The SENVILLE ELITE 12,000 BTU is intended for a very specific type of project: a homeowner who does not want to simply cool a room in the summer, but also wants to use the heat pump during a significant part of the Quebec winter. With its ENERGY STAR certification, cold-climate qualification, advertised operation down to -30 °C, R-454B refrigerant, and SEER2 rating of 29.4, it is clearly above an entry-level mini-split intended primarily for air conditioning.

The same documentation recommends this capacity for spaces of approximately 500 to 750 sq. ft.. This floor area is useful as a guideline, but it should never replace sizing based on the actual building.

For an HVAC installation, this precise identification is important. The nominal capacity listed in the commercial name is not sufficient to confirm a rebate, parts compatibility, a warranty, or winter performance data. The combination number and AHRI number must match the equipment actually installed.

12,000 BTU nominal, but a much wider modulation range

An inverter heat pump does not operate constantly at 12,000 BTU.

Page 4 of the brochure provides particularly useful data: the SENE-12EL can modulate in cooling mode from approximately 3,100 to 16,500 BTU/h. In heating mode, its listed range is approximately 4,100 to 17,200 BTU/h.

This means the machine can significantly reduce its output when the thermal demand becomes low, then increase its capacity when the load rises.

This feature matters greatly in a condo, primary bedroom, office, or medium-sized living area. A heat pump that can modulate low enough can maintain a stable temperature with fewer on-off cycles, which generally promotes:

  • more uniform comfort;
  • quieter operation;
  • greater temperature stability;
  • more efficient use of the inverter compressor.

This is also why we avoid automatically choosing a larger model “for safety.” An 18,000 BTU unit installed in an area that actually requires 9,000 or 12,000 BTU may be less suitable than a properly sized unit.

A SEER2 of 29.4 represents very high seasonal cooling efficiency for a 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump.

The manufacturer also advertises savings of up to 58% per year in certain comparisons. However, we prefer to treat this type of percentage as a commercial estimate rather than a promise regarding the electricity bill.

Actual consumption depends in particular on:

  • of the insulation;
  • of the windows;
  • of solar exposure;
  • of the requested temperature;
  • of the replaced appliance;
  • of the daily operating time;
  • of the outdoor temperature;
  • of the dwelling's configuration.

The SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2 ratings are therefore more useful for comparing two systems on a technical basis.

Heating down to -30 °C: the minimum temperature tells only part of the story

The brochure confirms a minimum outdoor heating temperature of -30 °C.

The AirGreen specifications also provide capacities at different temperatures:

  • approximately 11,000 BTU/h at -8 °C;
  • approximately 13,500 BTU/h at -15 °C;
  • up to 7,500 BTU/h at -30 °C.

This data provides a much more useful picture than simply stating “-30 °C.”

As the outdoor temperature drops, the building loses more heat. At the same time, the heat pump’s available capacity may decrease. At -30 °C, this SENVILLE therefore continues to operate according to the data provided, but it does not necessarily deliver the same amount of heating as it does at a milder temperature.

For a homeowner in Montreal, Laval, or Longueuil, the available capacity of the unit must therefore be compared with the room’s actual heat loss.

23 dB(A) at low speed: a strong point for bedrooms and offices

The SENE-12EL’s indoor sound level drops to 23 dB(A) at low speed. The documentation indicates a range reaching approximately 41.5 dB(A) at higher speeds.

Indoor airflow varies by mode:

  • 559.2 CFM in Turbo mode
  • 423.8 CFM at high speed
  • 211.9 CFM at medium speed
  • 153 CFM at low speed

 

This range allows the unit to operate very gently when the load is low, then significantly increase the airflow when the room needs to be brought back to the requested temperature quickly.

For a home office or bedroom, low-speed operation can make a big difference. For a more open area, the ability to increase the airflow improves the reach of the air stream.

Automatic louver control and real comfort in the room

The AirGreen specifications indicate automatic vertical and horizontal louver control.

This detail is far from secondary.

On a wall-mounted heat pump, the direction of the airflow directly affects:

  • cooling range;
  • heat distribution;
  • the sensation of a draft;
  • temperature uniformity;
  • comfort near the unit.

When choosing the location of the indoor unit, we avoid directing airflow straight at a bed, sofa, or workstation whenever possible.

A properly sized unit installed in the wrong location can be uncomfortable despite very good technical performance.

WiFi and Alexa: a useful feature when it is actually used

The SENVILLE ELITE includes Alexa integration and app-based control. The brochure indicates that it is possible to schedule operating times, modify settings, and control the system remotely.

The kit described by Senville also includes a wireless remote control and an Alexa USB module.

For a homeowner who leaves the house for several hours, this function can help avoid unnecessarily maintaining a very low temperature in cooling mode or a very high temperature in heating mode.

