A 33,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump for large spaces where a smaller unit is no longer enough

The SENVILLE AURA R454B 33,000 BTU immediately stands out from the 9,000, 12,000, or 18,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pumps found in many condos and homes throughout Greater Montréal. Here, we are dealing with a high-capacity single-zone unit designed to handle much larger air volumes and meet the needs of a large open-concept area, a spacious basement, a commercial space, a workshop, or certain residential layouts where a single wall-mounted head must cover a substantial area.

At AirGreen, when we assess a wall-mounted heat pump in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or South Shore, we never stop at the 33,000 BTU figure. A high capacity may be exactly what is needed in a large open space, but it can also be excessive in a highly compartmentalized home. The real challenge is matching the unit's capacity to the building's heating and cooling load and, above all, to how air can actually circulate between areas.

Senville documentation presents the SENA-33HF as a 33,000 BTU ductless heat pump, ENERGY STAR certified, capable of heating down to -30 °C, with smart app and Alexa control. The manufacturer recommends it for spaces of approximately 1,500 to 1,750 sq. ft., particularly large rooms and open-concept areas.

However, this area is only a general guideline. A very open 1,600 sq. ft. home in Boucherville will not respond at all like a Montréal duplex of the same size divided into several bedrooms and hallways.

For us, accurately identifying the indoor and outdoor units is essential during an installation, warranty claim, diagnosis, or rebate verification. Two devices bearing the same brand and similar capacity may have different AHRI data, winter performance, or electrical requirements.

A nominal 33,000 BTU does not mean 33,000 BTU continuously

One of the main advantages of a modern inverter heat pump is its ability to modulate.

The SENVILLE SENA-33HF offers a cooling range of approximately 12,000 to 36,000 BTU/h. In heating mode, the manufacturer's stated nominal capacity is 34,500 BTU/h, with a modulation range of approximately 13,000 to 38,000 BTU/h.

This modulation is particularly important for a high-capacity wall-mounted heat pump. On a hot day in July, cooling demand may be high in the afternoon and then decrease considerably in the evening. The unit can then reduce its output instead of operating continuously at maximum capacity.

It should nevertheless be understood that a minimum of approximately 12,000 BTU in cooling mode remains high for a small room. That is why we avoid installing a 33,000 BTU heat pump in a space that is too small simply to obtain “more power.”

SEER2 of 19.5: how to interpret the performance of this large unit

The manufacturer's technical documentation indicates a SEER2 of 19.5 and an EER2 of 11.5. In heating mode, it lists an HSPF2-4 of 10.5, an HSPF2-5 of 8.5, and a nominal COP of 3.3.

For a unit of this capacity, a SEER2 of 19.5 represents an interesting efficiency level, particularly when comparing the use of an inverter heat pump with older air-conditioning solutions that operate with much more pronounced on-off cycles.

The manufacturer also claims potential annual energy savings of up to 50%. However, we prefer to present this figure with caution: actual consumption always depends on the equipment being replaced, insulation, setpoint temperatures, climate, operating hours, and building configuration. The brochure confirms the SEER2 of 19.5, ENERGY STAR certification, and this manufacturer estimate.

Genuine heating capacity for the Quebec climate

The AirGreen product sheet indicates heating operation down to -30 °C, which is also confirmed by Senville documentation.

The information becomes much more useful when we look at the available capacity in cold temperatures:

  • 32,000 BTU/h at -8 °C
  • 35,000 BTU/h at -15 °C
  • up to 20,700 BTU/h at -30 °C

These figures show why a heat pump should never be summarized solely by the claim “operates down to -30 °C.”

At -15 °C, the stated capacity remains very high. At -30 °C, it drops to approximately 20,700 BTU/h. At the same time, the building's heat loss increases as the outdoor temperature decreases.

For a homeowner in Laval, Terrebonne, Longueuil, or on the South Shore, the essential question is therefore not just whether the machine continues to operate at -30 °C. We must determine whether the BTUs available at that temperature are still sufficient to meet the building's heating load.

This is exactly why we analyze heating needs before using a heat pump as the primary heat source.

An indoor unit that moves a lot of air

At this capacity, air circulation becomes a central factor in comfort.

The brochure indicates four indoor airflow rates:

  • 890 CFM in Turbo mode
  • 720 CFM at high speed
  • 540 CFM at medium speed
  • 410 CFM at low speed

The indoor sound level ranges from 30 dB(A) at low speed to 53 dB(A) in Turbo mode.

This high airflow explains why this unit can be effective in a large open space. It also explains why its location must be chosen intelligently.

Installing a 33,000 BTU indoor unit directly above a sofa, work table, or bed can create an unpleasant draft. Instead, we seek to use the length of the room and the geometry of the space to allow the airflow to develop.

The AirGreen specifications also indicate automatic control of the vertical and horizontal louvers, which improves air distribution in large rooms.

Dimensions must be planned before installation

The indoor unit measures approximately 48.8 in wide × 11.2 in deep × 14.6 in high and weighs approximately 44.1 lb.

The outdoor unit is even larger—approximately 38.6 × 16.1 × 33.1 in, with a weight of approximately 140 lb. The stated outdoor sound level is 63 dB(A).

We therefore do not treat this model like a standard small wall-mounted heat pump.

Before a heat pump installation in Montreal or Greater Montreal, we must check:

  1. the actual width available for the indoor unit;
  2. required clearances;
  3. the strength of the mounting surface;
  4. the route of the refrigerant lines;
  5. the location of the outdoor unit;
  6. possible snow accumulation;
  7. drainage of water from defrost cycles;
  8. future accessibility for maintenance.

A 140-pound outdoor heat pump unit also requires a support suitable for the actual installation, whether it is a wall bracket, a base, or another approved solution.

