIRSTAGE RL2 9,000 BTU (115 V), same units, same values.

115 V: what it changes, and what it does not. A 115 V unit connects to the same voltage as the home's wall outlets, not to a 208/230 V circuit like most wall-mounted heat pumps. In a dwelling where the panel has no room left for a double breaker, where the panel is shared or aging, or in a rented unit where the landlord does not want heavy electrical work, that is often the difference between a project that happens and a project that waits. What 115 V does not change: the unit still needs its own dedicated circuit, installed by a licensed electrician, with a disconnect outside near the unit. Our estimator looks at the panel before the quote; sometimes a free 115 V circuit is all it takes, and sometimes one has to be added. Either way, you will know before signing.

What the manufacturer publishes, and nothing more. This model does not appear in the current certification lists; so we will not show you certified capacity at −8 °C or −15 °C, nor a seasonal heating efficiency, because we have no certified ones to show you, and we do not invent figures. What the manufacturer publishes is a SEER2 of 16 in air conditioning, heating guaranteed down to −10 °C, an indoor sound level of 23 to 43 dB(A) depending on speed and an outdoor sound level of 48 dB(A). SEER2 measures cooling efficiency over an entire season, with its mild days and its heat waves; at 16, the unit cools a bedroom for a reasonable consumption, without reaching the values of the more recent series. It is not ENERGY STAR certified, and it is not on the list of heat pumps eligible for Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program according to the list of October 27, 2026; we promise you no grant.

Air conditioning first, shoulder-season heating second. Heating guaranteed down to −10 °C covers a good part of fall and spring in Montreal, and many days in December and March. During those periods, the heat pump heats the bedroom for less than the baseboard, which stays off. When the temperature drops below −10 °C, the baseboard takes over, and the unit must not be counted as the main heating for the coldest months. We say so because that is how the unit is designed, and because a customer who buys a 115 V unit hoping to heat all winter will be disappointed. The one who buys it to sleep cool in July, with shoulder-season heating as a bonus, will be well served.

Compact format, discreet noise. The indoor unit measures 32.28 in wide, 8.13 in deep and 10.31 in high; it fits above a door or between the top of a window and the ceiling of a duplex bedroom. The outdoor unit measures 26 in wide, 11.34 in deep and 21.25 in high, one of the most compact formats we install: it fits on a wall bracket under a window, on the ground on a pad on the lane side, or on a balcony structure if it allows it. With 23 dB(A) at low speed inside and 48 dB(A) outside, it suits a bedroom and close neighbours. Wi-Fi is available as an option; the unit runs on R-410A refrigerant.

Installation in a Villeray or Saint-Michel dwelling. A wall-mounted heat pump does without ductwork: a wall unit inside, a unit outside, a refrigerant line, a cable and a drain that pass through a single hole in the wall. Here is what our refrigeration technicians settle in a duplex or a triplex:

  • The wall unit: high up, on an exterior wall when possible, aimed so that the air circulates along the ceiling rather than onto the bed or the desk.
  • The outdoor unit: at the back or on the lane side, on a wall bracket anchored to the structure, on the ground on a pad, or on a solid balcony, above the snow and away from the windows of the other units.
  • The refrigerant line: insulated 1/4 and 3/8 in copper, a sealed wall penetration, a line cover outside, the shortest route possible.
  • Drainage: summer condensate flows to the outside by gravity; when the slope is lacking, a condensate pump is added and shown in the quote.
  • Electrical: a dedicated 115 V circuit, installed by a licensed electrician, and an outdoor disconnect; the panel is examined at quote time.
  • Start-up: nitrogen pressure for the leak test, vacuum, start-up, supply-air temperature readings, then a tour of the remote with you.

Maintenance and filters. The indoor filters come out without tools and rinse under warm water; dry, they go back in, and in cooling season, that is the gesture that keeps the airflow and the cool air, and in a bedroom, it is also what keeps the unit quiet. Outside, clear the snow around the unit in winter even if it is used less. Our refrigeration technician comes once a year to check the R-410A charge, the coil and the drain. Parts, method and service are those of the Fujitsu version, whatever the logo; an extended warranty remains possible on request.

Who this 115 V unit is for. The bedroom of the upper unit of a Villeray duplex, the small office of a Saint-Michel triplex, the tenant who has the landlord's approval but no right to touch the panel, the landlord who equips a unit without opening the electrical wall. The person who wants reliable air conditioning in a single room first, who accepts shoulder-season heating and who counts on no grant. If the panel has room and you want to heat all winter with the heat pump, this is not the model you need, and we will show you a series certified for cold climates, with the figures to go with it.