It is also practical in an office, rental property, or secondary residence.

Self-diagnosis and leak detection

Senville mentions an integrated self-diagnosis and leak detection system, designed to help flag certain problems and facilitate maintenance.

This does not replace a professional diagnosis.

When a heat pump loses capacity, frosts abnormally, produces an unusual noise, or displays an error code, the actual cause must be determined. A problem with a sensor, motor, refrigerant charge, drainage, or electronic control board can sometimes produce similar symptoms.

What determines the quality of a SENVILLE ELITE 12,000 BTU installation

R-454B: an important change from R-410A

The SENE-12EL uses R-454B.

Page 5 of the brochure indicates a charge of approximately 44.09 oz and a precharge corresponding to approximately 24.67 feet of piping.

Senville also specifies that a 50-foot installation requires refrigerant to be added on site by the installer.

AirGreen’s documentation specifies refrigerant line diameters of 1/4 in – 3/8 in.

R-454B belongs to the A2L refrigerant category. This requires appropriate procedures during installation and service.

For us, this change makes the quality of commissioning even more important:

  • properly executed connections;
  • leak testing;
  • evacuation;
  • a charge suited to the actual length;
  • checking operation after startup.

The precharge never replaces evacuation

A common idea with mini-splits is that a precharged system can simply be connected and then opened.

This is not how a professional installation should be carried out.

The refrigerant lines initially contain air and moisture. Before releasing the refrigerant charge into the circuit, proper evacuation is necessary.

A careless installation can cause the following over the medium or long term:

  • a drop in performance;
  • abnormally high consumption;
  • unstable pressures;
  • compressor problems;
  • avoidable service calls.

The quality of the installation therefore directly affects the performance of a heat pump that is highly efficient on paper.

Dimensions: an indoor head wider than a 9,000 BTU model

The indoor unit measures approximately 40.04 in wide × 9.53 in deep × 12.56 in high and weighs approximately 28.22 lb.

The outdoor unit measures approximately 35.04 × 13.46 × 26.50 in, with a weight of approximately 99.65 lb. The stated outdoor sound level is 57 dB(A).

Therefore, before installation, we must check:

  • the available wall width;
  • the necessary clearances;
  • the position of the windows;
  • the presence of molding;
  • the ceiling height;
  • the piping route;
  • future access to the filters;
  • the actually available outdoor space.

Particularly in Montreal, a location that appears ideal indoors can be difficult to replicate outdoors because of a balcony, a narrow passage, or neighboring-property constraints.

Electrical requirements: relatively modest demand for a cold-climate heat pump

The brochure indicates a 208/230 V single-phase power supply, an MCA of 3.0 A, and a maximum protection of 15 A.

The indicated connection wiring is 14/4 AWG.

The final circuit must, of course, comply with the nameplate data and the electrical requirements applicable to the job site.

This relatively modest demand is an advantage when we compare this unit with much larger heat pumps that may require significantly larger circuits.

Drainage and dehumidification: an often-overlooked aspect

The documentation indicates a dehumidification capacity of approximately 0.5 L/h.

Even though this value is lower than that of some higher-capacity models, condensate must be discharged continuously during humid periods.

We favor a properly sloped gravity drain whenever it is feasible. A condensate pump can be used when no suitable gravity route is available, but it adds a mechanical component that will eventually require maintenance.

An improperly installed drain can cause:

  • indoor leaks;
  • odors;
  • noise;
  • finish damage;
  • unnecessary service calls.

LogisVert rebate displayed at $1,320

The AirGreen fact sheet provided for this model displays a $1,320 LogisVert provincial rebate, with an update dated November 26, 2025.

This information is consistent with the presence of the ENERGY STAR and Cold Climate certifications indicated for the combination.

However, rebate programs must always be verified when the quote is prepared. The final amount may depend on the exact AHRI number, the building, and the conditions of the program in effect.

For a homeowner comparing the SENVILLE ELITE with a less expensive but ineligible unit, this difference can significantly change the project’s net cost.

Warranty: here, the brochure and the AirGreen fact sheet agree on the compressor and parts

Senville’s documentation indicates a warranty of 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on the parts.

The table on page 5 also confirms 10-year compressor / 10-year parts.

The AirGreen specifications sheet states:

10-year compressor – 10-year parts – 0-year labor, with the possibility of an additional warranty.

It therefore remains important to distinguish the equipment warranty from labor coverage. These are two different forms of protection.

A selection error we seek to avoid

A homeowner can easily compare two 12,000 BTU heat pumps and conclude that they are equivalent because their rated capacity is identical.

That is not the case.

Between two 12,000 BTU models, the differences may involve:

  • the SEER2;
  • the HSPF2;
