The SENVILLE AURA R454B 12,000 BTU Wall-Mounted Heat Pump is intended for homeowners who want to cool efficiently in the summer while using their heat pump as a heating source during a significant part of the Quebec winter. For a house, condo, duplex, triplex, addition, or open living area in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore or the North Shore, the choice should never be based solely on the “12,000 BTU” figure.

At AirGreen, we mainly look at the actual capacity when temperatures drop, the modulation range, noise level, unit placement, drainage, refrigerant piping dimensions, electrical supply, and the quality of commissioning.

This new generation of the AURA line uses R454B refrigerant. It is therefore important not to confuse it with the older Senville AURA 12,000 BTU models using R410A that still appear in some older technical sheets or web pages. For the wall-mounted configuration discussed here, the key references include SENA-12HF-OG for the outdoor unit and SENA-12HF-IGG for the indoor unit, with AHRI reference 215735296. This combination is listed as a 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump certified for cold climates.

The technical specifications that really matter

Senville’s technical sheet for the SENA-12HF model lists a rated cooling capacity of 12,000 BTU/h and a rated heating capacity of 13,000 BTU/h. However, variable-speed technology allows the system to operate across a much wider range: approximately 3,500 to 13,500 BTU/h in cooling mode and 4,000 to 14,500 BTU/h in heating mode.

This modulation is particularly valuable in Greater Montreal. A heat pump that can reduce its capacity when demand is low helps prevent repeated on-off cycles. In a properly sized room, this promotes a more stable temperature, better humidity control during the summer, and generally quieter operation.

Senville specifically confirms the 1/4 in × 3/8 in combination for the SENA-12HF-IGG indoor unit. This is an essential detail when replacing an existing heat pump and the owner wants to reuse piping already inside the walls: we always check the pipe diameters, condition, length, and compatibility before confirming that they can be retained.

25.4 SEER2: what this figure means in a real installation

A SEER2 of 25.4 places this Senville AURA among the highest-efficiency wall-mounted systems for cooling. The manufacturer’s brochure also presents it as ENERGY STAR and as a heat pump suitable for heating down to -30 °C.

This does not mean that a heat pump will consume exactly the same amount of electricity in two different homes.

In Montreal, a unit installed in the open living room of a recently insulated bungalow will not operate the same way as the same unit installed in a century-old plex in Rosemont, Verdun, or Le Plateau, with less-insulated walls, large windows, and air infiltration.

Actual performance depends in particular on:

  • the building’s heating load;
  • insulation;
  • airtightness;
  • the amount of glazing;
  • sun exposure;
  • ceiling height;
  • the number of floors;
  • air circulation between rooms;
  • the temperature requested by the occupants;
  • and especially the sizing of the heat pump.

That is why we consider BTUs a starting point, never the sole selection criterion.

Is it really a heat pump for -30 °C?

Senville specifies a minimum outdoor operating temperature in heating mode of -30 °C, or -22 °F. The technical documentation also mentions cold-climate certification.

However, it is important to understand the difference between “operating at -30 °C” and “maintaining its full rated capacity at -30 °C.”

A heat pump generally loses some of its capacity and efficiency as the outdoor temperature drops. The owner must therefore consider not only the advertised minimum temperature, but also the heating capacity available in cold weather.

For the SENA-12HF-OG + SENA-12HF-IGG wall-mounted pairing, certification data indicates, among other things, a heating capacity of 11,500 BTU/h at approximately -15 °C and a COP of approximately 1.8 under this test condition.

In a Montreal, Laval, or Longueuil home, this means that a proper assessment must also consider the point at which the building’s heat loss exceeds what the heat pump can provide. Existing electric heating may then remain useful as supplemental heat during the coldest periods.

Is a 12,000 BTU heat pump suitable for 500 or 750 sq. ft.?

Senville describes the model as being suitable for spaces of approximately 500 to 750 sq. ft.

