24,000 BTU, heating down to -30 °C, and genuine capacity for large spaces: what the SENVILLE AURA brings to a Quebec home

A 24,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump is not simply a larger version of a 9,000- or 12,000-BTU model. At this capacity, the equipment choice, its location, air circulation, and building sizing become decisive. The SENVILLE AURA R454B 24,000 BTU is specifically designed for large residential spaces, open areas, certain commercial premises, and zones where a small wall-mounted unit would quickly reach its limits.

At AirGreen, when we evaluate a wall-mounted heat pump installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore or the North Shore, we look beyond the “24,000 BTU” figure. A heat pump must be selected based on its actual capacity at different temperatures, its modulation range, airflow, electrical characteristics, and the physical configuration of the space.

The combination featured on our AirGreen page uses the SENA-24HF-OG outdoor unit and the SENA-24HF-IGG indoor unit, with reference AHRI 215735298. It is certified ENERGY STAR® and ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate, uses R-454B refrigerant, and includes WiFi control.

Senville documentation presents the SENA-24HF as a 24,000 BTU ductless mini-split heat pump designed for heating and cooling, with ENERGY STAR certification.

Capacity that is truly suitable for large spaces

Senville recommends this version of the AURA series for spaces of approximately 1,150 to 1,350 sq. ft., positioning it in particular for large rooms and open spaces. The brochure also specifies that professional installation is required.

However, this area guideline is a reference, not a sizing method.

Two 1,200 sq. ft. properties can have completely different heating needs. At AirGreen, we consider, among other factors:

  • the quality of the insulation;
  • the number of exterior walls;
  • the type and area of the windows;
  • sun exposure;
  • ceiling height;
  • the year of construction;
  • air leaks;
  • the layout of the rooms;
  • the floor where the heat pump will be installed;
  • the actual heating needs when the outdoor temperature drops below -15 °C.

This is particularly important in Greater Montreal, where a relatively recent bungalow on the South Shore will not respond like an older home in Montreal with high ceilings and several exposed walls.

24,000 nominal BTU, but a much wider modulation range

Senville's technical specifications provide much more interesting information here than nominal capacity alone.

In cooling mode, the SENA-24HF offers:

24,000 BTU/h nominal capacity, with an operating range of 12,600 to 27,900 BTU/h.

In heating mode, the manufacturer's stated nominal capacity rises to 29,000 BTU/h, with a range of 11,800 to 29,700 BTU/h.

This modulation range is important.

When a large open area is very hot at start-up, the heat pump can increase its output. Once the set temperature is nearly reached, inverter technology allows it to gradually reduce its capacity instead of operating only in on-off cycles.

For the homeowner, this promotes:

  • more stable temperature;
  • more gradual operation;
  • better adaptation to load variations;
  • fewer short cycles when the unit is properly sized;
  • better comfort control during days when demand is moderate.

This also explains why it would be incorrect to consider the SENVILLE AURA 24,000 BTU a unit that constantly produces exactly 24,000 BTU.

SEER2 21 and EER2 13: high efficiency despite the unit's capacity

According to the brochure's technical specifications, the SENVILLE AURA 24,000 BTU has a SEER2 of 21 and an EER2 of 13. For heating, the manufacturer indicates an HSPF2-4 of 13.5, an HSPF2-5 of 9.5, and a nominal COP of 3.42.

These values are important for a unit of this capacity because a 24,000 BTU system can accumulate many operating hours over the course of a year when it serves as both the primary air conditioner and heating source.

SEER2 is used to assess seasonal cooling efficiency. EER2 measures performance under certain standardized operating conditions. HSPF2, meanwhile, is used to compare seasonal heating efficiency.

For a homeowner comparing several 24,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pumps in Montreal or Laval, these indicators provide a much more useful picture than nominal capacity alone.

What really happens when the temperature drops to -8°C, -15°C, and -30°C

Our AirGreen specification sheet indicates heating capacities that are particularly relevant to Quebec's climate:

22,200 BTU/h at -8°C

24,200 BTU/h at -15°C

11,900 BTU/h maximum at -30°C

The Senville documentation, for its part, confirms a minimum outdoor operating temperature in heating mode of -22 °F, or -30 °C.

The -30 °C data point should be understood correctly.

The fact that a heat pump can operate down to -30 °C does not mean that it retains its full nominal capacity when the thermometer reaches that temperature. Here, the AirGreen specification sheet indicates approximately 11,900 BTU/h maximum at -30 °C, which is much less than the unit’s reference capacity of 24,000 BTU.

