The Right Unit for the Room That Has Never Been Comfortable
Almost every home has one: the bedroom above the garage that stays icy in February, the basement office that becomes unbearable in July, the corner room with two exterior walls and a large window. The KINGHOME Polaris R32 | 9,000 BTU Wall-Mounted Heat Pump exists precisely for this kind of situation. It is the smallest model in the POLARIS series, and it is also the most efficient: 26.5 SEER2, 10.6 HSPF2, and an EER2 of 16. These three figures make it one of the highest-rated wall-mounted units we offer, across all brands.
What a 9,000 BTU capacity really solves
The rated cooling capacity is 9,100 BTU/h, with a modulation range from 2,730 to 12,965 BTU/h. This range is more important than the rated figure. A triple rotary inverter-driven compressor does not operate simply on or off: it drops to approximately 2,700 BTU/h when the room requires little, and rises to nearly 13,000 BTU/h during a heat wave. This produces a stable temperature rather than alternating between too cold and too hot.
In practice, this size is suitable for an enclosed or semi-open room of approximately 250 to 400 square feet, depending on insulation, orientation, ceiling height, and window area. A well-insulated north-facing bedroom does not have the same needs as a south-facing living room with a large picture window.
The oversizing trap
The most common mistake we encounter in wall-mounted heat pump projects is not choosing one that is too small. It is choosing one that is too large. An oversized unit reaches the requested temperature very quickly, then reduces its output or shuts off. The problem is that dehumidification takes place while the coil is running. A unit that operates too little removes little moisture, and the room becomes cold and clammy rather than cool and dry.
The 9,000 BTU POLARIS removes up to 0.8 litres of moisture per hour. In a bedroom, that is more than sufficient, and above all, the unit runs long enough to do it properly. A 12,000 BTU unit installed in the same location would often provide a less comfortable result at a higher price.
The number to watch for winter: 15,000 BTU at -8 °C
Many customers compare units based on rated capacity. In Quebec, that is not the right criterion. What matters is the heating capacity when it is truly cold outside.
- At 8 °C: 10,500 BTU/h
- At -8 °C: 15,000 BTU/h
- At -15 °C: 13,000 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.9
The figures may seem surprising: the unit produces more heat at -8 °C than at 8 °C. This is normal for an inverter system. In mild conditions, the compressor modulates downward because the room does not need more. When demand increases, it speeds up. The published capacity at -8 °C corresponds to this higher operating level, and it is exactly the data Hydro-Québec uses in its own lists.
In practical terms, a bedroom requiring 8,000 BTU/h at -20 °C remains served by this unit. The heating operating range extends down to -30 °C, and the unit carries the ENERGY STAR cold-climate designation, which is not a marketing claim but a separate certification.
20 dB(A): silence treated as a specification
The indoor sound level ranges from 20 to 42 dB(A). The lower value deserves some context: a quiet bedroom at night is around 30 dB(A). At minimum speed, this unit is therefore quieter than the room itself.
For a bedroom, this is often the deciding factor. We have seen customers replace a perfectly functional unit simply because they could no longer stand hearing it start at night. Airflow ranges from 194 to 353 CFM, allowing air to circulate without creating a direct draft over the bed or desk. The outdoor unit, meanwhile, is rated at 55 dB(A): something to consider if it must be installed near a neighbour's window, a common situation in Montreal plexes.
R-32 refrigerant and G-AI 2.0 smart control
The POLARIS uses R-32, whose global warming potential is significantly lower than that of the R-410A it replaces. This refrigerant also transfers heat more effectively, allowing for a lower charge for equivalent capacity: 38.1 ounces for this model.
The G-AI 2.0 control continuously adjusts the compressor and fan speed according to the difference between the setpoint and the actual temperature. Kinghome claims energy savings of up to 15% compared with the previous generation. What we check before confirming an installation
A specification sheet does not say whether a unit is suitable for a particular building. Here is what we look at during an assessment in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore, or the South Shore.
Electrical supply
This model requires a 208-230 V single-phase supply, a minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) of 13 A, and a maximum protection of 15 A. These are modest requirements, and that is a real advantage of the 9,000 BTU model: in many older homes in the Plateau, Verdun, or Rosemont, there is still room in the panel for a 15 A circuit, whereas a 30 A circuit would require upgrading the electrical service. We always check the panel before confirming a quote.
Outdoor unit location
The outdoor unit measures 34.4 x 14.8 x 21.8 inches and weighs 81.6 pounds. Its compact size makes installation on a wall bracket easier, a solution we favour in Quebec: it keeps the unit above accumulated snow and allows defrost water to drain properly. A unit installed too low eventually becomes blocked after two storms, defrosts more often, consumes more energy, and makes more noise.
Piping
The connection uses 1/4 and 1/2 inch lines, with a factory charge for 25 feet of piping and an allowable length of 10 to 131 feet. Beyond the factory-charged length, refrigerant must be added at a rate of 0.2 ounces per foot. This flexibility matters in triplexes where the indoor unit is at the front of the dwelling and the only available wall for the outdoor unit faces the backyard.
The mistakes we correct most often
- A unit installed facing an obstacle. A tall cabinet, beam, or hallway return diverts the air stream and cancels the benefit of 3D airflow.
- A condensate drain without sufficient slope. This is the leading cause of water damage we see on installations done too quickly.
- An abbreviated vacuum procedure. Moisture left in the circuit reduces efficiency and shortens the compressor's life. It is not visible at startup, but it will cost you three years later.
- Filters that are never cleaned. A clogged filter reduces airflow, and therefore capacity. Maintenance is simple and takes just a few minutes.
Certification and program eligibility
This model is ENERGY STAR certified, carries the cold-climate designation, and is among the units recognized as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient. Its reference numbers are AHRI 218451121 and ENERGY STAR ID 4617798. Keep them: financial assistance programs request them.