We use this information as a general guideline, but not as a sizing method.

Two 650 sq. ft. spaces can have completely different needs. Let’s consider two typical examples:

Case A: a recent condo in Brossard, with 8-ft ceilings, high-performance windows, good insulation, and an open-concept layout.

Case B: a 650 sq. ft. floor in an older Montreal duplex, with high ceilings, masonry walls, numerous windows, and an open staircase.

The Senville AURA 12,000 BTU could be very well suited to the first case, whereas further analysis would be needed for the second.

An oversized unit is not automatically better. In cooling mode, it can quickly reach the desired temperature without running long enough to dehumidify properly. Conversely, an undersized unit may run continuously during a cold snap without being able to maintain the setpoint.

Truly quiet indoor operation

Senville publishes four indoor sound levels corresponding to the different fan speeds:

  • 24 dB(A) at low speed
  • 34 dB(A)
  • 40 dB(A)
  • 47 dB(A) in Turbo mode

The corresponding airflow ranges from 240 to 530 CFM. The outdoor unit is rated at approximately 57 dB(A).

These figures explain why this type of unit may be suitable for a bedroom, office, living room, or workspace. However, the installation has a major influence on how the noise is perceived.

An outdoor unit installed directly on a lightweight structure without vibration control can transmit more noise into the building than a properly supported unit. In a Montreal duplex or a Longueuil condo, we also pay attention to nearby neighbors’ windows, balconies and bedrooms.

Dimensions: check the space before ordering

The indoor unit measures approximately 33.4 in wide × 9.18 in deep × 11.76 in high and weighs approximately 24.25 lb.

The outdoor unit measures approximately 30.31 × 12.20 × 21.65 in and weighs approximately 82.67 lb.

These dimensions are important in installations where space is limited: above a door, in a stairwell, between two windows, under a balcony or in a narrow side passage.

We are not just looking for a place where the unit “fits.” We must preserve the clearances needed for airflow, maintenance and future access to the components.

Wi-Fi, app and Alexa control

The Senville AURA is designed to integrate with a smart home. The manufacturer advertises control via an app and Alexa, allowing users in particular to change settings and create schedules remotely. The product documentation also mentions an Alexa USB kit among the included items.

For a homeowner who leaves home for several hours a day, this feature may be more useful than a mere gimmick. For example, it can slightly reduce the temperature when the occupants are away and adjust the setpoint before they return.

The unit also includes self-diagnostic and leak detection functions, designed to facilitate the identification of certain irregularities and system maintenance.

An excellent heat pump that is poorly installed can deliver mediocre results. A properly sized heat pump commissioned under suitable conditions is much more likely to maintain its performance, acoustic comfort and reliability.

Air must be able to leave the unit and circulate toward the area we actually want to heat or cool.

We avoid whenever possible:

  • obstacles directly in front of the air outlet;
  • locations where a tall piece of furniture will block the airflow;
  • wall sections incompatible with the required clearances;
  • drains that are difficult to route properly;
  • installations where future access to the filters would become difficult.

In an open-plan area, a difference of a few feet in the evaporator’s positioning can significantly change how air reaches the hallway, kitchen, or staircase.

An AirGreen experience on the South Shore that illustrates this point well

We have already documented the installation of a previous-generation Senville AURA 12,000 BTU in a residence on the South Shore. At that time, it was an R410A model, not the current R454B generation; the two versions must therefore not be confused from a technical standpoint.

The challenge was nevertheless highly revealing of the installation work involved: the indoor unit had to be placed above a door leading to a narrow staircase. Our team secured access, used a laser level to position the unit, discreetly arranged the routing of the lines, and, above all, properly planned the condensate drainage.

Once the system was commissioned, the client noticed a significant improvement in comfort in this area, which had previously remained cold, with air spreading toward the staircase and adjacent spaces.

The lesson remains exactly the same with the new AURA R454B: the indoor unit’s location is part of the system sizing.