In a home where this unit is an important heating source, we must therefore check whether the building has adequate supplemental heating and when it might become necessary.

This is a point we regularly emphasize when explaining a heat pump quote in Quebec: the minimum operating temperature and the capacity available at that temperature are two different data points.

An interesting feature: 24,200 BTU at -15 °C

The AirGreen specification sheet indicates 24,200 BTU/h at -15 °C, which is practically the full nominal capacity of 24,000 BTU.

For the climate of Montreal, Longueuil, Laval, the North Shore and the South Shore, this data is highly relevant, because a heat pump is not evaluated solely based on a few hours of extreme cold. A large part of the heating season takes place at temperatures where the unit can still provide substantial capacity.

This is precisely where analyzing a Cold Climate heat pump becomes more useful than simply stating that it “works down to -30 °C.”

812 CFM: a unit capable of moving a lot of air

A 24,000 BTU unit must also distribute its energy throughout the room.

The documentation provides the following indoor airflow rates:

  • Turbo: 812.3 CFM
  • High speed: 618.0 CFM
  • Medium speed: 412.0 CFM
  • Low speed: 317.8 CFM

The sound pressure level varies accordingly from 54.5 dB(A) in Turbo to just 27 dB(A) at low speed.

This range allows the indoor unit to move a significant volume of air when a large room needs to be heated or cooled quickly, then reduce its airflow when the temperature stabilizes.

Why the indoor unit’s location matters so much with 812 CFM

With a small room heat pump, incorrect positioning can create an unpleasant draft over a bed or desk. With a unit capable of reaching more than 800 CFM, positioning becomes even more important.

We generally look for a location that allows:

  • to project air along the length of the room;
  • to avoid an immediate obstruction;
  • to promote circulation toward adjacent areas;
  • to avoid blowing directly onto occupants;
  • to maintain the necessary clearances around the unit;
  • to provide convenient access for maintenance.

The AirGreen specifications also indicate that the vertical and horizontal louvers are automatic, which helps distribute airflow more effectively throughout a large space.

An indoor unit significantly larger than a 9,000 or 12,000 BTU model

The size of the unit must be taken into consideration before installation.

The indoor unit measures:

46.85 in wide × 11.20 in deep × 14.59 in high

and weighs approximately 43.65 lb.

The outdoor unit measures:

37.24 in × 16.14 in × 31.89 in

and weighs approximately 130.29 lb.

We therefore cannot choose the indoor location based solely on aesthetics. Sufficient wall space must be available to install the unit, maintain the required clearances, ensure secure mounting, and provide for the passage of the refrigerant piping and drain.

Outside, a unit weighing more than 130 lb also requires appropriate support and installation adapted to Quebec conditions.

3/8 in – 5/8 in piping: a technical detail that should not be overlooked

The AirGreen specifications indicate piping of:

3/8 in – 5/8 in

This information becomes particularly important in a replacement project.

A situation we regularly encounter in HVAC installation is replacing an old heat pump while wanting to keep the existing piping. We never consider it automatically compatible.

The following must be checked:

  • the diameter of both lines;
  • their condition;
  • the total length;
  • the possible presence of contaminants;
  • their route through the walls;
  • the requirements associated with the new refrigerant;
  • the manufacturer's requirements for the new installation.

Reusing an unsuitable line solely to reduce installation costs can jeopardize the entire project.

R-454B and precharge for up to 25 feet

The SENVILLE AURA uses R-454B. According to the documentation, the unit contains a charge of 63.49 oz and is precharged for a piping length of up to 25 feet.

Senville also specifies that the system is precharged with R-454B for an installation of up to 25 feet, and that a 50-foot kit requires refrigerant to be added on site by the installer. The manufacturer also emphasizes professional installation to ensure performance and comply with the warranty terms.

For us, this confirms the importance of measuring the route before installation rather than simply estimating the distance between the indoor and outdoor units.

Electrical requirements: 208/230 V and a 25 A circuit

The documentation specifies:

208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz

with a voltage range of 187 to 253 V.

The circuit’s minimum ampacity is 24.9 A, and the specified maximum protection is 25 A. The manufacturer also specifies 14/4 AWG connection wiring between the units.

For an installation in Montreal, Laval, or Longueuil, we must therefore consider the electrical component from the project assessment onward. A 24,000 BTU heat pump requires more than a simple outlet or an existing power supply selected approximately.

