A 24,000 BTU heat pump for Quebec’s climate: the figures that really matter

The SENVILLE ELITE 24,000 BTU targets a very specific market segment: large residential spaces, open-concept areas, certain commercial properties, and homes where a wall-mounted heat pump must provide a significant portion of the heating during Quebec winters. For an installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, the South Shore, or elsewhere in Montérégie, however, its rated capacity of 24,000 BTU is only a starting point.

At AirGreen, we focus primarily on what happens when the temperature drops. A heat pump may carry a “heats down to -30 °C” label without actually producing 24,000 BTU at -30 °C. This distinction completely changes how the system should be sized.

The AHRI certificate dated May 22, 2026, precisely confirms the SENE-24EL-OH + SENE-24EL-IHH combination, with a rated cooling capacity of 24,000 BTU/h, a SEER2 of 25.00, an EER2 of 14.00, and an HSPF2 Region IV of 11.00.

An important clarification regarding efficiency data

There is currently a discrepancy between some commercial data published by Senville and the AHRI certificate corresponding to this exact combination.

The Senville documentation provided with this product lists, among other specifications, SEER2 24.0, EER2 11.0, HSPF2-4 of 15, and HSPF2-5 of 12.4. The official Senville page also includes these figures in its technical table.

For the SENE-24EL-OH / SENE-24EL-IHH system, however, we prioritize the specific reference from AHRI certificate 218069801, particularly when confirming a model combination for a subsidy application or comparing certified performance.

This verification may seem very technical, but it prevents a common mistake when purchasing a heat pump: comparing two units based on their series name rather than on their actual certified indoor/outdoor combination.

What “heating down to -30 °C” really means

The SENVILLE ELITE can operate in heating mode at outdoor temperatures as low as -30 °C. The manufacturer's documentation confirms this operating limit.

Nevertheless, the available capacity at different temperatures must be considered:

This information is much more useful than simply stating “-30 °C.”

At -30 °C, 10,200 BTU/h represents approximately 43% of the nominal 24,000 BTU capacity. In a house whose heat losses exceed this capacity, supplemental heating is therefore still necessary.

This is not a particular weakness of this heat pump. It is the normal behavior of an air-source heat pump: the more extreme the outdoor temperature becomes, the less heat is available in the outdoor air, and the harder the system must work to transfer it indoors.

For a property in Montreal or Laval, where a few very cold days can significantly increase the heating load, we therefore need to know:

  • which part of the house the heat pump serves;
  • what the actual heat losses are;
  • which heating system remains available as backup;
  • how warm air will circulate between the rooms.

Why 24,000 BTU does not automatically mean “1,500 sq. ft.”

Senville presents this capacity as suitable, for guidance purposes, for spaces of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 sq. ft.

We never select a heat pump based on this rule alone.

A well-insulated 1,200 sq. ft. floor in Longueuil, with an open-plan layout and a reasonable amount of glazing, can be very different from a floor of the same size in a century-old duplex in Montreal with high ceilings, poorly insulated walls, and large windows.

Among the factors we check:

  • actual area served;
  • ceiling height;
  • level of insulation;
  • orientation and solar exposure;
  • window dimensions and quality;
  • number of exterior walls;
  • property floor;
  • open-plan or partitioned layout;
  • presence of an open staircase;
  • heating needs in extremely cold weather;
  • air-conditioning needs during periods of high humidity.

An oversized 24,000 BTU unit can quickly reach the requested temperature and reduce its operating cycles under certain conditions. Conversely, an undersized unit may run continuously without maintaining the temperature during winter peaks.

The right choice therefore depends on the building’s actual load, not simply on dividing the square footage by an approximate factor.

Interesting modulation for less demanding periods

The Senville technical specifications indicate a cooling range of 7,300 to 26,000 BTU/h and a heating range of 7,300 to 25,000 BTU/h.

This modulation capacity is important in spring and fall.

An inverter heat pump does not have to operate constantly at 24,000 BTU. It can reduce its output when demand decreases, which generally allows for:

  • more stable indoor temperatures;
  • fewer abrupt starts and stops;
  • better comfort control;
  • consumption better suited to the load;
  • quieter operation at low output.

A substantial indoor unit: the location must be planned

A 24,000 BTU heat pump has a significantly larger indoor head than many 9,000- or 12,000-BTU units.

The SENE-24EL-IHH measures approximately:

46.85 in wide × 11.20 in deep × 14.59 in high.

