A 24,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump that deserves to be assessed beyond the number on the label

When a homeowner is looking for a 24,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or South Shore, the stated capacity is often the first criterion considered. However, to determine whether a unit is truly suitable for a large open-concept area, an entire floor, a commercial space or a difficult-to-cool dwelling, we need to look much further: capacity modulation, airflow, sound level, minimum heating temperature, piping, electrical supply and the location of both units.

The YORK P Series, in the configuration of interest here, pairs the DHP24NWB21S indoor unit with the DHP24CSB21S outdoor unit. YORK officially classifies this combination in its 24K BTU/h, 208/230 V family, among the P Series single-zone wall-mounted heat pump systems.

This is an Inverter-technology heat pump using R-410A, designed to provide cooling and heating down to an advertised outdoor temperature of -20 °C. It is therefore not simply a wall-mounted air conditioner with a heating function added: it is a reversible system capable of modulating its operation according to the building’s actual load.

YORK P Series 24K: model numbers to verify before any installation

For this heat pump, the correct combination is:

This distinction between the indoor and outdoor units is important. On a wall-mounted heat pump replacement project, we never validate an installation solely based on the YORK logo or the appearance of the wall-mounted unit. Both model numbers must be confirmed, particularly when an existing appliance is being partially reused or when verifying an older installation.

“18 SEER” does not mean that every P Series capacity achieves exactly 18 SEER

Here is a particularly important nuance for this product listing.

YORK presents this range as the P Series up to 18 SEER. However, in the official technical table of the 2020 catalog, the DHP24NWB21S / DHP24CSB21S combination is listed with:

  • SEER: 16
  • EER: 9.75
  • HSPF: 9
  • Rated cooling capacity: 22,000 BTU/h
  • nominal heating capacity: 23,000 BTU/h

The table also indicates a cooling modulation range of 8,630 to 23,200 BTU/h, and a heating range of 8,650 to 26,000 BTU/h.

That is why we always distinguish between a 24,000 BTU commercial category and the nominal capacity measured under standardized conditions. A unit sold as “24K” is not necessarily rated at exactly 24,000 BTU/h under all certification conditions.

It is also important to avoid mixing different generations of standards. This 2020 YORK catalogue provides SEER, EER and HSPF ratings, not the newer SEER2, EER2 and HSPF2 ratings. These values should not be automatically converted or renamed. To compare this YORK with a recent heat pump using a SEER2 rating, we therefore recommend comparing the technical specifications according to the same standard rather than placing the figures side by side without context.

Useful modulation in large spaces

Variable capacity is one of the practical advantages of Inverter technology.

In cooling mode, the YORK can go down to around 8,630 BTU/h instead of constantly operating at full capacity. In heating mode, it can modulate from approximately 8,650 to 26,000 BTU/h under the conditions specified in YORK’s documentation.

For a homeowner, this may mean longer, more consistent cycles, particularly when the outdoor temperature is moderate and the building does not require the unit’s full capacity.

On our ductless mini-split heat pump projects in Greater Montreal, this is precisely the behavior we look for when the unit serves an open-concept area: a dining room connected to the living room, an open kitchen, a large basement, or a business where the heat load changes throughout the day.

However, achieving the right result depends on proper sizing. Automatically installing a 24,000 BTU unit simply because the room “seems large” is a mistake. The floor area, insulation, windows, solar exposure, ceiling height, and airflow between rooms must all be considered.

Heating down to -20 °C: what this figure really means

YORK gives the DHP24CSB21S a heating operating range of -4 °F to 75 °F, or approximately -20 °C to 24 °C. In cooling mode, its published range is -18 °C to 46 °C.

The -20 °C must be interpreted correctly.

This represents a published operating limit, not a promise that the unit will always produce exactly its rated capacity of 23,000 BTU/h at -20 °C. As with any heat pump, capacity and efficiency vary with the outdoor temperature.

In the climate of Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Boucherville, and Montérégie, this distinction is particularly important. For a home that relies primarily on the heat pump during the winter, we always check the building's heating load and the presence of an appropriate backup heating system.

