Page 4 of the brochure mainly highlights the true extent of the modulation range. In heating mode, capacity can vary from 9,700 to 29,700 BTU/h, while in cooling mode it can reach up to 27,900 BTU/h under certain conditions.
18,000 BTU on the label, up to 29,700 BTU under certain conditions
This is a point we always take the time to explain during a wall-mounted heat pump estimate.
The 18,000 BTU figure does not mean that the unit constantly operates at 18,000 BTU. The Inverter compressor adjusts its speed according to the building’s needs.
This Senville ELITE can therefore reduce its output when heating demand is low, then increase it when conditions become more demanding.
In an open-concept area in Brossard or Longueuil, for example, a heat pump may need only a fraction of its capacity on a mild October day. On a much colder January morning, the same unit can significantly increase its output.
This modulation improves several aspects of comfort:

EER2 of 15.0: a figure that also deserves attention
SEER2 indicates seasonal efficiency. The EER2 of 15.0, for its part, indicates cooling performance under a defined test condition.
For an 18,000 BTU unit, a high EER2 becomes relevant on hot days when the heat pump operates for long periods.
In areas such as Montreal, Laval, or the South Shore, where episodes of heat accompanied by humidity are common in summer, an efficient, properly sized heat pump can operate for long periods at a modulated output instead of constantly alternating between completely off and full capacity.

This does not mean that the heat pump maintains exactly the same efficiency or capacity at all temperatures. That is precisely why performance must be examined at low-temperature points.
The data associated with the unit indicate, among other things:

- approximately 22,600 BTU/h at -15 °C;
- approximately 11,900 BTU/h at -30 °C.
The fact that some certified values may appear to increase between two temperatures sometimes surprises homeowners. With an Inverter heat pump, certification data correspond to specific operating points and test conditions; they do not necessarily represent a simple linear curve in which every temperature decrease automatically results in lower capacity than at the previous point.
What is particularly significant for a Quebec homeowner is the capacity of 11,900 BTU/h still specified at -30 °C.
At this temperature, many standard heat pumps are simply no longer designed to operate.
A COP still above 1 at -30 °C
COP, or coefficient of performance, helps explain how much heat the heat pump delivers compared with the electricity it consumes.
The data provided for this Senville indicate, among other things:
- COP of approximately 3.01 at -8 °C;
- COP of approximately 2.34 at -15 °C;
- COP of approximately 1.45 at -30 °C.
A COP of 1 corresponds approximately to resistive electric heating, which directly transforms electricity into heat.
A COP above 1 means that the heat pump provides more thermal energy than the electricity directly consumed by its compressor.
At -30 °C, a COP of 1.45 therefore indicates that the heat pump still retains a theoretical advantage over electric resistance heating under the relevant test conditions, even though its performance is obviously much lower than that observed in mild weather.
This is exactly the nuance we find important at AirGreen: a heat pump is not absolutely “efficient” or “inefficient.” Its performance constantly changes with the outdoor temperature and the building’s load.
Up to 20,000 BTU of nominal heating capacity for a unit sold as 18,000 BTU
The brochure lists a nominal heating capacity of 20,000 BTU/h, despite a nominal cooling capacity of 18,000 BTU/h.
This distinction is normal for certain high-performance heat pumps and particularly relevant in Quebec, where heating often accounts for a much larger share of annual use than in other markets.
For a homeowner who wants to reduce the use of electric baseboard heaters, we always look at the heating capacity rather than relying solely on the number of BTUs printed in the product's commercial name.
A heat pump for 750 to 1,000 sq. ft.?
Senville recommends this unit for approximately 750 to 1,000 sq. ft., depending on the layout.
We consider this indication a guideline, not a rule.

- open or partitioned layout;
- number of windows;
- their orientation;
- insulation level;
- the floor where the space is located;
- ceiling height;
- exposed walls;

Let’s consider an approximately 850 sq. ft. duplex floor in Montreal.
If the living room, dining room, and kitchen are largely connected, an 18,000 BTU unit installed in a central location can distribute its air effectively.
Now let’s consider the same floor area with three closed bedrooms, a narrow hallway, and a separate kitchen.
Even with a high-capacity heat pump, air cannot pass through walls.
In this second scenario, increasing the capacity even further would rarely be the solution. A different system configuration may be more appropriate.
This is a mistake we regularly encounter in the HVAC field: confusing insufficient capacity with poor air distribution.