It weighs approximately 64.2 lb. The outdoor unit measures 37.24 × 16.14 × 31.89 in and weighs approximately 130.29 lb.

Before installation, we therefore physically verify the available wall width.

This is particularly important in condos and homes in Montréal, where possible locations are often limited by windows, trim, kitchen cabinets, or facade constraints.

Up to 912 CFM indoors

According to the manufacturer’s technical table, the indoor airflow reaches approximately 912.3 CFM in Turbo mode, with other levels of 618, 412, and 317.8 CFM. Indoor sound levels drop to approximately 30 dB(A) and reach 56 dB(A) at the highest setting.

This high airflow is consistent with the purpose of a 24,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump: projecting air far enough into a large room or open-concept area.

The louvers can be adjusted vertically and horizontally, which helps direct the airflow according to the room’s layout.

Positioning nevertheless remains essential. A high-capacity heat pump installed in a narrow corridor or directly facing a nearby wall will not be able to distribute its airflow as efficiently as a unit placed in an open area.

62 dB(A) outdoors: placement also matters for the neighbors

The outdoor unit is rated at 62 dB(A).

In a densely populated residential area of Montréal, Laval, or Longueuil, we take into account the distance from:

  • bedroom windows;
  • the balcony;
  • the patio;
  • neighboring properties;
  • walls likely to reflect sound.

A mechanical installation is therefore not simply a matter of finding a place where the unit “fits.” Future access for maintenance, the clearance required for airflow, and snow accumulation during the winter must also be taken into account.

WiFi, Alexa, and remote control

WiFi is included, and the ELITE series allows app control as well as integration with Amazon Alexa. The manufacturer indicates that schedules, temperatures, and certain settings can be adjusted remotely.

For a primary residence, this notably makes it possible to lower the setpoint during an absence and gradually bring the home back to temperature before returning.

In a condo, office, or secondary residence, remote control can also make it possible to confirm that the system is still operating without being physically on-site.

The heat pump also incorporates diagnostic and leak-detection functions announced by Senville.

R-454B: a new generation of refrigerant

This version of the SENVILLE ELITE operates with R-454B. The charge specified in the technical documentation is 63.49 oz.

The piping specified on the AirGreen data sheet is 3/8 in – 5/8 in.

One detail nevertheless deserves particular attention: the Senville documentation provided is not perfectly consistent regarding the factory refrigerant charge length.

One section indicates that the system is precharged for an installation of up to 25 ft, and that a 50 ft line requires an additional charge. The technical table, for its part, mentions a 30 ft precharge.

At AirGreen, this kind of documentation discrepancy is precisely why we do not determine a refrigerant charge solely from a commercial product page. During installation, you must follow the instructions corresponding to the exact model, nameplate, and applicable installation manual.

An incorrect charge can reduce performance, increase consumption, and impair compressor operation.

Power supply: 208/230 V and maximum protection of 25 A

The SENVILLE ELITE 24,000 BTU operates on a 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz power supply. The published voltage range is 187 to 253 V.

The documentation states:

  • MCA: 24 A
  • maximum protection: 25 A
  • specified interconnection cable: 14/4 AWG

It is important not to confuse the interconnection cable between the units with the power wiring for the electrical circuit. The final circuit sizing must comply with the unit’s specifications, the site configuration, and the applicable electrical requirements.

AirGreen installation: turning a good technical specification into a properly functioning system

The certified performance of a heat pump can only be reproduced in a home if the HVAC installation is carried out correctly.

The Senville documentation also specifies that a professional installation is required to maintain warranty coverage and ensure the expected performance.

Our first check: where should the indoor head be installed?

In a large open-concept area, we generally look for a location capable of distributing air along the greatest possible length of the room.

A typical example on the South Shore is a ground floor combining the living room, dining room, and kitchen. A wall-mounted heat pump installed at one end of the space can sometimes cover this area very effectively, provided that the airflow is not blocked by a wall, a dropped ceiling, or a large cabinet.

In a more compartmentalized home, a single 24,000 BTU unit may have more difficulty delivering heat to bedrooms whose doors remain closed.

Adding BTUs does not fix an airflow problem.

The second critical point: condensate drainage

In air conditioning, the moisture extracted from the air must be drained properly.

When the configuration allows, we favor gravity drainage with an appropriate slope. An improperly installed drain can cause:

  • water leaking indoors;
  • odors;
  • dirt buildup;
  • backflow;
  • damage around the wall or floor.

