An important clarification about the name “P Series 18 SEER”

The commercial name of this product line can easily cause confusion. YORK presents the family as the P Series up to 18 SEER, but the 2020 technical documentation indicates that the DHP12NWB11S / DHP12CSB11S 12,000 BTU, 115 V pair has a SEER of 16, not 18.

This is a distinction we consider important at AirGreen. The maximum efficiency advertised for an entire series is not always the efficiency of each of its capacities and electrical configurations.

It is also important to avoid directly comparing this SEER with the SEER2 of newer heat pumps. The YORK brochure used for this P Series applies the older SEER, EER, and HSPF metrics. When a property owner compares this unit with a current-generation R-32 or R-454B heat pump, we compare the technical specifications according to their respective evaluation methods rather than simply placing two figures side by side.

Why 115 V can be beneficial in a renovation project

One of the main distinguishing features of the DHP12CSB11S model is its 115 V power supply.

This range is important in a primary bedroom, living room, open-concept apartment, or office whose needs vary significantly depending on the time of day. As the temperature approaches the setpoint, the unit can reduce its capacity rather than operate only in on-off cycles.

In the field, this is precisely what we look for when properly sizing a system: a machine capable of operating for long periods at partial load instead of an oversized unit that reaches the target temperature quickly, shuts off, and then restarts frequently.

An oversized heat pump is not automatically more comfortable. It can lead to shorter cycles, less consistent humidity management, and more noticeable temperature fluctuations.

Heating down to -20°C: useful, but it is important to understand what this means

The 12,000 BTU P Series is specified to operate in heating mode between -20 °C and 24 °C outdoors. Its outdoor cooling range extends from -18 °C to 46 °C. YORK also confirms the use of R-410A for this generation of equipment.

However, operation permitted down to -20 °C does not necessarily mean that the unit delivers its full rated capacity of 13,000 BTU at -20 °C.

The brochure provides a rated capacity and an operating range, but this table does not give the exact heating capacity at -8 °C, -15 °C, and -20 °C for this pair. We therefore avoid making up these values.

For a Greater Montreal homeowner who wants to use a heat pump as the primary heating source, this point is essential. Winter temperatures in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore can fall below -20 °C. A serious analysis must then take into account the existing backup heating system and the home's actual heating load.

Indoor sound level: 29 dB(A) at the lowest setting

Acoustic comfort is particularly important when an indoor unit is installed in a bedroom, office, or small condo.

The air distribution of a wall-mounted heat pump directly affects the feeling of comfort. A unit can reach the right temperature while still creating an uncomfortable area if its airflow blows directly onto a sofa, bed, or desk.

The P Series feature table notably mentions:

Installing a wall-mounted unit simply because a wall is available can produce a mediocre result. Instead, we look for a position that promotes natural airflow throughout the room while avoiding blowing directly on the occupants.

The P Series comes with a DRCPX wireless remote control. Wi-Fi is not built in directly: the documentation indicates that a CS532AH adapter is required.

The mobile app can then allow certain settings to be changed from a phone or tablet. YORK documentation also mentions the EWPE Smart app for the P and X Series when the necessary adapter is installed.

For a cottage, a dwelling used occasionally, or a room whose temperature must be adjusted before the occupants arrive, this option can be practical. For a homeowner who never uses remote controls, keeping the standard remote is just as reasonable.

In a relatively simple installation, we always try to keep the refrigerant route as direct as possible. Each additional detour affects the amount of piping, drainage, the appearance of the line-hide covers, and sometimes the project cost.

Drainage deserves just as much attention as the refrigerant lines

Not all wall-mounted heat pump problems originate in the refrigeration circuit. An improper drain slope can cause water accumulation, overflow, or recurring maintenance issues.

Before installation, we therefore determine:

  1. the exact position of the indoor unit;
  2. the piping route;
  3. the condensate drain outlet;
  4. the available slope;
  5. the outdoor unit’s position;
  6. the required electrical supply.

When gravity drainage is not possible, a condensate pump may be necessary. However, we prefer natural drainage whenever the building configuration allows it, since this reduces the number of mechanical components requiring maintenance.

For this type of project, a 12,000 BTU 115 V heat pump may be a good option if the calculated heat load actually matches this capacity.

insulation and sun exposure, the room’s area and volume, the number of windows, airflow to adjacent rooms, existing heating, electrical panel capacity, and the outdoor unit’s location.

This approach avoids a common mistake: automatically choosing 12,000 BTU solely because the area seems to match a chart found online.

When we would instead direct the customer toward another heat pump

The YORK P Series 12,000 BTU 115 V is not intended for every project.

We would consider a different solution when a customer is primarily looking for:

an ENERGY STAR Cold Climate-certified heat pump, documented performance at -25 °C or -30 °C, eligibility for a current subsidy based on a list of qualified equipment, a next-generation refrigerant, or significantly higher seasonal efficiency.

The AirGreen product sheet for this model currently indicates ENERGY STAR: No, ENERGY STAR Cold Climate: No, and no provincial LogisVert subsidy associated with the product.

This YORK should therefore be considered for what it is: a 115 V Inverter wall-mounted heat pump from an earlier generation, offering an interesting solution for certain targeted projects, but it should not be presented as equivalent to a latest-generation ultra-low-temperature heat pump.

This transparency helps a homeowner make a good decision far more than a comparison based solely on price or the number of BTUs.

Warranty: check the registration terms

Our AirGreen product sheet lists a warranty of 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts, and no manufacturer labor warranty indicated in this format.

The 2020 YORK brochure does, however, provide an important clarification: it presented a standard warranty of 7 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts, extended to 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on parts after online registration for eligible residential installations. Labor coverage was presented separately as a paid option.

For this reason, we always recommend confirming the terms applicable to the serial number of the product actually sold and completing the required registration after installation. The conditions in a brochure published several years ago should not automatically be assumed to be identical to those of the product sold today.

Three errors we seek to avoid with this type of installation

The first is to consider the 115 V as permission to connect the heat pump to any existing circuit. With an MCA of 20 A and an MOCP of 30 A, the electrical design must be done correctly.

The second is installing the indoor unit without considering the airflow direction. Even with vertical and horizontal swing, a head aimed directly at a bed or work table can become uncomfortable.

The third is choosing capacity based solely on floor area. A proper wall-mounted heat pump installation considers the building as a whole: insulation, windows, orientation, ceiling height, open rooms, and winter heating needs.