The panel, circuit breaker, disconnect switch, wiring, and installation must meet the system’s requirements and applicable standards.

What the SENVILLE AURA 24,000 BTU concretely changes in an AirGreen installation

WiFi and Alexa: especially useful when the unit serves a large space

The heat pump features smart control compatible with Alexa. The documentation mentions app control, the ability to modify settings remotely, and the creation of schedules.

For a large open-concept space, this feature may be more useful than a simple gimmick.

For example, a homeowner can lower the setpoint while away and request a different temperature before returning. For a small business or office, schedules can also facilitate the daily management of air conditioning and heating.

The documentation also indicates that the package includes, among other things:

  • the indoor unit;
  • the outdoor unit;
  • a wireless remote control;
  • an Alexa USB kit;
  • the wiring harness between the units;
  • the manuals;
  • the installation package according to the selected option.

Dehumidification: up to 2.7 L/h

The specified moisture-removal capacity is 2.7 liters per hour.

This information is relevant during Quebec’s hot and humid periods.

In a large open-concept space, reaching the right temperature does not automatically guarantee comfort if humidity levels remain high. Modulation capacity and proper condensate drainage therefore become essential.

This is also why we pay particular attention to the drain during installation: slope, routing, outlet, risk of backflow, and accessibility for maintenance.

Built-in diagnostics and leak detection

The AURA series includes a system for self-diagnosis and leak detection. According to Senville, these functions are intended to signal certain problems and facilitate system maintenance.

This does not mean that a heat pump can maintain itself.

HVAC maintenance remains important, particularly for a unit that moves several hundred cubic feet of air per minute.

Clogged filters or a very dirty evaporator can reduce airflow. An obstructed outdoor unit can lose heat-exchange capacity. A poorly maintained drain can eventually cause water problems.

The electronic functions are therefore a diagnostic aid, not a replacement for maintenance.

Three Situations in Which We Seriously Consider This Heat Pump

Large Open-Concept Main Floor

In a home where the living room, dining room, and kitchen are largely connected, a high-capacity unit can often distribute air much better than a small heat pump located at one end of the building.

The airflow, which can reach 812.3 CFM, is particularly relevant in this scenario.

Large Home or Condo With Good Air Circulation

A relatively large area can sometimes be conditioned by a single wall-mounted unit when the layout facilitates air movement.

Conversely, a property with many separate rooms may need several zones even if its total area is comparable.

That is why the manufacturer's recommendation of 1,150 to 1,350 sq. ft. must always be considered in the context of the building.

Small Retail Store or Professional Space

The SENA-24HF may also be a good option for certain retail stores, offices, or commercial spaces where a wall-mounted unit can cover a large area.

In these projects, we take a closer look at the heat gains from:

  • people;
  • lighting;
  • electronic equipment;
  • large display windows;
  • doors that open frequently.

A 1,000 sq. ft. commercial space may require more cooling than a residence of the same size.

When 24,000 BTU Is Too Much

Oversizing is just as real an error as undersizing.

Installing a 24,000 BTU heat pump in a space that would actually require 12,000 or 15,000 BTU does not guarantee better comfort.

Even though the inverter can reduce its capacity to approximately 12,600 BTU/h in cooling mode, there is a limit to modulation.

In a space that is far too small, the unit can quickly reach the set temperature, which can shorten cycle times and impair humidity control.

We therefore prefer choosing an appropriate capacity rather than adding BTUs “for safety.”

The sound level must be interpreted according to the speed

The technical sheet states:

27 dB(A) at low speed

38.5 dB(A) at medium speed

43.5 dB(A) at high speed

54.5 dB(A) in Turbo mode

The outdoor unit is rated at 61.5 dB(A).

It would therefore be inaccurate to simply describe this heat pump as “27 dB.”

It can be very quiet at low speed, but a 24,000 BTU unit operating in Turbo moves a great deal of air and necessarily becomes more audible.

This reality is important when choosing its location, especially in a large bedroom, a living room adjacent to a sleeping area, or a condo.

Warranty: a point to confirm at the time of quotation

Our AirGreen product sheet currently displays a warranty of 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts, and no manufacturer’s labour warranty, with the possibility of additional protection.

However, the provided Senville brochure states 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts.

The technical sheet also repeats the wording 10 Years Compressor / 5 Years Parts.

This difference must therefore be verified according to the terms of sale and registration applicable at the time of purchase. At AirGreen, we prefer to clearly confirm the coverage that will actually accompany your installation rather than leave ambiguity on a product sheet.