Outdoor unit installation: Quebec snow changes the rules

In Boucherville, Longueuil, Terrebonne, Laval, or Montreal, we need to think about January when installing a heat pump in July.

The outdoor unit must be protected against:

  • snow accumulation;
  • water from a roof;
  • ice;
  • leaves and debris;
  • obstructions around the heat exchanger;
  • vibrations transmitted to the building.

During another Senville project documented by AirGreen in Montreal’s Le Sud-Ouest borough, the outdoor unit’s placement had been planned with low windows, a balcony, runoff, vibrations, and the available yard space in mind.

This is exactly the kind of detail we assess before deciding between a wall-mounted installation, a base-mounted installation, or another suitable structure.

R454B: why professional commissioning is particularly important

The R454B is part of the new generation of refrigerants used in several recent HVAC systems. It is classified A2L, which entails procedures and tools adapted to refrigeration work.

At AirGreen, our work on R454B systems places particular emphasis on circuit tightness, moisture removal, evacuation, connections, and compliance with the prescribed charge. We already apply these methods on our R454B installations in Greater Montreal and Montérégie.

The Senville AURA 12,000 BTU is pre-charged for a length of up to 25 ft. Senville specifies that an installation with a 50 ft kit requires additional refrigerant to be added on site by the installer.

Simply adding longer piping without adjusting the system when an adjustment is required may compromise its operation and efficiency.

Electrical supply: 230 V, MCA 12 A, and maximum protection 15 A

The manufacturer’s specifications indicate:

  • power supply 208/230 V;
  • minimum circuit ampacity of 12 A;
  • maximum protection of 15 A.

This information is useful for planning the project, but it does not replace verification of the electrical panel and the requirements applicable to the actual installation. In particular, we check the available space in the panel, the planned circuit, and the wiring route before finalizing the work.

Professional installation is tied to the warranty

The manufacturer clearly states that professional installation is required to maintain warranty coverage. The documentation provided with the product states 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts.

The warranty conditions applicable to the project should always be confirmed on the quote, since warranty programs, registration, and additional protections may change.

This is another reason to keep the model and serial numbers, the detailed invoice, and the commissioning documents.

Senville AURA 12,000 BTU Maintenance

A wall-mounted heat pump requires relatively little maintenance, but “little” does not mean “none.”

We particularly recommend:

  1. clean the indoor unit’s filters regularly;
  2. keep the outdoor unit’s air inlet and outlet clear;
  3. monitor condensate drainage;
  4. avoid the accumulation of vegetation and debris around the condenser;
  5. have the system inspected when an unusual noise, reduced capacity, or error appears;
  6. have the evaporator cleaned more thoroughly when buildup is visible.

A heavily loaded filter reduces airflow. A partially clogged drain can cause water problems. An outdoor unit surrounded by snow or leaves operates under poor conditions. These are often simple problems at first that become costly when ignored.

LogisVert: never automatically apply another model’s subsidy

Financial incentives must be verified based on the exact unit pairing, AHRI number, installation date, and the conditions of the program in effect.

The SENA-12HF-OG + SENA-12HF-IGG, AHRI 215735296 pairing appeared on a Hydro-Québec list with a capacity used for the program calculation of 9,800 BTU/h at -8 °C.

The LogisVert program currently displays incentives calculated based on eligible capacity at -8 °C. Hydro-Québec indicates, among other things, an amount of up to $140 per 1,000 BTU/h under certain residential options when all requirements are met.

For certain eligible multi-unit residential buildings, an enhancement available for installations completed as of June 15, 2026, may increase the incentive to $220 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C for an ENERGY STAR-certified cold-climate mini-split heat pump, subject to all program criteria.

As a mathematical example only, an eligible capacity of 9,800 BTU/h would correspond to:

  • 1 372 $ at a rate of $140 per 1,000 BTU/h;
  • 2 156 $ at a rate of $220 per 1,000 BTU/h.