High airflow to distribute the available capacity

The indoor unit DHP24NWB21S has four published airflow rates:

706 / 647 / 588 / 530 CFM.

Its corresponding sound pressure levels are listed as:

48 / 44 / 40 / 36 dB(A).

Its dimensions are 42 × 13 × 10 in, or approximately 1,078 × 325 × 246 mm.

The maximum airflow of 706 CFM is particularly relevant for a heat pump of this capacity. A 24K unit installed in an overly enclosed area may have plenty of available capacity without being able to distribute it effectively.

This is a situation we avoid when preparing our estimates: installing a large heat pump in a narrow corridor in the hope of heating four bedrooms whose doors remain closed rarely produces the expected result.

The indoor unit's position matters almost as much as the number of BTUs.

Automatic vertical and horizontal louvers: yes, the P Series has them

YORK documentation is particularly interesting on this point. The P Series function table confirms:

  • automatic 3D vertical and horizontal swing;
  • up/down movement;
  • left/right movement;
  • fixed-angle louver positions.

 

In other words, for this series, the vertical and horizontal louvers can be controlled automatically.

This detail is much more important than it may seem for a high-capacity unit. In an open area, we can direct the airflow toward a distant zone rather than concentrating all the air conditioning directly beneath the unit.

However, poor placement can negate this advantage. Installing the wall-mounted unit behind a large cabinet, too close to a beam, or facing a wall only a few meters away inevitably limits the air-throw range.

Wi-Fi available, but via adapter

The P Series does not include Wi-Fi in the same way as some newer heat pumps. YORK lists the EWPE Smart app, available for the P, X, and Z Series, but specifies that a CS532AH adapter is required for the P and X Series.

We therefore accurately describe this feature as optional Wi-Fi, not built-in Wi-Fi as standard.

The wireless DRCPX remote control is supplied as the standard controller with the P Series.

Installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore: the details that determine the result

A YORK DHP24CSB21S heat pump is relatively easy to understand on paper. On an actual job site, the quality of the result depends on dozens of details that do not appear in the product title.

At AirGreen, we assess, among other things, the indoor unit's location, the length of the refrigerant run, the height difference between the units, condensate drainage, the electrical supply, potential vibration from the outdoor unit, and future access for maintenance.

Piping: 1/4 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas

For the 24K system, YORK specifies:

  • Liquid line: 1/4 po
  • Gas line: 5/8 po
  • Drain: 5/8 po
  • Maximum total piping length: 82 ft / 25 m
  • Published maximum height difference: 33 ft / 10 m

 

This is something to check carefully during a replacement.

We regularly encounter properties where an old heat pump already has refrigerant lines installed in the walls. The fact that these lines are physically present does not guarantee that they are suitable for the new system. The diameter, condition, cleanliness, and compatibility must be verified before deciding to keep them.

For the DHP24CSB21S, the 1/4 – 5/8 in. combination must therefore be taken seriously.

A 208/230 V power supply and suitable electrical protection

The YORK 24K heat pump combination is powered by 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz. For the DHP24 heat pump model, the manufacturer specifies an MCA of 16 A and an MOCP of 25 A.

In practice, this data is used to correctly determine the circuit and electrical protection according to the manufacturer's requirements and applicable standards.

We never recommend simply choosing a circuit breaker based on estimated average consumption. The MCA and maximum overcurrent protection are among the data that must be verified before work begins.

Outdoor dimensions and clearances

The DHP24CSB21S outdoor module measures approximately:

38 × 28 × 16 in
or 955 × 700 × 396 mm.

Its published outdoor sound level is 59 dB(A).

For an installation on the South Shore, in Montreal, or in the denser areas of Laval and Longueuil, we must consider not only the physical space occupied by the unit, but also:

  • access for servicing;
  • the clearances required around the heat exchanger;
  • snow;
  • water discharge from defrosting;
  • proximity to windows;
  • vibrations transmitted to the structure;
  • municipal requirements applicable to the location of a heat pump.

A properly selected but poorly positioned unit can become unnecessarily noisy or difficult to maintain.

Mistakes we seek to avoid with a 24,000 BTU heat pump

A durable installation involves more than mounting two units and connecting them with a pair of pipes.