The routing of the refrigerant lines, cable, and drain must therefore be planned before drilling the wall.

The outdoor unit must be prepared for a real winter

In Laval, Montreal, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, a heat pump installed too close to the ground can quickly become surrounded by snow.

During heating, the unit also periodically performs defrost cycles. The water produced must be able to drain away and freeze without blocking the underside of the unit.

We therefore plan the outdoor installation by considering:

  • height above the ground;
  • anticipated snow accumulation;
  • drainage of defrost water;
  • air circulation;
  • vibrations;
  • access for maintenance;
  • distance from windows and occupied areas.

Evacuation, connections, and commissioning

A professional installation includes much more than mounting the two units.

The quality of the refrigerant connections, tightness, circuit evacuation, and final validation have a direct impact on long-term reliability.

During commissioning, we also check heating and cooling operation, drainage, controls, louver movement, and communication between the units.

The mistake to avoid: believing that -30°C means 24,000 BTU at -30°C

This is probably the most important information to remember about this SENVILLE ELITE 24,000 BTU heat pump.

The rated capacity is 24,000 BTU, but the AirGreen product sheet indicates approximately 10,200 BTU maximum at -30°C.

For a home with high heat losses, this difference must be factored into the choice of backup system.

A homeowner replacing electric baseboard heaters therefore does not necessarily need to remove them simply because their new heat pump is advertised as operating at -30°C.

The heat pump can provide a very large portion of the annual heating while retaining supplementary heating for the coldest days.

LogisVert: Why capacity at -8°C is particularly important

The published capacity at -8°C is 17,100 BTU/h.

This value is particularly relevant in Quebec because Hydro-Québec currently calculates LogisVert financial assistance for an ENERGY STAR – cold climate heat pump at $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at -8°C when all program conditions are met.

The calculation for this combination is therefore:

17.1 × $120 = $2,052

This is the amount of 2 052 $ indicated on the AirGreen product sheet.

Hydro-Québec also specifies that heat pumps installed since November 26, 2025 must be ENERGY STAR certified to be eligible.

For certain eligible multi-unit residential buildings, an additional bonus may increase the assistance to $220 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C when all specific criteria are met. In this case, 17.1 × $220 would theoretically give $3,762 for this system. This bonus does not automatically apply to every duplex, triplex, or building; eligibility must be verified according to the program rules at the time of installation.

Warranty: 10 years compressor and 10 years parts

Senville announces a warranty of 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on parts for this series.

AirGreen’s product sheet therefore presents the standard warranty as follows:

10 years compressor – 10 years parts – 0 years labour, with the possibility of additional coverage.

It is important to distinguish these three elements. A warranty on one part does not necessarily mean that all diagnostic, travel, and labour costs are included for the same period.

Who do we primarily recommend this SENVILLE ELITE 24,000 BTU to

This heat pump deserves particular attention for:

  • a large open-concept area;
  • a main floor with a connected living room, dining room, and kitchen;
  • some large lofts and condos;
  • open commercial spaces;
  • homeowners looking for a cold-climate wall-mounted heat pump;
  • projects where WiFi and remote control are useful;
  • customers who want a cold-climate ENERGY STAR combination eligible for LogisVert when the other conditions are met.

It is less suitable when a homeowner tries to heat several closed-off bedrooms simply by increasing the capacity of the unit installed in the living room.

In these situations, we may recommend a different HVAC configuration based on the building’s layout.

  • the blower wheel;
  • the condensate drain;
  • the outdoor heat exchanger;
  • the clearance around the outdoor unit;
  • the accumulation of snow and ice in winter.

An indoor unit capable of moving more than 900 CFM at maximum speed must be able to breathe freely to maintain its airflow.

Maintenance becomes particularly important in homes with pets, dusty environments, and installations operating almost continuously in heating mode.

A properly selected SENVILLE ELITE 24,000 BTU can replace a large portion of annual electric heating.

With its ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification, AHRI combination 218069801, operation down to -30 °C, R-454B refrigerant, WiFi control, and 24,000 BTU capacity, this heat pump has very interesting features for the Quebec market.

Its true value becomes apparent, however, when the figures are analyzed in context: 17,100 BTU at -8 °C, 20,000 BTU at -15 °C, and approximately 10,200 BTU maximum at -30 °C.

These values make it possible to design a heating system much more intelligently than by relying solely on the nominal capacity listed on the box.