A large area does not automatically mean a large heat pump

The manufacturer recommends this unit for approximately 1,500 to 1,750 square feet.

We use this information as a reference point, never as the sole sizing method.

Let us consider two very different scenarios.

In a 1,500-square-foot open-plan area with a living room, kitchen, and dining room that are practically without partitions, a high-capacity ductless heat pump can benefit from good air distribution.

In a 1,500-square-foot home consisting of four bedrooms, two hallways, and several doors, installing a single 33,000-BTU head in the living room absolutely does not guarantee that every bedroom will reach the desired temperature.

The cooling capacity may be sufficient on paper, while the real problem is air distribution.

This is a situation we regularly encounter in the HVAC industry in Montreal and the North and South Shore suburbs: increasing BTUs does not replace a good air-distribution strategy.

A particularly interesting application for large open spaces

This SENVILLE AURA may be suitable for:

  • a large open main floor;
  • a large basement;
  • a loft;
  • a workshop;
  • certain commercial rooms;
  • an open-plan office;
  • a large multipurpose room;
  • certain homes where the staircase and openings naturally promote air movement.

We recommend it much more cautiously in a home with many separate rooms.

In some cases, two smaller, well-placed units can provide better comfort than a single very large heat pump, even when their total capacity is similar.

3/8-inch–3/4-inch piping: a larger-diameter installation

The AirGreen specifications sheet lists 3/8-inch–3/4-inch refrigerant piping.

The 3/4-inch diameter on the gas side is significantly larger than that used on many small-capacity ductless heat pumps. It affects route planning, bends, wall penetrations, and the cost of an installation involving long piping runs.

The brochure also specifies that the system uses R-454B, with a listed charge of 68.4 oz, and that it is precharged for a line length of up to 25 feet.

Senville specifies that an installation with a 50-foot line set requires additional refrigerant to be added on-site by the installer.

R-454B is an A2L refrigerant. The installation must therefore comply with the methods, equipment, and procedures applicable to this new generation of refrigerants.

Why proper evacuation remains essential

A heat pump may operate after a poor installation without necessarily showing an obvious fault immediately.

This is precisely what makes certain errors costly.

An improperly prepared refrigerant line may contain moisture or contaminants. Improper evacuation, a leak at a connection, or an incorrect charge can affect performance, power consumption, and potentially compressor longevity.

At AirGreen, HVAC commissioning is therefore an integral part of installation quality, on an equal footing with the physical securing of the units.

Drainage: 3.5 liters per hour must not be ignored

The technical data sheet indicates a dehumidification capacity of approximately 3.5 L/h.

During Montreal's hot and humid season, a heat pump of this capacity can therefore produce a significant amount of condensate.

The drain must be:

  • properly sized;
  • installed with a sufficient slope when gravity drainage is used;
  • protected against backflow;
  • positioned so as not to cause damage to the facade or around the foundation.

A fully functional heat pump can become a source of water damage if drainage has been neglected.

Electrical requirements: 34 A MCA and maximum protection of 35 A

This unit is much more electrically demanding than a small wall-mounted heat pump.

The manufacturer's documentation states:

  • power supply 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz;
  • voltage range 187 to 253 V;
  • MCA: 34 A;
  • maximum protection: 35 A.

These values must be taken into account from the quotation stage.

In some older homes in Montreal, especially when the electrical panel is already heavily loaded by electric heating, the water heater, the stove, and other equipment, we must verify whether the electrical installation can accommodate the addition of the heat pump under suitable conditions.

The connection wiring between the units is indicated in 14 × 4 AWG in the brochure.

This communication/interconnection cable must not be confused with the complete sizing of the electrical power circuit. The latter must be carried out according to the nameplate data and the requirements applicable to the installation.

WiFi and Alexa: especially useful when the space has variable schedules

The SENVILLE AURA is compatible with smart control via an app and Alexa.

According to the brochure, it is possible to adjust the settings remotely and schedule operating times.

For a commercial space, workshop, or office, this feature can be particularly practical. The setpoint can be lowered after business hours and a comfortable level restored before occupants arrive.

The brochure also indicates the presence of self-diagnostic and leak-detection functions, intended to facilitate the identification of certain operating problems.

These features obviously do not replace a diagnosis by a refrigeration technician when the unit no longer heats properly, makes noise, frosts abnormally, or displays an error code.

Warranty: information to be confirmed at the time of purchase

The AirGreen sheet provided for this combination indicates a warranty of:

10 years compressor – 10 years parts – 0 years labor.

The attached Senville brochure nevertheless provides different information: 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts.

This difference must be clarified before purchase.

Warranty programs may depend on the seller, equipment registration, distribution channel, or specific conditions. We prefer to confirm the exact coverage applicable to the equipment sold by AirGreen rather than assume that a generic manufacturer’s warranty automatically applies.

Displayed LogisVert subsidy: $3,840

The AirGreen product sheet provided with this model lists a $3,840 LogisVert provincial subsidy, with an update dated November 26, 2025.

This information is particularly relevant for a 33,000 BTU unit, since the financial assistance can have a major impact on the project’s net cost.

However, a subsidy is never determined solely by the brand or nominal capacity. Eligibility may depend on the exact combination of equipment, the AHRI number, the building, and the program rules in effect at the time of installation.

We therefore always recommend confirming the applicable amount before making a final decision.

The mistake we want to avoid: choosing 33,000 BTU solely to “be sure”

In the field, oversizing a heat pump can sometimes seem reassuring.

A homeowner may think that a larger unit will heat faster and will therefore necessarily be better. In reality, the goal of an efficient installation is to have the right capacity, not simply the highest one.

An oversized heat pump can:

  • shorten cycle times;
  • reduce dehumidification quality under certain conditions;
  • create stronger drafts;