Among the issues we systematically seek to eliminate in our HVAC installations in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore are:

  • an indoor unit that is much too large for the room;
  • an airflow directed straight at a bed, sofa, or work table;
  • an insufficient drain slope;
  • existing piping with the wrong diameter;
  • an outdoor support that amplifies vibrations;
  • an outdoor unit positioned too close to an obstruction;
  • a power supply selected without consulting the MCA and MOCP;
  • a much longer refrigerant line set than expected;
  • a poor understanding of the available capacity in extremely cold weather.

A 24,000 BTU unit is particularly sensitive to its location because of its high airflow. In a large open-concept area, this is an advantage. In a small enclosed room, however, it can create discomfort.

Maintaining a YORK P Series: preserving airflow before the problem becomes noticeable

The airflow from a wall-mounted unit depends directly on the cleanliness of the filters, evaporator, and blower wheel.

A unit capable of moving up to 706 CFM will not deliver the same results if the blower wheel is covered in dust or if the heat exchanger is clogged. The homeowner may sometimes feel that “the heat pump no longer cools like it used to,” when the problem is primarily related to airflow.

We therefore recommend periodically inspecting the filters and carrying out a thorough cleaning of the wall-mounted heat pump when internal buildup warrants it. This is particularly relevant in homes with pets, open kitchens, dusty environments, and installations that operate almost continuously.

Warranty: clearly distinguish the YORK warranty from labour coverage

The YORK catalog indicates a standard warranty of 7 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts, with the option to extend it to 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on parts after eligible registration. The document also mentions a 10-year labour protection option subject to additional conditions.

The AirGreen product sheet, for its part, shows 10-10-0 years of coverage and indicates that an additional warranty may be available.

To avoid any confusion, the warranty applicable to a given installation should always be confirmed at the time of purchase, particularly for a model from an older product generation.

Is this YORK eligible for a LogisVert rebate?

The AirGreen specification sheet provided for this model states:

and no provincial rebate amount is currently listed.

We therefore do not recommend choosing this heat pump on the assumption that financial assistance will automatically be available. When a heat pump rebate in Quebec is part of a project's financial calculation, we verify the specific model's eligibility before signing.

This is particularly important when a homeowner compares this YORK with a newer cold-climate heat pump whose initial price is higher but which may qualify for a different incentive program.

Who is this YORK 24K wall-mounted heat pump suitable for?

This configuration may be suitable for a homeowner seeking a high-capacity single-zone wall-mounted heat pump, particularly for:

  • a large open area;
  • an open-concept floor;
  • a large basement;
  • a commercial space;
  • a room with a significant cooling load;
  • a replacement where the existing mechanical and electrical specifications match the system.

It is less attractive if the project primarily requires ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification, documented performance at very low temperatures below -20°C, or newer refrigerant technology.

The choice must therefore be based on the complete project, not solely on the YORK name, the 18 SEER rating, or the 24,000 BTU capacity.

Why an on-site estimate remains important for a 24K heat pump

Two homes with exactly the same floor area may require two different HVAC solutions.

In Montréal, a century-old home with poorly insulated walls and large windows does not have the same thermal profile as a recently built condo of comparable size in Boucherville. In Laval, a bungalow with an open basement does not distribute air in the same way as a multistory cottage. In Longueuil, the available location for the outdoor unit can also completely change the piping route.

The YORK P Series 18 SEER | 24000 BTU Wall-Mounted Heat Pump is a good example of the importance of reading technical data in detail.

It is indeed a unit from the 24K P Series family, but the YORK table gives this specific combination a rated cooling capacity of 22,000 BTU/h, a heating capacity of 23,000 BTU/h, a SEER of 16, an HSPF of 9, heating operation down to -20 °C, airflow of up to 706 CFM, 1/4–5/8 in. piping, and a 208/230 V power supply.

It also offers a real distribution advantage with automatic vertical and horizontal swing, while Wi-Fi control remains available with the appropriate adapter.

These are the details that determine whether it is truly suitable for a property, rather than relying on three figures in a title.