An airflow rate of up to 812 CFM
This heat pump can move a lot of air.
The brochure states:
- 318 CFM at low speed;
- 412 CFM;
- 618 CFM;
- up to 812 CFM in Turbo mode.
The indoor sound level similarly ranges from 27 dB(A) to approximately 54.5 dB(A) in Turbo mode.
At low speed, 27 dB(A) allows for very quiet operation.
But 812 CFM represents considerable airflow for a wall-mounted unit. The evaporator's orientation then becomes essential.
If the unit blows directly toward a wall a few feet in front of it, some of its air-distribution capacity is wasted. In a large open area, we instead look for an orientation that allows the airflow to travel across the room and mix naturally with the surrounding air.
An indoor unit nearly four feet wide
The indoor module measures approximately:
46.85 in. wide × 11.02 in. deep × 13.46 in. high.
It weighs approximately 43.65 lb.
The outdoor unit measures approximately:
37.24 × 16.14 × 31.89 in.
and weighs approximately 130.29 lb.
These dimensions genuinely change the installation preparation.
In a recent condo in Laval, we may have a large, unobstructed wall available. In an older plex in Montréal, we sometimes have to work around a window, a door, trim, a load-bearing wall, or a stairwell.
We therefore check the dimensions before even bringing the unit to the worksite.
The outdoor unit requires a proper support structure
At more than 130 lb, the condenser is not a small, lightweight outdoor unit.
Its support must be suitable for the weight, vibrations, and especially Québec's winter conditions.
We must plan for:
- sufficient height above accumulated snow;
- adequate airflow;
- access for servicing;
- a location that limits vibration transmission;
- reasonable protection from water and ice coming from a roof;
- compliance with applicable municipal requirements and clearance specifications.
In Longueuil, Boucherville, Laval, or Montréal, the outdoor location is often just as important as the indoor location.
1/4 in.–1/2 in. piping: what to watch for during a replacement
The unit uses a combination of 1/4 in. and 1/2 in. refrigerant piping.
When a homeowner replaces an old heat pump, we never automatically confirm that the existing piping can be retained.
We check in particular:

- the length;
- the condition of the copper;

R454B belongs to the A2L refrigerant category. The Senville manual specifically provides for a leak-detection system on the affected units and explains that, if a leak is detected, the compressor stops and the indoor fan is activated according to a safety sequence.
For us, this reinforces the importance of a professional HVAC installation, using tools and procedures suited to the refrigerant being used.
208/230 V, MCA of 24.9 A, and maximum protection of 25 A
The system operates on 208/230 V single-phase, 60 Hz.
The technical specifications state:
- MCA: 24.9 A;
- maximum protection: 25 A;
- power supply range: 187 to 253 V;
- specified interconnection cable: 14/4 AWG.
We use these values to plan the project, but the electrical installation must always be validated based on the panel and the building’s actual conditions.
A high-efficiency heat pump installed on an inadequate circuit remains a poor installation.
Wi-Fi, Alexa, and integrated diagnostics
Smart control is one of the model’s useful features.
The brochure mentions compatibility with Alexa, app control, the ability to set schedules, and the option to change settings remotely.
It also mentions self-diagnostic and leak-detection features.
In a primary residence, Wi-Fi makes daily management easier. In a cottage, rental unit, or intermittently occupied property, remote control becomes even more relevant.

The heating capacity indicated at -8°C is 19,300 BTU/h.
Hydro-Québec currently offers, when all program conditions are met, $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8°C for a cold-climate ENERGY STAR-certified heat pump.

This bonus is not automatic. The building must meet the specific conditions of the multi-unit residential program.

In our profession, we encounter errors such as:
- indoor unit positioned solely to shorten the piping;
- condenser too close to the ground;
- poorly insulated pipes;
- drainage line without adequate slope;
- electrical circuit selected without checking the nameplate data;
- unit oversized for the room;
- old copper reused without validation;
- condenser installed beneath a roof drainage outlet;
- service access almost impossible after the work.
Product quality does not make up for these errors.
Maintenance that preserves performance
The owner can directly contribute to the proper operation of their system.

- clean the filters regularly;
- keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow;
- do not block the indoor airflow with furniture;
- monitor the drain discharge;
- have the unit inspected if its capacity decreases;
